August 2024 Comic Book Sales Rankings

The Battle for the Top 10

Marvel Comics placed seven comics in the Top 10. Month-over-month sales were down from the eight comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 10 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were down as Marvel Comics had eight comics in the Top 10 in August 2023. Numbers were flat from two years ago as Marvel Comics had seven comics in the Top 10 in August 2022. Numbers were up from three years ago as Marvel Comics had six comics in the Top 10 in August 2021.

Year-over-year numbers increased as DC Comics had one comic in the Top 10 in August 2023. However, numbers were down from two years ago as DC Comics had three comics in the Top 10 in August 2022. Numbers were also down from three years ago as DC Comics had three comics in the Top 10 in August 2021.

DC Comics’ two titles came from the Batman franchise and Absolute Power.

Image Comics placed one comic in the Top 10. Month-over-month sales were flat compared to the one comic that Image Comics had in the Top 10 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had zero comics in the Top 10 in August 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Image Comics had zero comics in the Top 10 in August 2022. Numbers were flat from three years ago as Image Comics had one comic in the Top 10 in August 2021.

As usual, Image Comics’ lone Top 10 title was from the Hasbro franchise.

The Battle for the Top 25

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 11-25 range typically sell in the 65,000 to 50,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed nineteen comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were up from the seventeen comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 25 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics had eighteen comics in the Top 25 in August 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Marvel Comics had eighteen comics in the Top 25 in August 2022. Numbers were also up from three years ago as Marvel Comics had fourteen comics in the Top 25 in August 2021.

Marvel Comics’ Top 25 success was powered by the Spider-Man franchise, X-Men franchise, Avengers franchise, and Werewolf by Night.

DC Comics placed four comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were down from the five comics that DC Comics had in the Top 25 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were flat as DC Comics had four comics in the Top 25 in August 2023. Numbers were down from two years ago as DC Comics had seven comics in the Top 25 in August 2022. Numbers were down from three years ago as DC Comics had seven comics in the Top 25 in August 2021.

Two of DC Comics’ four titles in the Top 25 were from the Batman franchise.

Image Comics placed two comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were flat compared to the two comics that Image Comics had in the Top 25 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had one comic in the Top 25 in August 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Image Comics had zero comics in the Top 25 in August 2022. However, numbers were down from three years ago as Image Comics had three comics in the Top 25 in August 2021.

As expected both of Image Comics’ Top 25 titles were from the Hasbro franchise.

The Battle for the Top 50

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 26-50 range typically sell in the 49,000 to 30,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed thirty-five comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were up from the twenty-six comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 50 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics had thirty-four comics in the Top 50 in August 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Marvel Comics had thirty-two comics in the Top 50 in August 2022. Numbers were also up from three years ago as Marvel Comics had twenty-three comics in the Top 50 in August 2021.

Things look positive from Marvel Comics in the Top 50 compared to last month, a year ago, two years ago, and three years ago. Not too much for Marvel Comics to complain about here.

Daredevil #12 fell from the number 22 spot to the number 31 spot. Saladin Ahmed continues to struggle to keep this title in the Top 25. Daredevil is not the same consistently strong seller it has been over the past three years. But, remaining a Top 50 title every month is nothing to be ashamed of.

Vengeance of the Moon Knight #8 climbed from the number 47 spot to the number 44 spot. This title continues to hang out in the 40s over the past several months.

DC Comics placed nine comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were down from the thirteen comics that DC Comics had in the Top 50 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had thirteen comics in the Top 50 in August 2023. Numbers were also down from two years ago as DC Comics had fifteen comics in the Top 50 in August 2022. Numbers were also down from three years ago as DC Comics had twenty-one comics in the Top 50 in August 2021.

Everything looks awful for DC Comics in the Top 50. DC Comics is down compared to last month, a year ago, two years ago, and three years ago. I am unsure where DC Comics goes at this point. A full house cleaning of their executives and editorial staff is in order given the systemic failure of this publisher.

Five of DC Comics’ nine Top 50 titles came from the Batman franchise.

Image Comics placed four comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were down from the five comics that Image Comics had in the Top 50 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had one comic in the Top 50 in August 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Image Comics had three comics in the Top 50 in August 2022. Numbers were flat from three years ago as Image Comics had four comics in the Top 50 in August 2021.

Three of Image Comics’ four Top 50 titles came from the Hasbro franchise. One of the Top 50 Image Comics titles came from the Universal Monsters franchise. Once again, these two valuable licenses save Image Comics from being shut out of the Top 50.

Oni Press placed one comic in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were up from the zero comics that Oni Press had in the Top 50 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Oni Press had zero comics in the Top 50 in August 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Oni Press had zero comics in the Top 50 in August 2022. Numbers were up from three years ago as Oni Press had zero comics in the Top 50 in August 2021.

EC Cruel Universe #1 had a solid debut taking the number 34 spot. These EC titles have been a huge boon to Oni Press which is normally irrelevant in the battle for the Top 200.

IDW Publishing placed one comic in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were down from the two comics that IDW Publishing had in the Top 50 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were flat as IDW Publishing had one comic in the Top 50 in August 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as IDW Publishing had zero comics in the Top 50 in August 2022. Numbers were up from three years ago as IDW Publishing had zero comics in the Top 50 in August 2021.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 took the number 48 spot. It is impressive that a resolicited title managed to make the Top 50.

The Battle for the Top 75

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 51-75 range typically sell in the 29,000 to 25,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed forty-six comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were up from the forty comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 75 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics had forty-four comics in the Top 75 in August 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Marvel Comics had forty-three comics in the Top 75 in August 2022. All in all, things are looking good for Marvel Comics in the Top 75.

Doctor Strange #18 shot up from the number 108 spot to the number 70 spot. This is lower than we normally see in this title. It is a nice rebound from the last issue, but Doctor Strange #16 snagged the number 43 spot. So, this title is quite off the pace.

DC Comics placed seventeen comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were down from the eighteen comics that DC Comics had in the Top 75 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had twenty-four comics in the Top 75 in August 2023. Numbers were also down from two years ago as DC Comics had twenty-four comics in the Top 75 in August 2022.

Everything continues to look awful for DC Comics. It is alarming how poorly DC Comics is performing compared to a year and two years ago. Especially considering how we all thought DC Comics was circling the drain a year ago and two years ago. Somehow, DC Comics manages to find new lows.

Image Comics placed eight comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were down from the ten comics that Image Comics had in the Top 75 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had four comics in the Top 75 in August 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Image Comics had six comics in the Top 75 in August 2022.

Seven of Image Comics’ eight comics in the Top 75 were from the Hasbro franchise, the Univeral Monsters franchise, and the Ghost Machine franchise. The only Image comic outside of those two valuable franchises and Ghost Machine was Power Fantasy #1. Image Comics would be in a world of trouble without these popular licenses and Geoff Johns’ Ghost Machine.

IDW Publishing placed two comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were flat from the two comics that IDW Publishing had in the Top 75 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as IDW Publishing had one comic in the Top 75 in August 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as IDW Publishing had zero comics in the Top 75 in August 2022.

Dynamite Entertainment placed one comic in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were flat from the one comic that Dynamite Entertainment had in the Top 75 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Dynamite Entertainment had zero comics in the Top 75 in August 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Dynamite Entertainment had zero comics in the Top 75 in August 2022.

Space Ghost #4 shot up from the number 143 spot to the number 56 spot. It is amazing to see Space Ghost still a Top 75 title by the fourth issue. I adore Space Ghost, but I was not bullish on this title performing that well. It appears this old franchise has more sales power in it than I thought. It is great to see!

Oni Press placed one comic in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were up from the zero comics that Oni Press had in the Top 75 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Oni Press had zero comics in the Top 75 in August 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Oni Press had zero comics in the Top 75in August 2022. Numbers were up from three years ago as Oni Press had zero comics in the Top 75 in August 2021.

The Battle for the Top 100

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 76-100 range typically sell in the 24,000 to 18,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed fifty-five comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were up from the fifty-one comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 100 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were down as Marvel Comics had fifty-six comics in the Top 100 in August 2023. Numbers were also down from two years ago as Marvel Comics had fifty-eight comics in the Top 100 in August 2022. Numbers were up from three years ago as Marvel Comics had forty-seven comics in the Top 100 in August 2021.

Marvel Comics is doing better than in 2021, which is to be expected as the comics industry was hurt by the pandemic and took a while to recover. However, it is not ideal that Marvel Comics is doing worse than it did in 2022 and 2023. The silver lining is that at least the drop-off in sales is not that big.

DC Comics placed twenty-four comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were flat from the twenty-four comics that DC Comics had in the Top 100 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had thirty-one comics in the Top 100 in August 2023. Numbers were also down from two years ago as DC Comics had thirty-two comics in the Top 100 in August 2022. Numbers were down from three years ago as DC Comics had forty-one comics in the Top 100 in August 2021.

Everything is a complete disaster for DC Comics right now. DC Comics is down compared to 2023, 2022, and 2021. What is even more alarming is the massive margin that DC Comics’ sales are down in the Top 100. There is nothing good to be found here. DC Comics is in desperate need of a full shakeup in their leadership and editorial. DC Comics editorial has been engaged in publishing malpractice for quite some time now.

Image Comics placed thirteen comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were down from the fourteen comics that Image Comics had in the Top 100 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had six comics in the Top 100 in August 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Image Comics had seven comics in the Top 100 in August 2022. Numbers were also up from three years ago as Image Comics had eight comics in the Top 100 in August 2021.

Ten of Image Comics’ thirteen comics were from the Hasbro franchise, The Universal Monsters franchise, Ghost Machine, and the Spawn franchise. Only three comics came from outside of these franchises. Those three issues came from Power Fantasy and Saga. Image Comics would be irrelevant without these four powerful franchises.

Dynamite Entertainment placed three comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were up from the two comics that Dynamite Entertainment had in the Top 100 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Dynamite Entertainment had one comic in the Top 100 in August 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Dynamite Entertainment had zero comics in the Top 100 in August 2022. Numbers were up from three years ago as Dynamite Entertainment had zero comics in the Top 100 in August 2021.

ThunderCats #7 fell from the number 60 spot to the number 91 spot. It is still impressive that ThunderCats is still hanging in the Top 100 after over half a year into this title’s run.

Jonny Quest #1 debuted at the number 97 spot. This is another old franchise that I love. However, I thought nobody else would care about this beloved 1960s franchise. I did not expect this issue to even crack the Top 200. So, a debut in the Top 100 is damn good! Having said that, I am sure this title will drop pretty quickly in the rankings.

Oni Press placed one comic in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were up from the zero comics that Oni Press had in the Top 75 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as Oni Press had zero comics in the Top 100 in August 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Oni Press had zero comics in the Top 100 in August 2022. Numbers were up from three years ago as Oni Press had zero comics in the Top 100 in August 2021.

EC Epitaphs from the Abyss #2 fell from the number 34 spot to the number 78 spot. This four-issue mini-series will probably not conclude in the Top 100. Having said that, this title is still performing well for Oni Press which is normally irrelevant in the Top 200.

IDW Publishing placed two comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were/flat from the two comics that IDW Publishing had in the Top 100 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were up as IDW Publishing had one comic in the Top 100 in August 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as IDW Publishing had zero comics in the Top 100 in August 2022. Numbers were up from three years ago as IDW Publishing had one comic in the Top 100 in August 2021.

BOOM! Studios placed one comic in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were down from the three comics that BOOM! Studios had in the Top 100 in July 2024.

Year-over-year numbers were down as BOOM! Studios had three comics in the Top 100 in August 2023. Numbers were down from two years ago as BOOM! Studios had two comics in the Top 100 in August 2022. Numbers were down from three years ago as BOOM! Studios had two comics in the Top 100 in August 2021.

Something is Killing the Children #40 came in at the number 76 spot. Boom! Studios continues to struggle to have much success in the Top 100.

The Joshua Williamson Award For The Writer With The Most Titles In The Top 50

Leah Williams had two issues from the same title with Gotham City Sirens #1 at the number 19 spot and Gotham City Sirens #2 at the number 28 spot.

Geoffrey Thorne also had two issues from the same title with X-Force #1 at the number 38 spot and X-Force #2 at the number 50 spot.

Zeb Wells had two issues from the same title with Amazing Spider-Man #55 at the number 12 spot and Amazing Spider-Man #56 at the number 29 spot.

Two writers had two issues from different titles.

Mark Waid had two issues from different titles with Absolute Power #2 at the number 7 spot and Batman Superman World’s Finest #30 at the number 41 spot.

Al Ewing also had two issues from different titles with Venom War #1 at the number 5 spot and Immortal Thor #14 at the number 39 spot.

One writer pulled away from the pack with four issues in the Top 50. Jed MacKay had four issues with X-Men #2 at the number 3 spot, X-Men #3 at the number 15 spot, Avengers #17 at the number 16 spot, and Vengeance of the Moon Knight #8 at the number 44 spot.

However, that was not enough to win the coveted Joshua Williamson Award for August 2024! Like an old Kung Fu master, Jonathan Hickman dispatched all challengers with five issues in the Top 50! Jonathan Hickman’s five issues were Ultimate Spider-Man #8 at the number 2 spot, Wolverine: Revenge #1 at the number 10 spot, Wolverine: Revenge – Red Band #1 at the number 13 spot, Aliens Vs. Avengers #1 at the number 14 spot, and Ultimate Spider-Man #7 at the number 18 spot.

Therefore, the winner of the Joshua Williamson Award for August 2024 is…Jonathan Hickman!

Battle of the Franchises

The X-Men franchise took first place with three comics in the Top 10, seven comics in the Top 25, and twelve comics in the Top 50.

The Spider-Man franchise took second place with three comics in the Top 10, six comics in the Top 25, and eleven comics in the Top 50.

The Avengers franchise took third place with one comic in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50.

The Ultimate Universe took fourth place with two comics in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50.

The Batman franchise took fifth place with one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50.

Unranked: Sesame Street #1 (Oni Press)

Unranked: Huge Detective #1 (Titan Comics)

As usual, we will address most of these debut issues in their respective franchise sections below. However, there are a few we will touch on at this point.

Werewolf by Night Red Band #1 had a solid debut taking the number 17 spot. That is better than I expected.

EC Cruel Universe #1 had a good debut taking the number 34 spot. This is incredibly high in the sales ranking for an Oni Press comic. The EC titles continue to be a blessing for Oni Press.

DC Vs Vampires World War V #1 had an impressive debut taking the number 49 spot. This six-issue mini-series is going to struggle to stay out of the Dead Titles Walking category before it concludes.

Blood Hunters #1 had an awful debut coming in at the number 85 spot. This was predictable since Erica Schultz is the writer and all of her comics for Marvel Comics have bombed in the rankings. This four-issue mini-series is a lock for the Dead Walking Titles category by the second issue.

Power Rangers: Infinity #1 bombed in its debut as it went unranked. This issue looked horrendous so I am not surprised that few readers were interested in this title.

Big Events

Venom War

5 Venom War #1 (Venom War)

43 Venom #36 (Venom War)

45 Venom War: Spider-Man #1 (Venom War)

73 Venom War: Carnage #1 (Venom War)

88 Venom War: Venomous #1 (Venom War)

126 Venom War Zombiotes #1 (Venom War)

Venom War had one comic in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50.

Venom War #1 had an impressive debut taking the number 5 spot. This five-issue mini-series from Al Ewing looks like it is going to be a sales hit. Having said that, while the main title in Venom War was a huge sales success, the tie-in titles all had unimpressive debut numbers.

Absolute Power

4 Batman #151 (Absolute Power)

7 Absolute Power #2 (Of 4)

25 Wonder Woman #12 (Absolute Power)

27 Superman #17 (Absolute Power)

55 Green Lantern #14 (Absolute Power)

62 Absolute Power Task Force VII #4 (Of 7)

107 Absolute Power Task Force VII #5 (Of 7)

129 Green Arrow #15 (Absolute Power)

130 Absolute Power Origins #2 (Of 3)

156 Absolute Power #1 (Of 4)  (Resolicitation)

166 Absolute Power Task Force VII #3 (Of 7)  (Resolicitation)

Absolute Power had two comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50. This was better/worse/flat than July 2024 when Absolute Power had zero comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and six comics in the Top 50.

Absolute Power #2 climbed from the number 15 spot to the number 7 spot. This is what I expected from this four-issue big event. Absolute Power’s debut issue got caught up in an odd shipping schedule for the June 2024 and July 2024 rankings. I would expect Absolute Power to remain a Top 10 seller.

Absolute Power Task Force VII #4 climbed from the number 98 spot to the number 62 spot. Absolute Power Task Force VII #5 then fell to the number 107 spot.

Absolute Power Origins #2 fell from the number 88 spot to the number 130 spot. This three-issue mini-series has been a total sales failure. Everyone outside of a DC editor knew this was going to happen. John Ridley is a Hollywood guy who has never had sales success in mainstream superhero comics. And this title centers on Amanda Waller who is just not as popular as DC Comics thinks she is. Obviously, this mini-series will conclude well into the Dead Titles Walking category.

Hasbro Franchise

8 Transformers #11

22 Scarlett #3 (Of 5)

32 Destro #3 (Of 5)

67 Void Rivals #12

87 Transformers #1 40th Anniversary Edition (One-Shot)

98 GI Joe A Real American Hero #309

176 Void Rivals #11  (Resolicitation)

187 Transformers #10  (Resolicitation)

The Hasbro franchise had one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50. This was the same as in July 2024 when the Hasbro franchise had one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50.

Transformers #11 dipped from the number 5 spot to the number 8 spot. This title continues to be a sales beast.

Scarlett #3 took the number 22 spot. It looks like this five-issue mini-series won’t finish in the Top 25. But, a Top 50 finish is still possible. That would be a big disappointment as Cobra Commander concluded its five-issue limited series at the number 18 spot and Duke concluded its five-issue limited series at the number 26 spot.

Destro #3 fell from the number 16 spot to the number 32 spot. This five-issue limited series is going to conclude outside of the Top 25, too. But, a Top 50 finish is still possible. Again, this is not nearly as good as what Joshua Williamson did with Cobra Commander and Duke.

Void Rivals #12 dropped from the number 31 spot to the number 67 spot. This was a big drop and the first time Void Rivals has been outside of the Top 50 since April 2024 with Void Rivals #8.

GI Joe A Real American Hero #309 fell from the number 70 spot to the number 98 spot. This is the lowest that this title has sold since Image Comics took over the Hasbro license. We shall see if GI Joe A Real American Hero can rebound and avoid slipping into the Dead Titles Walking category.

Spawn Franchise

89 Gunslinger Spawn #34

121 Spawn Scorched #32

144 Spawn Rat City #5

151 Spawn #355  (Resolicitation)

161 King Spawn #37

183 Spawn Misery #3 (Of 4)

195 Spawn Kills Every Spawn #2 (Of 5)

The Spawn franchise had zero comics in the Top 50. This was the same as in July 2024 when the Spawn franchise had zero comics in the Top 50.

Gunslinger Spawn #34 came in at the number 89 spot. This is about where we expect to see this title in the rankings.

Spawn Scorched #32 climbed from the number 136 spot to the number 121 spot. This title cannot seem to get itself back into the Top 100.

Spawn Rat City #5 dropped from the number 112 spot to the number 144 spot. Erica Schultz has failed to get many people interested in this new title. I do not see this improving.

King Spawn #37 dropped from the number 120 spot to the number 161 spot. This title continues to wildly fluctuate up and down the Dead Titles Walking category.

Spawn Misery #3 ticked up from the number 190 spot to the number 183 spot. This four-issue mini-series is lucky that it did not drop out of the Top 200 and go unranked. This mini-series has been a total sales bust.

Ghost Machine Titles

53 Geiger #5

75 Redcoat #5

Ghost Machine had zero comics in the Top 50. This was worse than July 2024 when Ghost Machine had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50.

Geiger #5 dipped from the number 46 spot to the number 53 spot.

Redcoat #5 dropped from the number 62 spot to the number 75 spot.

Star Wars Franchise

64 Star Wars: Darth Vader #49

90 Star Wars #49

115 Star Wars: Inquisitors #2

128 Star Wars: The High Republic (Phase III) #10

134 Star Wars: Ahsoka #2

160 Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red #4  (Resolicitation)

170 Star Wars: Ahsoka #1  (Resolicitation)

200 Star Wars Darth Vader #48  (Resolicitation)

The Star Wars franchise had zero comics in the Top 50. This was down from July 2024 when the Star Wars franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as the Star Wars franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50 in August 2023.

Numbers were also down from two years ago as the Star Wars franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50 in August 2022.

Star Wars is a shell of what it once was as Marvel Comics has driven this franchise into the ground over the past several years.

Star Wars: Darth Vader #49 climbed from the number 81 spot to the number 64 spot. This title may not be able to conclude in the Top 50 next month.

Star Wars #49 fell from the number 66 spot to the number 90 spot. This title will struggle to conclude in the Top 75 next month.

Star Wars: Inquisitors #2 climbed from the number 135 spot to the number 115 spot. This Rodney Barnes comic is another sales bust for the Star Wars franchise.

Star Wars: The High Republic (Phase III) #10 took the number 128 spot which is about where this dud of a title normally is found in the rankings.

Star Wars: Ahsoka #2 crashed and burned in spectacular fashion falling from the number 11 spot down to the number 134 spot. Wow. Readers were not impressed with what Rodney Barnes delivered in the debut issue. Chalk this title up as yet another sales failure for Barnes.

Unranked: Spidey and His Amazing Friends #1

The Spider-Man franchise had three comics in the Top 10, six comics in the Top 25, and eleven comics in the Top 50. This was better than July 2024 when the Spider-Man franchise had two comics in the Top 10, four comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were up as the Spider-Man franchise had three comics in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and eight comics in the Top 50 in August 2023.

Numbers were also up from two years ago as the Spider-Man franchise had three comics in the Top 10, six comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50 in August 2022.

Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood #1 had a strong debut taking the number 9 spot. We shall see if this four-issue mini-series can continue to get strong sales until the end.

Amazing Spider-Man #55 took the number 12 spot and Amazing Spider-Man #56 took the number 29 spot. This was down from July 2024 when Amazing Spider-Man #53 took the number 4 spot and Amazing Spider-Man #54 took the number 19 spot. Some cracks are beginning to show, but Amazing Spider-Man is still a strong seller.

Spectacular Spider-Men #6 climbed from the number 45 spot to the number 26 spot. What an impressive rebound as this is the second consecutive month this title has climbed up in the rankings.

Spider-Man Reign 2 #2 fell from the number 39 spot to the number 46 spot. It looks like this four-issue mini-series will fall out of the Top 50 next month.

Spidey and His Amazing Friends #1 has a horrible debut failing to even make the Top 200 and ended up unranked.

Let’s check out the knock-off Spider-Men.

Spider-Society #1 had a nice debut taking the number 20 spot. We shall see if this four-issue mini-series can conclude in the Top 50.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #23 climbed from the number 101 spot to the number 66 spot. This title is far off the pace from the number 33 ranking Miles Morales: Spider-Man #21 scored in July 2024. This title continues to experience erratic sales rankings.

Miles Morales Spider-Man Annual #1 delivered a terrible debut at the number 103 spot.

Spider-Boy #10 fell from the number 65 spot to the number 100 spot. This ended two straight months of sales gains in the rankings.

Chasm: Curse of Kaine #1 had an awful debut coming in at the 133 spot. This four-issue mini-series from Steve Foxe is a Dead Title Walking straight out of the gate.

Let’s hop over to the Venom-related titles.

Venom #36 climbed from the 134 spot to the number 43 spot. This is still off the pace of the number 30 ranking that Venom #34 had in June 2024.

Venom War: Spider-Man #1 had an unimpressive debut barely making the Top 50 by taking the number 45 spot. What a massive disappointment this must be for Marvel Comics. Not even the power of Peter Parker, the Spider-Man brand, and being a tie-in issue to a popular big event story can carry Jackson Lanzig and Collin Kelly to sales success. Incredible.

Venom War: Carnage #1 had a bad debut coming in at the number 73 spot. It looks like this three-issue mini-series from Torunn Grønbekk is going to struggle to avoid becoming a Dead Title Walking.

Venom War: Venomous #1 had an awful debit coming in at the number 88 spot. This was no surprise. Nobody was asking for Black Widow in a Venom costume. And Erica Schultz is the writer and she has never had any sales success.

Venom War Zombiotes #1 had a hideous debut coming in at the number 126 spot and being a Dead Title Walking right from the start. No surprise here, either. Cavan Scott never has any sales success.

Venomverse Reborn #3 fell from the number 104 spot to the number 141 spot. This four-issue mini-series will conclude as a Dead Title Walking. Anthology comics continue to fail in the sales rankings.

Venom Separation Anxiety #4 fell from the number 113 spot to the number 154 spot. This five-issue mini-series may just barely avoid concluding unranked.

Let’s wrap up with the ladies of the Spider-Man franchise.

Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #4 death spiraled from the number 57 spot to the number 104 spot. Keep in mind that Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #1 debuted at the number 10 spot! What a dramatic fall in just three months.

I predicted that Stephanie Phillips would drive this title into the Dead Titles Walking category by issue #6 or #7. Phillips exceeded my expectations by making this a Dead Title Walking with just the fourth issue. Phillips continues to have no success in the sales rankings. Are we at the point where we should expect to see Marvel Comics announce they are canceling this title with the twelfth issue?

Spider-Woman #10 fell from the number 131 spot to the number 167 spot. This is another sales dud from Steve Foxe. Amazingly, Marvel Comics has not announced that this title is being canceled.

X-Men Franchise

11 X-Factor #1

13 Wolverine: Revenge – Red Band #1

137 Uncanny X-Men #266 Facsimile Edition

147 Hellverine #3  (Resolicitation)

173 Ultimate X-Men #5  (Resolicitation)

The X-Men franchise had three comics in the Top 10, seven comics in the Top 25, and twelve comics in the Top 50. This was better than July 2024 when the X-Men franchise had five comics in the Top 10, six comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were up as the X-Men franchise had four comics in the Top 10, four comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50 in August 2023.

Numbers were also up from two years ago as the X-Men franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and six comics in the Top 50 in August 2022.

Uncanny X-Men #1 destroyed all competitors and snagged the number 1 spot. This is no surprise. There is no brand outside of “Batman” and “Amazing Spider-Man” that is anywhere as popular and iconic as “Uncanny X-Men.” We all knew Uncanny X-Men #1 was going to Godzilla stomp everyone with the debut issue due to its impressive brand power. Of course, an eye-watering 9 open order variant covers, 2 reprint covers, 4 incentive covers, 11 retailer exclusive covers, and 2 event-exclusive covers doesn’t hurt, either.

X-Men #2 ticked down from the number 1 spot to the number 3 spot. No surprise here. It is the X-Men plus Jed MacKay. X-Men #3 fell from the number 3 spot to the number 15 spot. This is to be expected when a title ships two issues in the same month. I expect X-Men to be back in the Top 10 next month.

X-Factor #1 had a nice debut taking the number 11 spot. I have low expectations for this title going forward. Mark Russell is the writer and I have never been impressed with his work. Russell has also never had any sales success. But, maybe X-Factor will be Russell’s first hit? We shall see.

X-Force #2 plummetted from the number 10 spot to the number 50 spot. I expect this to happen since Geoffrey Thorne is the writer and he lacks any history of sales success.

NYX #2 crashed and burned falling from the number 8 spot to the number 51 spot. This was also predictable. Again, it’s Jackson Lanzig and Collin Kelly. This is to be expected. NYX seemed like a title doomed to plummet in the rankings when it was first announced.

When the X-Men relaunch was first introduced, my initial belief was that only X-Men and Uncanny X-Men would remain sales beasts. I do not see anything to dissuade me from my original opinion about this massive relaunch of the X-Men franchise titles.

Let’s go to the dudes of the X-Men franchise.

Wolverine: Revenge #1 had a great debut taking the number 10 spot. Wolverine: Revenger – Red Band #1 scored the number 13 spot. It’s Wolverine. It’s Jonathan Hickman. What else did you expect? This five-issue mini-series should remain a sales monster.

Hellverine #4 climbed from the number 84 spot to the number 52 spot. With this issue, this four-issue mini-series has concluded. Hellverine just missed out on being able to conclude in the Top 50. Still, this mini-series was a solid seller for Marvel Comics.

Wolverine: Deep Cut #2 climbed from the number 102 spot to the number 92 spot. It is good news that after debuting as a Dead Title Walking, Wolverine: Deep Cut was able to sneak back into the Top 100. That is not seen too often. Still, this four-issue mini-series is a sales failure.

Deadpool Team-Up #1 had an average debut taking the number 33 spot. The power of Rob Liefeld is not what it once was. This five-issue mini-series is going to have a tough time remaining in the Top 50.

Deadpool #5 climbed from the number 92 spot to the number 36 spot. This is still down from Deadpool #4 which took the number 25 spot in June 2024. We shall see if Cody Ziglar can keep this title in the Top 50 next month.

Let’s wrap up with the ladies of the X-Men franchise.

Phoenix #2 plummeted from the number 7 spot to the number 35 spot. I predicted that this title would score an impressive debut number but then quickly fall out of the Top 50 due to it being a Stephanie Phillips comic. It looks like Phoenix will be out of the Top 50 in short order.

Avengers Franchise

140 Captain America #12

155 Black Widow: Venomous #1  (Resolicitation)

159 Ultimates #2  (Resolicitation)

178 Ultimate Black Panther #6  (Resolicitation)

The Avengers franchise had one comic in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50. This was better than July 2024 when the Avengers franchise had one comic in the Top 10, four comics in the Top 25, and six comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as the Avengers franchise had two comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50 in August 2023.

Numbers were up from two years ago as the Avengers franchise had one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50 in August 2022.

Aliens vs. Avengers #1 had a nice debut taking the number 14 spot. This four-issue mini-series from Jonathan Hickman should be a strong seller.

Avengers #17 ticked up from the number 18 spot to the number 16 spot. This is the second straight month this title has climbed up in the rankings. Jed MacKay has been cooking on this title as of late.

Ultraman x The Avengers #1 had a terrible debut taking the number 114 spot. Ultraman continues to have a tough go of it over here in the States.

Let’s look at the dudes of the Avengers franchise.

Predator Vs. Black Panther #1 had a solid debut taking the number 21 spot. This four-issue mini-series is written by Joshua Williamson Award winner Benjamin Percy. So, I am confident this will be a good story.

Incredible Hulk #15 fell from the number 14 spot to the number 30 spot. This is roughly where Incredible Hulk #13 was in June 2024.

Immortal Thor #14 climbed from the number 51 spot to the number 39 spot. This title is back in the Top 50 where we normally find it.

Captain America #12 plummeted from the number 43 spot to the number 140 spot. This is the lowest that we have seen this JMS title since it debuted.

Get Fury #4 fell from the number 87 spot to the number 116 spot. I thought this five-issue mini-series had a good chance of concluding in the Top 100. It looks like I will be wrong.

Let’s finish with the ladies of the Avengers franchise.

Scarlet Witch #3 dropped from the number 67 spot to the number 84 spot. I predicted this title would drop out of the Top 75 this month. This is a comic that debuted at the number 22 spot in June 2024. Steve Orlando drove off a ton of readers in a short period.

Again, it was utterly bizarre to cancel Orlando’s Scarlet Witch and then roll out a new Scarlet Witch title seven months later still penned by Orlando. Marvel Comics should have switched out writers and seen if they could have more success with this new Scarlet Witch title.

Sensational She-Hulk #10 dropped from the number 98 spot to the number 101 spot. This title has been struggling to stay out of the Dead Titles Walking category for the past three months.

Fantastic Four Franchise

47 Fantastic Four #23

96 Fantastic Four #24

108 Fantastic Four #22 (Blood Hunt)  (Resolicitation)

120 Namor #2

The Fantastic Four franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50. This was worse than in July 2024 when the Fantastic Four franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50.

Fantastic Four #23 fell from the number 40 spot to the number 47 spot. Fantastic Four #24 fell to the number 96 spot. I would not panic over the large drop sustained by Fantastic Four #24. Shipping two issues in the same month is hard on any title outside of Amazing Spider-Man and Batman. I would expect to see this title rebound back into the Top 50 next month.

Namor #2 crashed and burned falling from the number 40 spot to the number 120 spot. With just the second issue, Jason Aaron has made Namor a Dead Title Walking by a wide margin. Aaron continues his trend of having some massive sales duds. Given how awful Aaron’s Punisher ended up I am not surprised that readers passed on Aaron’s “unique” take on Namor. This eight-issue mini-series is already a sales failure with just its second issue.

The Ultimate Universe

2 Ultimate Spider-Man #8

6 Ultimates #3

18 Ultimate Spider-Man #7  (Resolicitation)

23 Ultimate Black Panther #7

24 Ultimate X-Men #6

159 Ultimates #2  (Resolicitation)

169 Ultimate Spider-Man #1  (Resolicitation)

173 Ultimate X-Men #5  (Resolicitation)

175 Ultimate Spider-Man #6  (Resolicitation)

178 Ultimate Black Panther #6  (Resolicitation)

The Ultimate Universe had two comics in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50. This was worse in the Top 10, but better in the Top 25 and Top 50 than in July 2024 when the Ultimate Universe had three comics in the Top 10, four comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50.

Ultimate Spider-Man #8 climbed from the number 6 spot to the number 2 spot. This month, Ultimate Spider-Man regains the mantle as the best-selling Ultimate Universe title after two months of coming in second place to the Ultimates. I do not expect Ultimate Spider-Man to relinquish that honor from now on.

To be sure, Ultimate Spider-Man is the crown jewel of the Ultimate Universe franchise. Ultimate Spider-Man managed to place a resolicited issue at the number 18 spot which is insane. Even more impressive is that Ultimate Spider-Man #1 took the number 175 spot. It is exceedingly rare to see a resolicitation for an issue from eight months ago to make the Top 200.

Ultimates #3 fell from the number 3 spot to the number 6 spot. This title continues to exceed my expectations! It will be interesting to see how much longer this title can remain in the Top 10.

Ultimate Black Panther #7 dipped from the number 20 spot to the number 23 spot. This is the first month Ultimate Black Panther was not the lowest-selling Ultimate Universe title. That is because…

Ultimate X-Men #6 fell from the number 9 spot to the number 24 spot. This is a big drop for this title that had been in the Top 10 every month since its debut. Next month will be pivotal to see if Ultimate X-Men can remain in the Top 25 and if it can zip past Ultimate Black Panther.

Unranked: The Batman and Scooby-Doo Mysteries #8

Unranked: Batman and Robin and Howard: Summer Breakdown #2

The Batman franchise had one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50. This was better in the Top 10 and Top 25 but worse in the Top 50 than in July 2024 when the Batman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and six comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as the Batman franchise had one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50 in August 2023.

Numbers were way down from two years ago as the Batman franchise had one comic in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and twelve comics in the Top 50 in August 2022.

Let’s start with the Bruce Wayne titles.

Batman #151 climbed from the number 26 spot to the number 4 spot.

Batman Superman World’s Finest #30 ticked up from the number 42 spot to the number 41 spot. Talk about consistency! This title remains a lock for the Top 50 every month.

Batman Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age #3 fell from the number 34 spot to the number 57 spot. This title was originally solicited as a twelve-issue mini-series and is now solicited as a six-issue mini-series. So, there is that. Either way, this mini-series seems to be headed to concluding in the Top 100.

Dark Knights of Steel Allwinter #2 fell from the number 25 spot to the number 77 spot. This large drop for the second issue was not a surprise given the mediocre debut number. This six-issue mini-series has a steep hill to climb in order to conclude in the Top 100.

Detective Comics #1088 fell from the number 54 spot to the number 79 spot. This is the lowest that we have seen this title in a long time. Normally, Detective Comics can at least make the Top 75.

Batman and Robin #12 ticked down from the number 80 spot to the number 81 spot. This title has found its happy place in the 80s of the sales rankings for three straight months.

Batman Off-World #5 plummeted from the number 74 spot to the number 139 spot. I am sure that the horrendous shipping schedule by DC Comics did not help any. Batman Off-World #4 shipped way back in April 2024. At any rate, this six-issue mini-series seems doomed to conclude in the Dead Walking Titles category. Chalk this up as another sales dud from Jason Aaron.

Batman Dark Age #5 fell from the number 109 spot to the number 146 spot. This is the third straight month that this six-issue mini-series has been in the Dead Titles Walking category. This is what we come to expect from any title written by Mark Russell.

Batman the Brave and the Bold #16 crashed from the number 148 spot to the number 199 spot. THis is the second month that this title has flirted with being unranked. In June 2024, Brave and the Bold #14 clung to the number 198 spot. Next month will be big to see if this title can rally once more or if it finally succumbs to being unranked.

Let’s get to the Batboys of the Batman franchise

Nightwing #117 fell from the number 32 spot to the number 37 spot. All is normal on this title as we always find it somewhere in the bottom half of the Top 50.

The Boy Wonder #4 bounced up from the number 171 spot to the number 109 spot. That was a nice rally, but this five-issue mini-series seems doomed to live in the Dead Walking Titles category.

Let’s conclude with the team titles of the Batman franchise.

Gotham City Sirens #1 debuted at the number 19 spot. Gotham City Sirens #2 fell to the number 28 spot. Gotham City Sirens #3 dropped to the number 61 spot. Gotham City Sirens #4 fell to the number 99 spot. With that issue, this four-issue mini-series concludes in an unimpressive fashion. However, it is tough on any title to ship four issues in any month. This title held serve well between the first and second issues, but the bottom of the floor fell out from under this title for the third and fourth issues.

Birds of Prey #12 rebounded from the number 175 spot to the number 94 spot. After the past two issues of Birds of Prey dwelling in the Dead Titles Walking category, this title manages to climb back into the Top 100. The next few months will be pivotal for this title.

Outsiders #10 fell from the number 173 spot to the number 194 spot. This Jackson Lanzig and Collin Kelly title has been a predictable sales failure. Can this twelve-issue mini-series manage to avoid going unranked before it concludes? We shall see!

Superman Franchise

27 Superman #17 (Absolute Power)

41 Batman Superman World’s Finest #30

54 Action Comics #1068

163 Power Girl #12

189 My Adventures with Superman #3 (Of 6)

196 Kneel Before Zod #8 (Of 8)

The Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50. This was worse than in July 2024 when the Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as the Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50 in August 2023.

However, numbers were up from two years ago as the Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and zero comics in the Top 50 in August 2022.

Superman #17 fell from the number 13 spot to the number 27 spot. Well, that one-month run of being in the Top 25 was fun.

Action Comics #1068 fell from the number 30 spot to the number 54 spot. This is basically where Action Comics #1066 was in June 2024 when it took the number 53 spot.

My Adventures with Superman #3 went from being unranked and barely climbed back into the Top 200 and took the number 189 spot. This six-issue limited series from Josie Campbell continues to be an unmitigated sales disaster.

Let’s check out the lone lady of the Superman franchise.

Power Girl #12 fell from the number 136 spot to the number 163 spot. This is the fourth straight month that Leah Williams’ Power Girl has been in the Dead Titles Walking category. I hope that DC Comics simply replaces Williams with a better writer rather than canceling this title. Power Girl deserves better.

Let’s wrap up with the villain of the Superman franchise.

Kneel Before Zod #8 snuck back into the Top 200 and took the number 196 spot. This snapped a four-month streak of being unranked. This mini-series was a complete sales debacle.

The Justice League franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50. This was worse than in July 2024 when the Justice League franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as the Justice League franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50 in August 2023.

However, numbers were up from two years ago as the Justice League franchise had zero comics in the Top 50 in August 2022.

Green Lantern #14 fell from the number 37 spot to the number 55 spot. Welp, that ends the run one run in the Top 50 for this title.

Green Lantern War Journal #12 ticked down from the number 142 spot to the number 148 spot. With this issue, this title mercifully comes to an end as DC Comics has canceled it. This title was a sales dud from the start.

Green Arrow #15 plummeted from the number 76 spot to the number 129 spot. This is about where Green Arrow #13 was in June 2024 when it took the number 120 spot. The sales bump from being an Absolute Power tie-in issue only lasted a single month.

The Flash #12 fell from the number 97 spot to the number 138 spot. After a one-month respite from the Dead Titles Walking category, the Flash makes a quick return. This title is such a mess. The Flash franchise should not be performing this terribly.

Let’s finish with the ladies of the Justice League franchise

Wonder Woman #12 fell from the number 15 spot to the number 25 spot.

Zatanna Bring Down the House #3 plummeted from the number 21 spot to the number 65 spot. There is the sales drop that I was expecting. I found Mariko Tamaki’s story to be unreadable. It looks like other die-hard Zatanna fans like me finally gave up on this five-issue mini-series.

Mantle Swap Comics

66 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #23 (Marvel Comics)

71 Phases of the Moon Knight #1 (Marvel Comics)

103 Miles Morales Spider-Man Annual #1 (Marvel Comics)

135 Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #2 (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: Blue Beetle #11 (DC Comics)

There were zero mantle swap comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and zero comics in the Top 50. This was worse than in July 2024 when there were zero mantle swap comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as there were zero mantle swap comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50 in August 2023.

Numbers were flat from two years ago as there were zero mantle swap comics in the the Top 50 in August 2022.

Phases of the Moon Knight #1 had a horrendous debut coming in at the number 71 spot. This four-issue mini-sereis is going to struggle to avoid the Dead Titles Walking category. Reader interest is low in mantle-swap Moon Knight stories.

Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #2 crashed and burned falling from the number 74 spot to the number 135 spot. With just the second issue, Daredevil: Woman Without Fear is firmly a Dead Title Walking. This is no surprise given the terrible debut number this title had last month.

This title is emblematic of the many problems plaguing Marvel Comics editorial staff. Nobody outside of Marvel’s editors finds Electra as a mantle-swap Daredevil to be interesting. And nobody outside of Marvel’s editors thinks that Erica Schultz is a good selection to write a mainstream superhero comic book.

Blue Beetle #11 was unranked for a second consecutive month. This is also the third time in four months that this title has been unranked. I am unsure why DC Comics keeps ramming this round peg into a square hole. We see this with title after title. Nobody is interested in a title starring Jamie Reyes.

163 Power Girl #12 (DC Comics)

194 Outsiders #10 (DC Comics)

There were zero legacy character comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50. This was better/worse/flat than July 2024 when there was one legacy character comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were up/down/flat as there were zero legacy character comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50 in August 2023.

Titans #14 ticked up from the number 71 spot to the number 69 spot. This is two consecutive months that Titans has climbed in the rankings.

Numbers were up/down/flat in the Top 100 from two years ago as there were six female lead comics in the Top 100 in August 2022.

DC Comics slaughtered Marvel Comics 8-2 in the Top 100. What an embarrassment for Marvel Comics. Having said that this will be a short-lived win for DC Comics. Four of DC Comics’ eight issues were from Gotham City Sirens which has now concluded. It will also be a challenge for Jenny Sparks and Zatanna to remain in the Top 100. So, next month might look dramatically different.

Jenny Sparks #1 had a terrible debut coming in at the number 74 spot. This comic is another sales dud for Tom King. King continues to struggle to get good sales numbers when he is not paired with a high-profile character like Batman. This six-issue mini-series has a good chance of being in the Dead Titles Walking category next month.

Primer: Clashing Colors #2 was unranked. This is normal as Primer has always been unranked.

Marvel Comics won by a score of 3-0. But, it is clear that DC Comics has waived the white flag and has not even attempted to be competitive in this category for two years.

Dead Titles Walking

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, titles outside of the Top 100 are usually selling under the 18,000 unit sales mark. These are the Marvel Comics and DC Comics titles that are dead titles walking.

This was up from the thirty-nine dead titles that Image Comics had in July 2024 which comprised 75% of Image Comics’ new titles.

This highlights the importance of profitable licenses from Hasbro and Universal since all of the other random indie titles from Image Comics fail to even make the Top 200.

Image Comics took third place with twenty-five new comics in the Top 200 in August 2024.

BOOM! Studios had eighteen dead titles walking out of BOOM! Studios’ nineteen new titles in August 2024. This means that 95% of the new BOOM! Studios titles in August 2023 were dead titles walking.

It is disappointing to see how poorly the Power Rangers titles are performing. The Power Rangers should be a valuable license. One needs to only look over at Image Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, and IDW Publishing to see how properties from the 1960s-1990s can perform well in the Top 200.

Having said that, I am not surprised that the two Power Rangers titles are dead titles walking. The farther BOOM! Studios gets away from the classic Power Rangers and the more “modern” their take on the Power Rangers gets the less popular it will become.

Power Rangers: Infinity #1 failing to even debut in the Top 200 is a total disaster. This is no surprise as this comic looked as cringe as possible.

BOOM! Studios took fourth place with seven new comics in the Top 200 in August 2024.

Titan Comics tied for sixth place with three new comics in the Top 200.

IDW Publishing had twelve dead titles walking out of IDW Publishing’s thirteen new titles in August 2024. This means that 92% of the new IDW Publishing’s titles in August 2023 were dead titles walking.

My Little Pony franchise appears to be dead in the water with all three titles from that franchise going unranked.

Even more concerning is that the Star Trek license appears to be useless in the hands of IDW Publishing. Both Star Trek titles went unranked. IDW Publishing continues its trend of fumbling its licenses. The best move Hasbro made was pulling their license from IDW Publishing.

IDW Publishing tied for sixth place with three new comics in the Top 200 in August 2024.

The Tini Howard Award For The Writer With The Most Dead Titles Walking

We had several writers with two issues in the Dead Titles Walking category in August 2024.

Rodney Barnes had two issues in the Dead Walking titles category with Star Wars: Inquisitors #2 at the number 115 spot and Star Wars: Ahsoka #2 at the number 134 spot.

Cavan Scott had two issues in the Dead Walking titles category with Venom War Zombiotes #1 at the number 126 spot and Star Wars: The High Republic (Phase III) #10 at the number 128 spot.

Steve Foxe had two issues in the Dead Walking titles category with Chasm: Curse of Kaine #1 at the number 133 spot and Spider-Woman #10 at the number 167 spot.

Simon Spurrier had two issues in the Dead Walking titles category with The Flash #12 at the number 138 spot and John Constantine, Hellblazer Dead in America #8 at the number 150 spot.

Jason Aaron had two issues in the Dead Walking titles category with Namor #2 at the number 120 spot and Batman Off-World #5 at the number 139 spot. Aaron is a case of a “big name” writer who has precipitously fallen off the cliff regarding his ability to have sales success based on his name.

Josie Campbell had two issues in the Dead Walking titles category with Shazam #14 at the number 152 spot and My Adventures with Superman #3 at the number 189 spot.

Well, this is a fascinating month and a first for the Tini Howard Award! We have a six-way tie with all writers having two issues in the Dead Titles Walking Category. On top of that, we continue to have a six-way tie even when going to the first tie-breaker! This has never happened before. All of the writers have one ongoing title and one limited series as their two issues in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Therefore, we have to go to the second round tie-breaker which is the average position of the two issues each writer has in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Barnes averaged the number 125 spot.

Scott averaged the number 127 spot.

Aaron averaged the number 130 spot.

Spurrier averaged the number 144 spot.

Foxe averaged the number 150 spot.
