That all led to yet another jammed pack month of releases that continue to show there is so much quality and variety in the industry to enjoy. With that in mind, find out what made my list of the ten best comic book releases for the month of November.

ALIENS VS AVENGERS #2

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jonathan Hickman; Artist: Esad Ribic; Colorist: Ive Svorcina; Letterer: Cory Petit

With how often we’ve seen the Avengers take on larger than life threats it is amazing how Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic are able invoke genuine fear from the Xenomorphs presence. There is so much genuine tension as your left wondering if Earth can survive the threats of the Xenomorphs. The way the Avengers try to handle things speaks to the survivor instinct approach they are forced to take. Major decisions made by the likes of Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, and Steve Rogers add to he fear of the threat they are facing. The place where we are left by the end of Aliens vs. Avengers #2 the decisions made send all the characters into an unknown spot. That is a refreshing place to be by with a comic book.

G.I. JOE #1

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Joshua Williamson; Artist: Tom Reilly; Colorist: Jordie Bellaire; Letterer: Rus Wooton

G.I. JOE #1 nails what it means for this iconic team to make their debut at this point in the Energon Universe. Even though the team was built out in prelude mini-series the dynamic is all new to he members of the Energon Universe’s G.I. JOE. How that impacts the way they must deal with Cobra and other threats that have already been operating gets over the importance of this series. The G.I. JOE are a needed team and the fact they don’t have time t worry about getting their team dynamic 100% adds a sense of tension to the story. It is a tension that made the hook ending even stronger as we’re left wondering if they can accomplish the missions they are given.

GREEN LANTERN #17

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jeremy Adams; Artist: Xermanico; Colorist: Romulo Fajardo Jr.; Letterer: Dave Sharpe

As soon as you open Green Lantern #17 there is a feeling that the fate of the DC Universe hangs in the balance. It is a feeling that permeates through the entire issue. Every single character involved in this Green Lantern vs United Planets has something important to do. That includes the outside forces such as Red Lantern Sinestro. It makes the decisions that Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and others must make important because there was no time to waste when making those decisions. Having such a big event feel in an ongoing event elevates the action to another level that very few comic books can reach.

I HEART SKULL CRUSHER! #7

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Josie Campbell; Artist: Alessio Zonno; Colorist: Angel De Santiago; Letterer: Jim Campbell

I Heart Skull Crusher! #7 nails balancing all the crazy different things that can be done with manga and webtoons style story telling. There are plenty of moments that force Trini to continue to grow up but at the same time her core character is still there. This adds a few light hearted moments to make the more intense moments when things take a turn hit harder. That leads to a big game changing moment that is framed in a way that is reminiscent of mid-season finales for a TV show. It was the best way to set up an exciting 2025 for this series.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #1

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Mark Waid; Artist: Dan Mora; Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain; Letterer: Ariana Maher

There is zero wasted time making Justice League Unlimited appear as the biggest series that every DC Comics fan needs to read. Every panel and page had a purpose. That purpose was showing how the united heroes under the Justice League banner are operating. Even as there was a main mission focus there were various looks at what other squads are up to that get over how this version of the Justice League is operating with the bigger picture in mind. This is by far the best use of a fallout from a big event to make what happened in Absolute Power truly consequential. That consequence being the DCU heroes being better made Justice League Unlimited #1 a must-read superhero comic book.

PHOENIX #5

Best Comic Books November 2024: Phoenix #5
Credit: Marvel Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Stephanie Phillips; Artists: Alessadro Miracolo and Marc Renna; Colorist: David Curiel; Letterer: Cory Petit

Phoenix #5 does such a wonderful job driving home Jean Grey as a cosmic hero that others in power view as a massive threat. It is a credit to the storytelling in this series that through it all Jean Grey’s humanity is not lost. Even when given the chance to ascend Jean as a person knows she does not need to take the offer given to her by Eternity. How she goes about showing she stands on her own level as Phoenix is incredible payoff to her character. That payoff leads to big decisions that are made that could have sever ramifications for the Marvel Universe in 2025 and beyond. Fans will certainly be excited about who Phoenix is set up to face off to end the year and going into the new year.

POWER RANGERS PRIME #1

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Melissa Flores; Artist: Michael Yg; Colorist: Fabi Marques; Letterer: Ed Dukeshire

There is genuine excitement Power Rangers Prime #1 invokes as we experience a whole new universe with familiar characters in place. Because of the changes made by the Eltarians, the Power Ranger history was altered in unique ways that makes the sense of discovery fun to experience. Choosing Lauren Shiba from Power Rangers Samurai as the lead creates some cool new ways to tackle other characters connected to the Morphin Grid. That includes the surprise inclusion of the VR Troopers that add to the questions about what is going on to this universe. It all comes together for a must-read experience for Power Rangers’ fans.

THE ROCKETFELLERS #1

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Peter J. Tomasi; Artist: Francis Manapul; Letterer: Rob Leigh

Peter Tomasi and Francis Manapul nail getting the reader feel like they are on a grand adventure with the main cast of The Rocketfellers #1. Most importantly, the family dynamic is instantly put over with how each character acts throughout this issue. They are all looking out for each other in a way only a family can. That adds so much to the threat that is hunting down the Rocketfellers in their cosmic time-traveling adventure. Manipul’s artwork is absolutely stunning that does so much to get over the grand adventure this comic book puts the reader on.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #4

Credit: IDW Publishing

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jason Aaron; Artist: Chris Burnham; Colorist: Brian Reber; Letterer: Shawn Lee

For a franchise known to deliver dark and gritty stories Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4 will be up there with any of those stories. It is crazy to say that for a one-shot style story led by Donatello but that is what Jason Aaron and Chris Burnham deliver. They deliver that with an incredible blend of storytelling that gets across how bad of state Donatello is in after everything he has been through the last few years. The mental and physical toll on his mind and body are clear, leading to a greater sense of danger for Donny. By the time it is all over there you’re left with more questions about Donatello’s future than any of the other three brothers combined.

THE ULTIMATES #6

Best Comic Books November 2024: The Ultimates #6
Credit: Marvel Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Deniz Camp; Artist: Juan Frigeri; Colorist: Federico Blee; Letterer: Travis Lanham

The Ultimates #6 is the harsh learning experience that a new team wasn’t expecting to have but did. Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeriidentified the inexperience of the Ultimate Universe’s Avengers team as something that would come back to bite them against more experienced opponents. That in turn put over how dangerous Ultimate Hulk and his elite squad known as The Immortal Weapons of Hulk are as an unstoppable force. It was a great use of creative self-awareness from Camp and Friegeri’s part to have such a harsh result occur for the team. This in turn creates an even more importance in how the Ultimates must find ways to combat The Maker’s Council that doesn’t cause them to look like such rookies.
