May 2022 Graphic Novels Sales Charts Including Super Hero Comics and Manga

It is that time of the month when we get to check out the latest graphic novels sales numbers. As always, ICv2 is the best source for these sales numbers. ICv2 released several sales charts for May 2022 including the ComicHub Top 100 Graphic Novels, the Top 20 Author Graphic Novels, Top 20 Superheroes Graphic Novels, Top 20 Manga Graphic Novels, and Top 20 Adult Graphic Novels.

The ComicHub Top 100 Graphic Novels sales chart is based on point-of-sale numbers by the ComicHub system at stores selling American comics around the world. During the period for which these reports were generated, there were over 100 stores using the ComicHub system.

The Top 20 Author Graphic Novels, Top 20 Superheroes Graphic Novels, Top 20 Manga Graphic Novels, and Top 20 Adult Graphic Novels sales charts are all based on NPD BookScan numbers. NPD BookScan collects weekly point-of-sale data on print books from over 16,000 locations through direct reporting from all major retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Target, independent bookstores, and many others. NPD BookScan covers approximately 85% of the U.S. trade print book market.

Top 10

1. Maus Complete Collection (Pantheon Books)

There was no singular publisher who was able to separate themselves from the pack in the Battle for the Top 10. Instead, we had complete parity in the Top 10. Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Boom Studios, and Image Comics each had two titles apiece in the Top 10. Viz Media and Pantheon Books each put one title in the Top 10.

Marvel Comics did slightly better in April 2022, when it placed three titles in the Top 10. DC Comics, Boom Studios, and Image Comics stayed the same in May 2022 as those three publishers all placed two titles in the Top 10 in April 2022. Viz Media also stated the same as they had one title in the Top 10 in April 2022, too.

It is interesting to note that Marvel Comics Top 10 success came on the shoulders of the Moon Knight franchise. This surprising and spectacular sales success of Moon Knight over the past six months continues. You know Marvel Comics is all smiles over the resurrection of the Moon Knight franchise.

Congrats to DC Comics for managing to have their two titles in the Top 10 not be from the Batman franchise! Way to go! Of course, one of the titles is from a comic that is decades old. Having said that, DC Comics does keep benefiting from James Tynion’s Nice House On The Lake. I do not get the appeal of this title. But, I cannot deny the fact that Nice House On The Lake is popular and continues to post good sales rankings. DC Comics has to be thrilled about the success of this title.

Pantheon Comics benefited from the banning of Maus and managed to nab the number one overall spot in the Top 100 rankings. This is just more proof that the dumb banning of books only leads to that book getting more attention and increased sales. The book banning weirdos will never figure this out.

Top 25

Marvel Comics took first place with seven titles in the Top 25. This was better than the five titles that Marvel Comics put in the Top 25 in April 2022. Three of Marvel Comics’ seven titles came from the Moon Knight franchise. What is interesting is that a Ghost Rider collection made it at the number 13 spot. This Ghost Rider collection contains the stories of the real Ghost Rider in Johnny Blaze that was published between 1973 and 1983.

It is telling that older volumes of Marvel’s comic books sell so well compared to newer content. I am unsure what led to this sales surge of Ghost Rider as Marvel Comics is not doing anything with his character at the moment. But, it is still very cool. Gary Friedrich and Mike Ploog did some amazing work with Johnny Blaze during that run.

Boom Studios surprised with a second-place finish by putting five titles in the Top 25. This was exactly the same as what Boom Studios did in April 2022.

Image Comics and DC Comics tied for third place with four titles apiece in the Top 25. This was slightly better than the three titles Image Comics placed in the Top 25 in April 2022. Image benefited from a wide range of titles.

However, it was slightly worse for DC Comics compared to the five titles they had in the Top 25 in April 2022. Two of DC Comics’ four titles were Bruce Wayne titles.

Viz Media took fifth place with two titles in the Top 25. This was a decrease from April 2022 when Viz Media put five titles in the Top 25. Still, it is not bad to see a manga publisher just two titles behind DC Comics in local comic shops. Kodansha Comics, Pantheon Books, and Graphix all had one title apiece.

Top 50

Marvel Comics took first place with fourteen titles in the Top 50. This was a nice improvement over the eleven titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 50 in April 2022. Marvel’s first-place finish came on the backs of a wide range of franchises.

DC Comics took second place with eleven titles in the Top 50. This was down slightly from the twelve titles DC Comics had in the Top 50 in April 2022. Eight of DC Comics’ eleven titles were Bruce Wayne titles. No other Batman family character title made it into the Top 50. This remains a real issue for DC Comics. They truly have become the Bruce Wayne Comics company and that is about it.

Image Comics took third place with nine titles in the Top 50. This was slightly better than the eight titles Image Comics had in April 2022. Boom Studios fell back to fourth place with six titles in the Top 50. This was down slightly from the seven titles Book Studios had in the Top 50 in April 2022.

Viz Media claimed fifth place with five titles in the Top 50. This was down from Viz Media’s seven titles in the Top 50 in April 2022. Still, this is pretty impressive considering Viz Media is competing in the protected backyard of American comic books known as local comic shops.

Graphix took sixth place with two titles. Kodansha Comics, Pantheon Books, and Dark Horse Comics all had one title apiece.

DC Comics surged forward to take first place with nineteen titles in the Top 75. This was down from the twenty-one titles that DC Comics had in the Top 75 in April 2022. Nine of the nineteen titles are Bruce Wayne titles. We still do not see any other members of the Batman family making an appearance in the sales chart.

Marvel Comics took second place with eighteen titles. This was a big improvement over the eleven titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 75 in April 2022. It was surprising to see Spirits of Vengeance Rise of Midnight Sons sneak into the Top 75. It is always fun to see surprising titles pop into the Top 100.

Image Comics grabbed third place with fourteen titles in the Top 75. This was up slightly from the twelve titles Image Comics had in April 2022. Viz Media took fourth place with eight titles in the Top 75. This was down from the fifteen titles that Viz Media had in April 2022. You know, Viz Media really did go off in April 2022.

Boom Studios came in at fifth place with seven titles. This is exactly the same as what Boom Studios did in April 2022. Seven Seas Entertainment, Graphix, and Dark Horse Comics all tied for eighth place with two titles each.

Kodansha Comics, Pantheon Books, and Random House had one title apiece.

Marvel Comics ended up winning the Top 100 with twenty-five titles. This was a big improvement over the sixteen titles that Marvel Comics put in the Top 100 in April 2022.

In the end, DC Comics just could not fend off their neighborhood bully. DC Comics came in second place with twenty-one titles. This was down considerably from the twenty-eight tiles that DC Comics put in the Top 100 in April 2022. Ten of DC Comics’ twenty-one titles were Bruce Wayne titles. No other Batman family character made the Top 100. Incredible. Bruce Wayne accounted for nearly 50% of all of the DC Comics titles in the Top 100. That is not good for long-term health.

Image Comics took third place with eighteen titles. This was up slightly from the sixteen titles Image Comics had in the Top 100 in April 2022.

Viz Media snatched fourth place with twelve titles. This was down from the twenty titles that Viz Media posted in a monster Top 100 result in April 2022. Still, this is a solid finish for the manga publisher in local comic shops.

Boom Studios ended in fifth place with eight titles in the Top 100. This was up slightly from the seven titles Boom Studios had in the Top 100 in April 2022.

Graphix had four titles in the Top 100. Dark Horse Comics and IDW Publishing had three titles each in the Top 100. Seven Seas Entertainment had two titles in the Top 100. Kodansha Comics, Del Ray Manga, Pantheon Books, and Random House had one title apiece.

The power of webtoons is single-handedly breathing new life into the Top 20 Author Graphic Novels. It is a striking occurrence. Solo Leveling led the way for this new power surge by webtoons. The South Korean webtoon dominated the Top 20 Author Graphic Novels sales chart. Solo Leveling grabbed the top two overall spots, three of the top four spots, and four of the top six spots. Amazing. Seriously.

Another Eastern webtoon, Lore Olympus, put one volume in the Top 5 and two volumes in the Top 10. This means that Eastern webtoons dominated everyone by taking the top four overall spots and by placing six volumes in the Top 10.

Yen Press took first place with four volumes in the Top 10. Del Rey took second place with two volumes in the Top 10. One Press, Frayed Pages, Top Shelf, and Avon all tied for last place with one volume apiece.

The sales for the number 1 spot in May 2022 blew away the sales for the number 1 spot in April 2022 (7,065 units). Of course, the only volume that really posted a big sales number in May 2022 was Solo Leveling Vol. 4. After the number one spot, sales numbers drop precipitously.

In April 2022, unit sales dipped below the 5,000 unit mark by the number 3 spot. In May 2022, unit sales were below the 5,000 unit mark by the number 6 spot. In April 2022, unit sales fell below the 3,000 mark by the number 7 spot. In May 2022, unit sales dropped below the 3,000 mark by the number 10 spot.

The unit sales for the bottom half of the Top 20 are unimpressive. Unit sales drop below the 2,000 unit mark by the number 14 spot. Sales were up slightly from April 2022 when sales we below the 2,000 mark by the number 11 spot. Having said that, the unit sales for the number 20 spot in April 2022 were almost identical to the unit sales for the number 20 spot in May 2022.

Yen Press and Image Comics tied for first place with four volumes apiece. Image’s success was powered by Invincible which accounted for three of Image Comics’ four volumes in the Top 20.

Del Rey, Top Shelf, and Mariner Books had two volumes apiece in the Top 20. One Press, Frayed Pages, Avon, Andrew McMeel, Abrams, and Harper all tied for last place with one volume apiece.

DC Comics stormed to first place by placing six titles in the Top 10. Of course, three of the six titles were Bruce Wayne titles. Two were Sandman titles and one was Watchmen. All of them are old. Naturally. Because DC Comics cannot get anyone excited about anything they have published in the past five years.

Marvel Comics slumped to second place with just three titles in the Top 10. Again, it is the Moon Knight franchise that powered Marvel Comics as two of the three titles were from Moon Knight. I know I have said this over and over. But, it truly bears repeating. The Moon Knight Disney+ show may be the first time we have ever seen anything from the MCU have a tangible impact on the comic books. This continues to be amazing.

Viz Media rounded out the Top 10 by placing a Star Wars licensed manga in the Top 10. I am sure Marvel Comics was really thrilled that Mama Disney licensed out Star Wars to a competitor.

Sales for American superhero titles continue to be dreadful. Having said that, the number 1 spot managed to crack 4,000 units. That is something that could not be achieved in April 2022. However, The Top 10 Superheroes Graphic Novels for April 2022 and May 2022 were largely identical.

In April 2022, sales dipped under the 3,000 unit mark by the number 2 spot. In May 2022, sales dipped under the 3,000 unit mark by the number 3 spot. In April 2022, sales dropped below the 2,000 mark by the number 5 spot. In May 2022, sales dropped below the 2,000 mark by the number 6 spot.

Top 20

DC Comics completely obliterated Marvel Comics by taking first place with fourteen titles in the Top 20. Of course, eight of the fourteen titles were Bruce Wayne titles. That is a whopping 57% of DC’s titles in the Top 20. Nine of the fourteen titles were Batman family titles. That is a massive 64% of DC’s titles in the Top 20. And, of course, almost everything is an older comic.

Marvel Comics limped into second place with a measly five titles in the Top 20. Moon Knight accounted for three of Marvel Comics’ five titles. Viz took third place with their one title.

Sales in the bottom half of the Top 20 Superheroes Graphic Novels were awful. In April 2022, unit sales never dropped below the 1,000 mark. The number 11 title sold 1,434 units. The number 20 title sold 1,013 units. However, in May 2022, sales dropped below the 1,000 mark by the number 14 spot. That is hideous. DC Comics and Marvel Comics should be embarrassed. The title in the number 20 spot sold a meager 765 units.

Things continue to trend downward for American superhero graphic novels. There is nothing positive to take away from this chart and nothing that points to a positive outlook in the future.

In April 2022, the number one title sold 65,657 units. In May 2022, the number one title sold decidedly less at 38,164 units. In April 2022, sales did not drop below the 30,000 unit mark until the number 5 spot. In May 2022, sales dropped below the 30,000 unit mark with the number 2 spot. In April 2022, sales slipped below the 20,000 unit mark with the number 9 spot. In May 2022, sales went below the 20,000 unit mark with the number 3 spot.

April 2022 was a massive month as the Spy x Family anime debut supercharged sales for the volumes of Spy x Family. Also, Chainsaw Man Vol. 10 posted a ridiculously high number, too. May 2022 saw the manga market come back to Earth.

Spy x Family took first place with five volumes in the Top 10. This is another impressive showing by Spy x Family which is really benefiting from the anime. I adore this manga so I love seeing it have all the success that it so richly deserves.

Outside of Spy x Family, no other franchise had more than one volume in the Top 10. Viz Media cruised to a first-place finish by placing eight volumes in the Top 10. Yen Press and Darkhorse Comics had one volume apiece.

In both April 2022 and May 2022, sales never dropped below the 10,000 unit mark. However, In April 2022, the volume at the number 11 spot sold 17,330 units compared to May 2022 when the number 11 spot sold 13,765 units. In April 2022, the volume in the number 20 spot sold 11,594 units compared to May 2022 when the number 20 spot sold 10,747 units.

Spy x Family won the battle for the Top 20 with six volumes. Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun came in second place with three volumes in the Top 20. My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer tied for third place with two volumes apiece.

Viz Media ruled the Top 20 with fourteen volumes. Yen Press took second place with three volumes. Darkhorse Comics, Square Enix, and Kodansha Comics had one volume apiece.

It is unfortunate that Viz Media still has absolutely zero competition. Consumers really need the other big manga heavyweight in Kodansha Comics to seriously step up their game in the North American market.

Manga’s four-month streak of taking all twenty spots on the Top 20 Adult Graphic Novels chart came to an end in May 2022. But, barely. Manga dominated everyone and grabbed nineteen of the twenty spots. The only non-manga title in the Top 20 Graphic Novels chart was the South Korean webtoon, Solo Leveling.

The number-one-selling superhero graphic novel in May 2022 was The Sandman Book One and it only sold 4,514 units. That is nowhere even close to the number twenty selling manga volume with 10,881 units. The gap is so massive and it seems that Marvel Comics and DC Comics have no chance of narrowing this ever-growing gap.

All right, that is it for May 2022. Will manga continue its utter dominance in the Top 20 in June 2022? We will find out!
