Magneto Dark Discovery About Krakoan Resurrection Protocol

The X-Men: From The Ashes has continued to challenge mutants to face the fallout from how the end of the Krakoa era happened. The developments have come fast and furious across all the X-titles. Arguably the biggest development took place in last week’s X-Men #7 as Magneto and Cyclops made a life changing discovery for all mutants. Let’s breakdown what happened and how it could be tied up to the upcoming Charles Xavier event.

MUTANTS SECRETLY SUFFERING FROM RESURRECTION-LINKED DEGENERATIVE SICKNESS

The majority of X-Men #7 focused on the partnership Cyclops and Magneto formed in the From The Ashes direction. We learn it was actual Magneto who approached Scott Summers to reform the X-Men. Though Scott wasn’t necessarily in the place to start up a team again after the fall of Krakoa and Jean Grey protecting the cosmos as Phoenix. It wasn’t until a rogue Sentinel attacked the Alaska town they were in that Scott went hero mode with Magneto to defeat the mutant killing robot.

While this brought the Cyclops back out on Scott it also caused Magneto’s powers to get out of control. Luckily Cyclops was able to knock out Magneto before he caused any damage. After a few months of investigating Magneto revealed to Cyclops that he is suffering Resurrection-Linked Degenerative Sickness, or R-LDS for short. Magneto went on to elaborate that R-LDS is a secret flaw caused by those who went through the Krakoan Resurrection protocol.

From the looks of it Magneto is the first mutant to suffer from R-LDS. Given that Magneto was only resurrected through the Krakoan Resurrection protocol once this creates a lot of questions for what it means for others. Afterall, characters like Cyclops went through the Krakoan Resurrection protocol multiple times. That leaves Cyclops and many of the X-Men as ticking time bombs for them to suffer from R-LDS.

Given that Hope became the Phoenix Force and merged with Jean Grey the Five are no longer around. And with Charles Xavier locked up there is no immediate answer for how to start curing R-LDS. This lays the foundation for what could be a future X-Men event because, as Magneto mentions, it would be extremely dangerous if an Omega-level mutant like Jean Grey or Quentin Quire went out of control. We could see Charles Xavier’s storyline from the Logan movie happen.

CHARLES XAVIER DECISIONS CONTINUE TO HAUNT THE X-MEN

Speaking of Charles Xavier, this development once again highlights how the X-Men are continuing to deal with the ramifications of their former mentor’s decisions. Specifically, it is the secrets that Xavier kept that are haunting all of the X-Men team. On top of the R-LDS development we see over in Uncanny X-Men that Rogue’s team is battling with one of Xavier’s scorned ex-girlfriends.

Xavier’s secrets are something that we will see be dealt with in the upcoming “Raid on Graymalkin” crossover between the X-Men and Uncanny X-Men titles. This upcoming crossover event will be dealing with the question if Xavier is worth saving from his imprisonment in Graymalkin Prison, located in the former Xavier Institute. Given how he left things with all the mutants there will sure to be disagreements between the two X-Men teams on how to deal with Graymalkin Prison.

The things that happen during that crossover will likely bring back up what was learned about Xavier in he second story arc for the Marvel Unlimited exclusive X-Men: From The Ashes series. In that storyline it was revealed that during the Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X that Xavier was doing even more secret stuff. These moves included Xavier using the dead bodies of mercenaries that attacked Krakoa as material to create clones of the Agnew submarine crew to then kill clones rather than the actual crew in order to trick Orchis he was on their side.

This story is something that will clearly be important for the franchise in 2025 as they are collecting this story in a one-shot titled X-Men: Xavier’s Secret release on January 22nd. Adding in what has been revealed about Xavier in the pages of X-Men and Uncanny X-Men we are likely not done with more revelations made about him. This all adds greater interest in how the “Raid on Graymalkin” will impact the franchise’s direction in 2025.
