CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Scott Snyder; Artist: Nick Dragotta; Colorist: Frank Martin; Letterer: Clayton Cowles

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

Absolute Batman #1 to Absolute Batman #3

In a year filled with many new comic books debuting one of the comics that had the strongest starts was Absolute Batman. While only three issues were released in 2024 they were all impactful in laying the foundation for a comic book that will no doubt be in contention for best of 2025. That is the type of magic Scott Snyder, Nick Gragotta, and co. have captured with the start of Absolute Batman.

The world they have presented is filled with opportunities to do something completely new and fresh. The Absolute Universe’s Gotham City they’ve created gives off a vibe that feels lived in a different way from its DC Universe counterpart. This in turn makes what Bruce Wayne’s place in it is something that adds to the sense of discovery that is tapped into with each issue. That leads to a strong foundation to give the maximum momentum for this series entering the new year.

14) SCARLET WITCH

Best Comic Book Series 2024: Scarlet Witch
Credit: Marvel Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Steve Orlando; Artists: Lorenzo Tammetta, Jacopo Camagni, and Russell Dauterman; Colorists: Frank William and Matthew Wilson; Letterer: Ariana Maher

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #1 to Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #4; Scarlet Witch #1 to Scarlet Witch #7

The 2023 volume of Scarlet Witch established Wanda Maximoff as a solo hero. For 2024 Steve Orlando set out to have the Scarlet Witch comics reestablish her bonds. That was something he was doing previously but really went all in with his work on Scarlet Witch’s comics in 2024. This is shown with how this year was about restoring Wanda’s bond with her brother Pietro Maximoff, aka Quicksilver, after it broke because of the tension created by their respective dynamic with Magneto. The repairing of their sibling bond set the tone for Wanda to reestablish other relationships like with Vision, Wiccan, Speed, Agatha, and others.

Having this family dynamic added layers to the further exploration of Scarlet Witch’s connection to the Darkhold and rest of Marvel’s magic realm. Orlando had a great team of artists in Lorenzo Tammetta, Jacopo Camagni, and Russell Dauterman to make how Scarlet Witch’s powers were explore pop of the screen. The vibrant artwork, with Frank William and Matthew Wilson coloring, just added to how every Scarlet Witch issue felt like a big adventure.

13) SENSATIONAL SHE-HULK

Best Comic Book Series 2024: Sensational She-Hulk
Credit: Marvel Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Rainbow Rowell; Artists: Ig Guara and Andres Genolet; Inker: ; Colorists: Dee Cunniffe; Letterer: Joe Caramagna

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

Sensational She-Hulk #4 to Sensational She-Hulk #10

Sensational She-Hulk by Rainbow Rowell, Ig Guara, and Andres Genolet is an excellent example of how a comic book can create adventures through a superhero’s daily life. This series was a slice-of-life superhero comic book with the superhero stuff taking a backseat. There were certainly enough superhero things we saw She-Hulk do. But what made this special was how Jennifer Walters managed all facets of her life from work to romance to being a superhero.

Making the entire experience reading Sensation She-Hulk special was the unique supporting cast Rowell, Guara, and Genolet assembled. There were characters from all corners of the Marvel Universe. Having such a unique supporting cast opened up where this series could go so no setting felt out of place for She-Hulk to find herself in. The supporting cast complimented She-Hulk and made her resolve with the various things that she was faced with. This was all a reminder of how a strong supporting cast is as important as the series lead.

12) BLOW AWAY

Best Comic Book Series 2024: Blow Away
Credit: BOOM! Studios

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Zac Thompson; Artist: Nicola Izzo; Colorists: Francesco Segala and Gloria Martinelli; Letterer: DC Hopkins

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

Blow Away #1 to Blow Away #5

The tension created by the isolated setting for Blow Away’s series lead, Brynne Brautigan, set the tone right away. It provided the explanation for what Brynne was doing up in the snowy mountain setting to document a story. How that story turned into Brynne discovering a horrific event and proving what she saw wasn’t just because of how long she was conducting her research alone was fascinating.

The mystery that Brynne found herself in was made by how well Zac Thompson and Nicola Izzo worked together as a creative team. There was so much environmental storytelling that was done that added to the tension felt in most of the story. The tension created in the barely populated setting made for a stronger conclusion when the world opened up. It all built up to a strong conclusion with Brynne showing her strength of character as she was faced with so many who didn’t want to believe her or cover up the event she accidentally witnessed.

11) AIN’T NO GRAVE

Best Comic Book Series 2024: Ain't No Grave
Credit: Image Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Skottie Young; Artist: Jorge Corona; Colorist: Jean-Francois Beaulieu; Letterer: Nate Piekos

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

Ain’t No Grave #1 to Ain’t No Grave #5

Skottie Young and Jorge Corona build such a fascinating world in Ain’t No Grave. As we get to know Ryder as a lead character the more the world opens up. It doesn’t just open up in physical size. The world built in Ain’t No Grave grows with how the western and dark fantasy genres are blended together. It is a credit to how strong Ryder’s character grew over the course of the five issues.

The conclusion of Ain’t No Grave in particular stood out. What was set-up as a typical revenge epic became something much more as Ryder faced off against literal Death. Jorge Corona does a lot of great work framing everything in the final battle that maximize the space given in each panel and page. What was done in the final issue elevated the story to ultimately feel like a grand epic. Being able to do that by the end shows how all the character and world building Skottie Young and Corona pulled off.

10) AVENGERS: TWILIGHT

Best Comic Book Series 2024: Avengers: Twilight
Credit: Marvel Comics

Writer: Chip Zdarsky; Artist: Daniel Acuña; Letterer: Cory Petit

STORYLINE COMIC BOOK ISSUES

Avengers: Twilight #1 to Avengers: Twilight #6

Alternate universes where the world turns on heroes and forces them to retire are a dime a dozen in comic books. So it is a testament to Chip Zdarsky and Daniel Acuña world building ability that you don’t compare Avengers: Twilight to other similar stories. They take the freedom given to them to create a new Marvel Universe to keep you in the moment of what your reading. That comes down to how they nail the sense of discovery as the layers of what cause the Avengers and other heroes to retire are pulled back.

Zdarsky and Acuña utilized real world elements of how corporations and governments turn on the PR machine to fool their target market to buy whatever they are selling. The direction of this universe led to how the older Avengers had to reassemble to save a world that didn’t know needed saving be a compelling tale to tell. This led to this mini-series not just being a great Avengers story but also a memorable chapter in the iconic Captain America vs Red Skull rivalry.

9) I HEART SKULL CRUSHER!

Best Comic Book Series 2024: I Heart Skull Crusher
Credit: BOOM! Studios

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Josie Campbell; Artist: Alessio Zonno; Colorist: Angel De Santiago; Letterer: Jim Campbell

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

I Heart Skull-Crusher! #1 to I Heart Skull-Crusher! #7

Josie Campbell and Alessio Zonno blend webtoons style storytelling and design with the comic book medium incredibly well with I Heart Skull Crusher. Rather than using this style to tell a superhero story they tell a story of a young woman who dreams of playing the extreme sport her idol plays. Creating an extreme sport unique to this world, called Screaming Pain Ball, made the post-apocalyptic setting be more of a backdrop rather than what the story is about.

Trini being a young athlete looking to prove herself in the sport and become like her idol is such a great way to start off a journey. Trini being such an energetic character added to how different this series was from other stories that have similar settings. Trini’s character made the other characters that are more familiar to this type of world stand out as they each complimented Trini as a lead. How her journey turns her dream into a big reality check when entering the Screaming Pain Ball world provides a lot of intriguing challenges for Trini to overcome.

8) TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES

Best Comic Book Series 2024: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Credit: IDW Publishing

CREATIVE TEAM

Writers: Sophie Campbell and Jason Aaron; Artists: Vincenzo Federici, Fero Pe, Dan Duncan, Sophie Campbell, Joelle Jones, Rafael Albuquerque, Cliff Chiang, Chris Burnham, and Darick Robertson; Inker: Fero Pe Colorists: Ronda Pattison, Luis Antonio Delgado, Marcelo Maiolo, Brian Reber, and Norm Rapmund; Letterer: Shawn Lee

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #147 to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #150; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2024-) #1 to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2024-) #5

2024 started with Sophie Campbell ending her well received 4+ year creative run on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and ended with Jason Aaron beginning his TMNT creative run. Showing the talent of both Campbell and Aaron, the transition between the two creators was absolutely seamless. Campbell was able to create a satisfying conclusion that wrapped up all the lose ends from all the work she did on TMNT. At the same time, she left the TMNT franchise in a spot filled with potential follow-up for whoever followed Campbell’s conclusion.

Taking that set-up, Aaron gave a soft reset for the TMNT franchise by starting out his run by focusing on each individual turtle and then the state of New York City. It was a great way for Aaron to establish the voice of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello while continuing the TMNT universe Campbel, Tom Waltz, and Kevin Eastman have crafted before him. Dedicating full issues on each turtle also gave way for each artist Aaron worked with to deliver a style that was fitting for where Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello were each at right now. It showed Aaron will continue the legacy of making IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the most consistent title on the market.

7) THE BOY WONDER

Best Comic Book Series 2024: The Boy Wonder
Credit: DC Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer and Artist: Juni Ba; Colorist: Chris O’Halloran; Letterer: Aditya Bidikar

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

The Boy Wonder #1 to The Boy Wonder #5

The Boy Wonder is such a wonderful, unexpected experience. Juni Ba maximizes his style of storytelling by framing Damian Wayne’s story in fairytale-esque way. This framing style made how Damian’s relationship with the Batman Family, particularly with his Robin brothers, such a fascinating character study. Ba really dug into how Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, and Jason Todd represent something different to him as examples to follow and not follow. In the process each issue was able to delve into each Robin so they all came out of this story more interesting characters.

The relationship Damian shares with his Robin brothers fed in well with the internal struggle he has with his two families. Damian is truly a child of two worlds as being part of the Batman Family clashes with how he was raised by Ra’s and Talia Al Ghul. How Damian must end up facing the patriarchs of each family, Bruce Wayne and Ra’s Al Ghul, spoke to the growth his character has had since being introduced. By the end The Boy Wonder ends up becoming a wonderful reminder of what makes the Batman Family special.

6) PINE AND MERRIMAC

Best Comic Book Series 2024: Pine and Merrimac
Credit: BOOM! Studios

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Kyle Starks; Artist: Fran Galán; Letterer: Pat Brosseau

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

Pine and Merrimac #1 to Pine and Merrimac #5

If there was a comic book that is the equivalent to the “How it Started…..How It Ended” meme it is Pine and Merrimac. This series makes such great use of Fran Galán’s artwork that taps into the small town vibes the series is set in and twist things the deeper the lead characters got into the mystery they are given to investigate. Kyle Starks knew exactly what type of art talent he was working with Galán to maximize the style with the sense of discovery to the entire story.

It is all held down by a married couple in Linnea and Parker that you fully buy into their supportive relationship. These two have each others back like you want to see from a couple. They balance each other so well that your investment in their own safety as the danger increases with every passing issue. This elevates the story so once they get close to the answers the threat they are facing create great amount of tension to how things end. The execution of the entire story leaves you hoping this isn’t the last time we see Linnea and Parker as a mystery duo.

5) ABSOLUTE POWER

Best Comic Book Series 2024: Absolute Power
Credit: DC Comics

Writers: Mark Waid, Nicole Maines, Chip Zdarsky, and Joshua Williamson; Artists: Dan Mora, Skylar Patridge, V Ken Marion, and Gleb Melnikov; Colorists: Alejandro Sanchez and Patricio Delpeche; Letterers: Adriana Maher, and Steve Wands

STORYLINE COMIC BOOK ISSUES

Absolute Power: Ground Zero; Absolute Power #1 to Absolute Power #4

Mark Waid, Dan Mora, and their fellow collaborators deliver a Crisis-level event without needing that as part of the name of Absolute Power. This event lived up to creating a satisfying payoff to the two year development around Amanda Waller’s character post-Dark Crisis. DC Comics invested a lot of time using key titles such as Batman, Green Arrow, Superman, and Titans to develop this story over the course of two years.

Amanda Waller rewarded all that development time by immediately pushing the heroes into a corner by depowering the majority of the DC Universe’s hero community. Kicking off Absolute Power in this way showed that there would be no time wasted in this four issue big event. That was carried over to all the issues as Waller and her Dark Trinity did not give the heroes much time to regroup. With their time limited it made the characters that stepped up to lead the heroes like Nightwing and Mister Terrific even more impressive. The way the heroes overcame everything Waller threw at them showed why the DC Universe heroes are special and laid the foundation to create the new Justice League Unlimited.

4) MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS: THE RETURN

Best Comic Book Series 2024: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return
Credit: BOOM! Studios

CREATIVE TEAM

Writers: Amy Jo Johnson and Matt Hotson; Artist: Nico Leon; Colorist: Dono Sanchez-Almara; Letterer: Ed Dukeshire

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #1 to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #4

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return is fan service at its best. Amy Jo Johnson and Matt Hotson deliver an incredible love letter to the team that started the 30 year legacy of the franchise. They do this by simply answering “What if the Power Transfer story didn’t happen and the original Power Rangers stayed together?” This answer spun off to provide us an alternate universe that was just as compelling as the original.

Having the story take place almost two decades after Jason, Zack,Trini, Billy, Kimberly, and Tommy graduated high school was a nice touch. It opened the story to be able to tell a history lesson for this universe that expands on the unexpected threat they are faced with. The threat coming as a fallout to the final battle between the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa was well executed. It was able to honor the legacy of the team while telling something completely new. By the end we are left with a new Power Rangers universe that fans hope is revisited in the future.

3) NIGHTWING

Best Comic Book Series 2024: Nightwing
Credit: DC Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writers: Tom Taylor, Michael W. Conrad, Marv Wolfman, Travis Moore, and Dan Watters; Artists: Sam Basri, Francesco Francavilla, Daniel Di Nicuolo, Bruno Redondo, Howard Porter, Travis Moore, and Dexter Soy; Inker: Vicente Cifuentes; Colorists: Adriano Lucas, Alex Guimaraes, Ivan Plascencia, and Veronica Gandini; Letterer: Wes Abbott

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

Nightwing #110 to Nightwing #121; Nightwing Annual 2024

2024 saw the end of Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo’s Nightwing run. And what a run it was. Taylor, Redondo, and their other collaborators made sure their final year was as strong as the previous few years. They did a fantastic job building the last ten issues to tell a compelling narrative that challenged who Dick Grayson has become in and out of being Nightwing.

There is no doubt that the Heartless Saga that Taylor and Redondo ended with was a memorable way to wrap things up. But what will be the greater takeaway from all they accomplished was how the superhero stories were a gateway to explore Nightwing’s various relationships. From the Batman Family to the Titans, we saw a character in Dick Grayson who has built an incredible extended family that is there to support him. They even have one of the most touching tributes to Marv Wolfman and George Perez that really sums up why this was such a special creative run. And thus far Dan Watters and Dexter Soy have done a great job building on the foundation Taylor and Redondo created.

2) ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN

Best Comic Book Series 2024: Ultimate Spider-Man
Credit: Marvel Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jonathan Hickman; Artists: Marco Checchetto and David Messina; Colorist: Matthew Wilson; Letterer: Cory Petit

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

Ultimate Spider-Man #1 to Ultimate Spider-Man #12

Jonathan Hickman, Marco Checchetto, and David Messina delivered the Spider-Man book that I’ve hoped for we would see Marvel publish for years now. There is this feeling around Ultimate Spider-Man has a freedom in storytelling that we aren’t seeing anywhere else for the franchise. That taps into the concept of the Ultimate Universe being free of the main Marvel Universe continuity to do something new with iconic characters. That is definitely what reading Ultimate Spider-Man every month in 2024 felt like.

And all that had to be done was explore what it would mean for Peter Parker to become Spider-Man in his 30s after being married and raising a family together with MJ. It is a truly simple concept that Hickman, Checchetto, and Messina maximize. The relationship Peter has with MJ and their kids is so captivating. Portraying such a strong family dynamic extends to the rest of the supporting cast as the new way Uncle Ben, J. Jonah Jameson, Harry Osborn, and Gwen Stacy are presented are just as refreshing. This all makes how the greater Ultimate Universe narrative is integrated into the Spider-Man adventures hit harder.

1) TRANSFORMERS

Best Comic Book Series 2024: Transformers
Credit: Image Comics & Skybound

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson; Artists: Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona; Inker: ; Colorist: Mike Spicer; Letterer: Rus Wooton

ISSUES RELEASED IN 2024

Transformers #4 to Transformers #15

For all the amazing comic books that we got this year no series had me on the edge of my seat every I read a new issue like Image Comics and Skybound’s Transformers. Daniel Warren Johns and Jorge Corona took the eternal war between the Autobots and Decepticons to another level within the newly created Energon Universe. They did so by taking the original characters and presenting them in a modern way that shows what the response to the Transformers landing on Earth would be. Their arrival created a revolution that has massive ramifications that set the foundation for not just this franchise but also those of the G.I. JOE and Void Rivals. These ramifications further got over how special this series is.

These ramifications ended up putting over the Decepticons as the biggest threats in the Energon Universe. How the Decepticons constantly pushed the Autobots into the corner created as you’re left wondering if Optimus Prime’s team can overcome the odds. That wonderment at various points creates a sense of dread as an answer to all the Autobots problems seems like won’t be found. This led to the decisions that Optimus Prime has to make as the leader be even more important and consequential. Where those decisions lead to build even greater momentum for this series to make Transformers the series I most look forward to reading every month. And that is continuing going into 2025.
