Chainsaw Man Volume 9

February 2022 Graphic Novels Sales Charts

Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 14

It is that time of the month when we get to check out the latest graphic novels sales numbers. As always, ICv2 is the best source for these sales numbers. ICv2 released several sales charts for MONTH 20xx including the ComicHub Top 100 Graphic Novels, the Top 20 Author Graphic Novels, Top 20 Superheroes Graphic Novels, Top 20 Manga Graphic Novels, and Top 20 Adult Graphic Novels.

The ComicHub Top 100 Graphic Novels sales chart is based on point-of-sale numbers by the ComicHub system at stores selling American comics around the world. During the period for which these reports were generated, there were over 100 stores using the ComicHub system.

The Top 20 Author Graphic Novels, Top 20 Superheroes Graphic Novels, Top 20 Manga Graphic Novels, and Top 20 Adult Graphic Novels sales charts are all based on NPD BookScan numbers. NPD BookScan collects weekly point-of-sale data on print books from over 16,000 locations through direct reporting from all major retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Target, independent bookstores, and many others. NPD BookScan covers approximately 85% of the U.S. trade print book market.

ComicHub February 2022 Top 100 Graphic Novels Sales Chart

Top 10

  1. Moon Knight By Bendis & Maleev The Complete Collection (Marvel Comics)
  2. Maus Complete Collection (Pantheon Books)
  3. Moon Knight Vol. 1 Midnight Missions (Marvel Comics)
  4. Saga Vol. 1 (Image Comics)
  5. Chainsaw Man Vol. 9 (Viz Media)
  6. Critical Role Mighty Nein Origins HC Caleb Widogast (Dark Horse Comics)
  7. Deadpool Samurai Vol. 1 (Viz Media)
  8. Something is Killing the Children Vol. 1 (Boom! Studios)
  9. Something Is Killing The Children Vol. 4 (Boom! Studios)
  10. Mighty Marvel Masterworks Doctor Strange World Beyond Vol. 1 (Marvel Comics)

Marvel Comic took first place with three titles. I feel terrible for the poor saps who bought the Bendis Moon Knight collection because of the excitement over the new Moon Knight Disney+ show. You guys are in store for a bad read.

Viz and Boom tied for second place with two titles apiece. It is interesting to see that Chainsaw Man Vol. 9 managed to beat Deadpool Samurai Vol. 1. This shows the power of Chainsaw Man becoming such a hot property.

Image, Dark Horse Comics, and Pantheon Books all placed one title in the Top 10. Maus managed to take the number two spot. This is just another example of how book banning only leads to an even more increased interest in the book that is being banned. Book banning is stupid. But, at least a great graphic novel like Maus benefited from it.

It is worth noting that DC Comics placed zero titles in the Top 10.

Top 25

  1. Teen Titans Go DC Super Hero Girls Exchange Students GN (DC Comics)
  2. Captain America Truth (Marvel Comics)

  5. Berserk Dlx. Ed. Vol. 1 HC (Dark Horse Comics)
  6. Milestone Compendium Vol. 1 (DC Comics)
  7. Batman White Knight Presents Harley Quinn (DC Comics)
  8. Saga Vol. 2 (Image Comics)
  9. Jujutsu Kaisen Vol. 1 (Viz Media)

  11. Maus Survivors Tale Vol. 1 My Father Bleeds History (Pantheon Books)
  12. Sandman Vol. 1 Preludes & Nocturnes 30th Ann. Ed. (DC Comics)
  13. Sonic Hedgehog Sonic & Tails Best Buds Forever (IDW Publishing)
  14. Jujutsu Kaisen Vol. 14 (Viz Media)
  15. Batman Year One Dlx. Ed. (DC Comics)

Viz tied DC Comics for first place in the Top 25 as both placed five titles in the Top 25. Let’s let this sink in for a minute. The ComicHub system is used by local comic book shops selling American comics. This is the long-time traditional home of Marvel Comics and DC Comics. Here we have manga invading the home turf of Marvel and DC. This is amazing. Viz managing to tie for first place in the Top 25 in the home-court of Marvel and DC shows the rise of manga as it now dominates the comic book industry. Viz tying for first place in sales at local comic book shops is definitely a case of the fox entering the hen house and wreaking havoc. It also should be noted that Viz’s Top 25 success came from four different franchises.

Now, even though DC Comics was shut out of the Top 10, at least they beat Marvel Comics in the Top 25. Barely. It should be noted that two of DC Comics’ five titles were from the Batman franchise.

Marvel took third place with four titles in the Top 25. Marvel’s titles came from several different franchises.

Dark Horse Comics placed three titles in the Top 25. Image, Boom, and Pantheon Books all placed two titles in the Top 25. AWA and IDW Publishing had one title apiece in the Top 25.

Top 50

  6. Something is Killing the Children Vol. 2 (BOOM! Studios)
  7. My Hero Academia Vol. 1 (VIZ Media)

  13. Mighty Marvel Masterworks Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 2 (Marvel Comics)
  14. Not All Robots (AWA)
  15. Space Bastards Special Delivery (Humanoids Inc.)
  16. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing Collected Vol. 1 (IDW Publishing)
  17. Seven Deadly Sins Omnibus Vol. 1 (Kodansha Comics)
  18. Nightwing Vol. 1 Leaping Into The Light HC (DC Comics)
  19. Undiscovered Country Vol. 3 (Image Comics)
  20. Saga Compendium Vol. 1 (Image Comics)
  21. Stillwater By Zdarsky & Perez Vol. 2 (Image Comics)
  22. Flintstones The Dlx. Ed. HC (DC Comics)
  23. Captain America Truth (Marvel Comics)
  24. Night Hunters (Floating World Comics)
  25. Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries Vol. 1 (DC Comics)

Holy crap. Viz continues to amaze with their success in the backyard of Marvel Comics and DC Comics. Viz tied Image Comics for first place as both placed nine titles each in the Top 50. This is such an impressive showing by Viz being able to beat both Marvel Comics and DC Comics on their own turf.

What is also great to see is that Viz’s success comes from a diverse selection of franchises. Viz’s nine titles came from six different franchises.

Image Comics also impressed with their first-place tie with Viz. It is remarkable that Image Comics beat out both Marvel Comics and DC Comics in the Top 50 sales. This is a testament to Image Comics as well as a statement about the declining power of DC Comics and Marvel Comics.

DC Comics and Marvel Comics tied for third place as each had eight titles in the Top 50. To no surprise, four of DC Comics’ eight titles were from the Batman franchise. This continues an alarming trend.

Marvel Comics pulled from a diversity of franchises for their eight titles which is normal for them.

Boom placed four titles in the Top 50. That is a solid showing for Boom. Dark Horse Comics took sixth place with three titles. Pantheon Books, AWA, and IDW Publishing all tied with two titles apiece. Kodansha Comics, Humanoids Inc., and Floating World Comics each put one title in the Top 50.

Top 75

Image took first place with fifteen titles in the Top 75. This is an impressive showing for Image Comics. I know that Image Comics cannot keep pace with the sheer volume of single issue comic books that Marvel Comics and DC Comics publish each month. But, when it comes to graphic novels, Image Comics took on the supposed Big Two and beat them both. Kudos to Image.

Viz pulls off a major shocker by taking second place with fourteen titles in the Top 75 and beating both Marvel Comics and DC Comics. This is just so impressive given how local comic book shops are supposedly the safe space for American superhero comic books. What is even more exciting is that Viz achieved this success off of eight different franchises. This is not the case of just one or two franchises powering all of manga’s success in local comic shops.

DC Comics took third place by placing twelve titles in the Top 75. Unfortunately, a whopping eight of DC Comics’ twelve titles are from the Batman franchise. DC Comics continues to struggle to get anyone interested in anything outside of Batman.

Marvel Comics limped into fourth place by putting ten titles in the Top 75. This has to be bruising to Marvel Comics’ big ego. After all, the House of the Mouse thinks they are the biggest baddest comic book publisher on the block. Well, not this month!

Boom rounded out the top five by placing six titles in the Top 75. It is nice to see that Boom continues to assert itself as the most successful of the small indie publishers.

Kodansha Comics and Dark Horse Comics are tied with four titles apiece. I would love to see Kodansha Comics making more of an aggressive move to compete with Viz in the North American market.

Pantheon Books, IDW Publishing, and AWA each had two titles in the Top 75. I am curious to see how IDW Publishing does going forward as it is starting to lose so many licensed properties.

Del Ray Manga, Humanoids Inc., Floating World Comics, and Graphix each placed one title in the Top 75.

Top 100

Image reigned supreme as they took first place with twenty-one titles in the Top 100. This was an improvement over January 2022, where Image took second place with eighteen title. Congrats to Image Comics. The continuing decline of Marvel Comics and DC Comics is allowing Image Comics to take advantage of the moment and have more and more success.

DC Comics took second place with seventeen titles in the Top 100. A stunning thirteen of DC Comics’ seventeen titles were from the Batman franchise.

Viz and Marvel Comics tied for third place as each placed sixteen titles in the Top 100. This makes a second consecutive month that Viz has taken third place and also placed sixteen titles in the Top 100. Viz continues to make inroads into the stronghold of American superhero comic books. Behold the ever-burgeoning power of manga.

Marvel Comics had a disappointing showing in February 2022. Marvel Comics’ sixteen titles in the Top 100 was a far cry from the twenty-nine titles they had in the Top 100 in January 2022.

Boom placed eight titles in the Top 100 which tied what they did in January 2022. Dark Horse Comics had six titles in the Top 100 which was better than their four titles in January 2022. Kodansha Comics placed four titles in the Top 100 which was an improvement over their three titles in January 2022.

IDW Publishing placed three titles in the Top 100 which was an improvement over their two titles in January 2022. Pantheon Books and AWA both ended up with two titles apiece in the Top 100. Del Ray Manga, Humanoids Inc., Floating World Comics, Graphix, and One Press all had one title each in the Top 100.

There are two big takeaways from the ComicHub February 2022 Top 100 Graphic Novels Sales Chart. The first is how far Marvel dropped compared to their success in January 2022. The second is how manga continues to gain more and more ground in local comic book shops. American superhero comics have nowhere left to hide from the oncoming manga tidal wave.

The number one title in February 2022 sold slightly less than the number one title did in January 2022. However, sales did not slip into the 2,000 unit range until the number 9 spot while in January they did so by the number 7 spot. Also, the number 10 title in February 2022 sold slightly better than the number 10 title in January 2022.

The bottom half of the Top 20 Author Graphic Novels sales chart was practically identical to January 2022. The number 11 title in January 2022 sold a few more units than in February. The number 20 title in January 2022 also sold a few more units than in February 2022. Overall, sales for the Top 20 Author Graphic Novels are not that impressive, but they have been consistent.

The Top 10 if the Author Graphic Novels sales chart had a strong presence from the Eastern market. South Korea’s web novel and digital comic Solo Leveling and New Zealand webtoon Lore Olympus combined to take four spots in the Top 6. South Korean webcomic The Abandoned Empress popped into the Top 10, too. All in all, webcomics from South Korea and New Zealand took six spots in the Top 10 Author Graphic Novels sales chart. Again, interest in non-American stories remains quite high.

Yen Press dominated the Top 10 with four titles. Del Rey and Top Shelf tied for second with two titles apiece.

  10. SAPIENS: A GRAPHIC HISTORY VOL. 2: THE PILLARS OF CIVILIZATION (HARPER PERENNIAL) 1,241 units

As we expand out to the Top 20 Author Graphic Novels, we get another South Korean webtoon in The Hellbound. The appetite for foreign comics continues to grow.

Yen Press and Dark Horse Comics tied for first place with each placing four titles in the Top 20. Top Shelf, Image Comics, and Harper Perennial are all tied for third place with two titles apiece.

The Top 20 Author Graphic Novels sales chart remains weak in general. However, the Top 20 Author Graphic Novels are still selling better than the Top 20 Superheroes Graphic Novels.

NPD BookScan February 2022 Top 20 Superheroes Graphic Novels

Top 10

  1. WATCHMEN (2019 EDITION) (DC COMICS) 2,224 units
  2. MOON KNIGHT BY BENDIS & MALEEV: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION (MARVEL COMICS) 2,209 units
  3. BATMAN: YEAR ONE (DC COMICS) 2,129 units
  4. MOON KNIGHT VOL. 1: THE MIDNIGHT MISSION (MARVEL COMICS) 1,534 units
  5. BATMAN/FORTNITE: ZERO POINT HC (DC COMICS) 1,287 units

  9. V FOR VENDETTA (DC COMICS) 1,074 units
  10. BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE DLX. ED. HC (NEW EDITION) (DC COMICS) 995 units

The number one selling Superhero title in January 2022 sold more than the number one selling title in February 2022. Also, sales did not drop into the 1,000 unit range until the number 15 spot in January 2022. While in February 2022, sales dropped out of the 1,000 unit range by the number 10 spot. Sales did not drop into the 700 unit range until the number 18 spot in January 2022. Yet, in February 2022, sales dropped into the 700 range by the number 15 spot. The number 20 title in January 2022 also sold more units than the number 20 title in February 2022.

All in all, there is absolutely nothing positive here in the Top 20 Superheroes Graphic Novels sales chart at all. Superhero comics are the walking dead. And given what DC Comics is about to do this trend does not appear to be ending anytime soon. Marvel Comics and DC Comics seem content on being driven into extinction by the oncoming onslaught of manga.

DC dominated the Top 10 with eight titles. However, a closer look is necessary. Five of the eight DC Comics titles in the Top 10 are all over thirty years old. Five of DC’s eight titles are Batman titles.

Marvel Comics placed just two titles in the Top 10 thanks to some mild interest sparked by the upcoming Moon Knight Disney+ TV show.

What is really concerning about the Top 10 Superheroes Graphic Novels is that Watchmen, Batman Year One, The Sandman, V for Vendetta, Batman The Killing Joke are all over thirty years old. This is what should scare Marvel Comics and DC Comics the most. Fifty percent of the Top 10 titles are over thirty years old. This reaffirms that Marvel Comics and DC Comics are currently publishing comics that nobody is asking for or wants to read. I am unsure how Marvel Comics and DC Comics can look at these numbers and feel confident in their current editorial decisions.

Top 20

  1. THE BATMAN WHO LAUGHS (DC COMICS) 954 units
  2. WATCHMEN: THE DLX. ED. (DC COMICS) 902 units
  3. BATMAN: THREE JOKERS HC (DC COMICS) 890 units
  4. STAR WARS: WAR OF THE BOUNTY HUNTERS (MARVEL COMICS) 801 units
  5. HARLEEN HC (DC COMICS) 783 units
  6. BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS (DC COMICS) 753 units
  7. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND VOL. 1 (MARVEL COMICS) 710 units
  8. BATMAN: HUSH (NEW EDITION) (DC COMICS) 708 units
  9. THE WITCHER OMNIBUS (DARK HORSE COMICS) 705 units
  10. MILESTONE COMPENDIUM ONE (DC COMICS) 704 units

DC Comics dominated the Top 20 with fifteen titles. However, again, there are caveats. Seven of DC Comics’ titles are over thirty years old. Ten of DC Comics’ fifteen titles are over twenty years old. Ten of DC Comics’ fifteen titles come from the Batman franchise.

Marvel Comics limped into second place with just four titles. Marvel Comics added in a volume from Spider-Man and a volume from Star Wars. Dark Horse Comics took third with one title.

Overall, there is nothing positive at all to take away from the Top 20 Superheroes Graphic Novels sales chart. There is not much else to say that we have not already discussed in past sales charts articles. American superhero comics are simply becoming irrelevant.

  3. DEMON SLAYER: KIMETSU NO YAIBA VOL. 1 (VIZ MEDIA) 30,479
  4. DEMON SLAYER: KIMETSU NO YAIBA–STORIES OF WATER AND FLAME (VIZ MEDIA) 29,072

  9. MY HERO ACADEMIA VOL. 1 (VIZ MEDIA) 19,837
  10. JUJUTSU KAISEN VOL. 1 (VIZ MEDIA) 18,407

It was complete and total domination by Viz. Nobody is even coming close to Viz when it comes to manga in the United States. Hopefully, the massive growth and success that manga is enjoying in the United States will prompt other manga publishers to make more of a serious run at competing with Viz. Competition always benefits the consumer.

Sales at the very top were slightly lower in February 2022 compared to January 2022. In January 2022, the number one manga volume sold 56,339 units. However, In January 2022, sales were in the 16,000 unit range by the number 10 spot which is lower than February 2022.

Sales in the bottom half of the Top 20 were slightly higher in February 2022. In January 2022, sales were in the 12,000 unit range by the number 14 spot and in the 11,000 unit range by the number 18 spot. In January 2022, the number 20 title sold 10,356 units. February did better across the board in the bottom half of the Top 20 sales chart.

Chainsaw Man took the top spot and also landed three different volumes in the Top 10. This is an amazing success for Chainsaw Man which does not even have an anime out, yet. We will have to wait until later this year for that. This is a real testament to the popularity of Chainsaw Man. I have been praising this manga since it started so I am glad to see it receiving sales success among the masses.

Demon Slayer dominated by placing four volumes in the Top 10. This is the most by any franchise. This franchise continues to see sustained success after its ending.

Jujutsu Kaisen took third place by putting two volumes in the Top 10. This is another franchise that continues to be popular.

Coming in last place is My Hero Academia with one volume in the Top 10. I love My Hero Academia, but it is awesome to see the Top 20 Manga chart not being dominated by just the My Hero Academia franchise. This speaks to the health and vibrancy of the ever-growing manga industry in the United States.

Top 20

  1. CHAINSAW MAN VOL. 4 (VIZ MEDIA) 16,972
  2. CHAINSAW MAN VOL. 3 (VIZ MEDIA) 16,807
  3. CHAINSAW MAN VOL. 5 (VIZ MEDIA) 14,072
  4. KAIJU NO. 8 VOL. 1 (VIZ MEDIA) 13,612
  5. MY HERO ACADEMIA VOL. 2 (VIZ MEDIA) 13,443
  6. KOMI CAN’T COMMUNICATE VOL. 17 (VIZ MEDIA) 13,198
  7. JUJUTSU KAISEN VOL. 0 (VIZ MEDIA) 12,475
  8. SPY X FAMILY VOL. 1 (VIZ MEDIA) 12,152
  9. ATTACK ON TITAN VOL. 34 (KODANSHA COMICS) 12,107
  10. CHAINSAW MAN VOL. 6 (VIZ MEDIA) 11,043

Chainsaw Man dominated the Top 20 with seven volumes. That is fantastic. I can only imagine how well Chainsaw Man is going to sell once the anime debuts.

Demon Slayer took second place with its four volumes. Jujutsu Kaisen took third place with three volumes in the Top 20.

My Hero Academia took fourth place with two volumes in the Top 20. I love My Hero Academia, but it is awesome to see the Top 20 Manga chart not being dominated by just My Hero Academia. This speaks to the health and vibrancy of the ever-growing manga industry in the United States.

We then have Kaiju No. 8 slotting one title in the Top 20 along with Spy x Family placing one title in the Top 20. These two titles are worth keeping a sharp eye on in the coming months. Spy x Family’s anime debuts on April 9, 2022. I would expect to see manga sales for Spy x Family to take a jump after that point. Kaiju No. 8 continues to make it into the Top 20 despite not having any plans for an anime. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Kaiju No. 8 eventually gets an anime release!

Attack on Titan slots one volume in the Top 20 and has the distinction of being the only title from a company not named Viz. I hope that Kodansha Comics increases their focus in the United States and begins to make a legitimate run against Viz.

The manga tidal wave continues to overwhelm and completely drown out the American superhero comics industry. For the second straight month, the Top 20 Adult Graphic Novels sales chart is identical to the Top 20 Manga sales chart. In fact, the Top 20 Manga sales chart has been identical to the Top 20 Adult Graphic Novels sales chart for three of the past five months. In the other two of the past five months, the Top 20 Manga sales chart was identical to the Top 20 Adult Graphic Novels sales chart with the exception of Lore Olympus vol. 1 HC and paperback.

To highlight the difference between American superhero titles and manga, the best-selling superhero title was Watchmen which sold a mere  2,224 units. The Number 20 selling manga title was Chainsaw Man Vol. 6 with 11,043 units. It is not even close. The gap is so wide that it feels like Marvel Comics and DC Comics are completely out of touch with their readership.

All right, that is it for February 2022. Will manga continue its utter dominance in the Top 20 in March 2022? We will find out!
