May 2024 Comic Book Sales Rankings

May 2024 Comic Book Sales Rankings

It is time to check out the May 2024 comic book sales rankings. Things are getting murkier in terms of actual unit numbers. So, we will have to settle with going to ICv2 for their Top 200 sales rankings. It is not as good as actual unit numbers, but we have to work with what we get.

Keep in mind, that the Top 200 single-issue comic sales charts are based on orders tracked by the ComicHub system at local comic book shops selling American comics. This includes over 3,000 stores selling American comics worldwide. As always, it is important to remember that these rankings are also not actual sales. These rankings only represent the number of units ordered by local comic shops.

You can go over to ICv2 and check out the Top 50 for the May 2024 Comic Book Sales Rankings for free or opt for a pro membership (It is well worth the money) and get the Top 200 for May 2024 Comic Book Sales Rankings and then come back here for a detailed analysis of the May 2024 Comic Book Sales Rankings!

May 2024 Top 200 Comic Book Sales Rankings

The Battle for the Top 10

Marvel Comics placed eight comics in the Top 10. Month-over-month sales were down from the nine comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 10 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics had six comics in the Top 10 in May 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Marvel Comics had seven comics in the Top 10 in May 2022.

Marvel Comics continues to draw upon Peter Parker to power its Top 10 success. Three of Marvel Comics’ eight comics in the Top 10 were Peter Parker titles. Three of Marvel Comics’ eight comics were from the X-Men franchise. The other two titles were Doom #1 and Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #1. That is an excellent cross-section of franchises which shows how Marvel Comics does not have to rely on just one character or franchise to power their sales success.

DC Comics placed one comic in the Top 10. Month-over-month sales were up from the zero comics that DC Comics had in the Top 10 in April 2024. However, year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had four comics in the Top 10 in May 2023. Numbers were also down from two years ago as DC Comics had two comics in the Top 10 in May 2022.

Naturally, DC Comics’ lone Top 10 title was Bruce Wayne’s Batman title.

Image Comics placed one comic in the Top 10. Month-over-month sales were flat from the one comic that Image Comics had in the Top 10 in April 2024. However, year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had zero comics in the Top 10 in May 2023. Numbers were flat from two years ago as Image Comics had one comic in the Top 10 in May 2022.

The Battle for the Top 25

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 11-25 range typically sell in the 65,000 to 50,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed nineteen comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were up from the seventeen comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 25 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics had seventeen comics in the Top 25 in May 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Marvel Comics had thirteen comics in the Top 25 in May 2022.

DC Comics placed three comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were flat from the three comics that DC Comics had in the Top 25 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had seven comics in the Top 25 in May 2023. Numbers were down from two years ago as DC Comics had seven comics in the Top 25 in May 2022.

This is alarming. DC Comics is down by a wide margin in the Top 25 compared to one year ago and two years ago. I am stunned. Two years ago, I was convinced that DC Comics was at rock bottom. Amazingly, things have gotten even worse as Dawn of DC completely failed.

Image Comics placed three comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were flat from the three comics that Image Comics had in the Top 25 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had one comic in the Top 25 in May 2023. Numbers were flat from two years ago as Image Comics had three comics in the Top 25 in May 2022.

All of Image Comics’ Top 25 comics came from the Hasbro franchise. This lucrative license continues to be a massive boon to Image Comics. Without the Hasbro license, Image Comics would have not been in the Top 25 at all. What is also impressive is that Image Comics tied DC Comics in the Top 25. This underscores how increasingly irrelevant DC Comics has become in the Top 25.

The Battle for the Top 50

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 26-50 range typically sell in the 49,000 to 30,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed thirty-three comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were up from the thirty-one comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 50 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics had thirty-three comics in the Top 50 in May 2023. However, numbers were up from two years ago as Marvel Comics had twenty-nine comics in the Top 50 in May 2022.

Daredevil #9 ticked up from the number 36 spot to the number 31 spot. While Daredevil is no longer a selling at the level it had been in prior years, at least we get positive signs with two straight months of increases in the sales rankings.

Doctor Strange #15 took the number 39 spot. This is a nice rebound for this title as it was out of the Top 50 for the past two issues.

Fantastic Four #20 ticked up from the number 42 spot to the number 41 spot. This title continues to be a rock solid Top 50 title every month.

DC Comics placed seven comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were down from the nine comics that DC Comics had in the Top 50 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were also down as DC Comics had fifteen comics in the Top 50 in May 2023. Numbers were also down from two years ago as DC Comics had ten comics in the Top 50 in May 2022.

The nightmare continues. DC Comics is down by a wide margin in the Top 50 compared to a year ago and two years ago. I honestly did not think this was possible. Everything DC Comics has done has blown up in their faces. This level of mismanagement over the years necessitates many changes in leadership and throughout the editorial staff.

Image Comics placed seven comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were up from the six comics that Image Comics had in the Top 50 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had one comic in the Top 50 in May 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Image Comics had six comics in the Top 50 in May 2022.

Four of Image Comics’ seven comics in the Top 50 were from the Hasbro franchise. Three of Image Comics’ seven comics were from the Ghost Machine label. Without the Hasbro license and Ghost Machine imprint, Image Comics would have had zero comics in the Top 50. This shows how valuable these mainstream comics are to Image Comics’ continued sales success.

Also, it is amazing to see Image Comics tying DC Comics in the Top 50. Again, this underscores emphatically how far DC Comics has fallen over the years.

Dynamite Entertainment placed one comic in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were down from the two comics that Dynamite Entertainment had in the Top 50 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as Dynamite Entertainment had zero comics in the Top 50 in May 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Dynamite Entertainment had zero comics in the Top 50 in May 2022.

ThunderCats #4 fell from the number 22 spot to the number 47 spot. It is still amazing that this title is in the Top 50 by the fourth issue. I did not think that this title would still be in the Top 50 at this point. ThunderCats Ho, indeed!

IDW Publishing placed one comic in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were flat from the one comic that IDW Publishing had in the Top 50 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as IDW Publishing had zero comics in the Top 50 in May 2023. Numbers were flat from two years ago as IDW Publishing had one comic in the Top 50 in May 2022.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black White & Green #1 debuted at the number 38 spot. This is a solid start for this new TMNT title. IDW Publishing continues to have nothing going on outside of this valuable license.

BOOM! Studios placed one comic in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were flat from the one comic that BOOM! Studios had in the Top 50 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were also flat as BOOM! Studios had one comic in the Top 50 in May 2023. Numbers were down by a wide margin from two years ago as BOOM! Studios had four comics in the Top 50 in May 2022.

The Battle for the Top 75

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 51-75 range typically sell in the 29,000 to 25,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed forty-six comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were down from the forty-nine comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 75 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics had forty-six comics in the Top 75 in May 2023. However, numbers were up from two years ago as Marvel Comics had thirty-seven comics in the Top 75 in May 2022.

DC Comics placed thirteen comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were up from the twelve comics that DC Comics had in the Top 75 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were down by a wide margin as DC Comics had twenty-one comics in the Top 75 in May 2023. Numbers were also down from two years ago as DC Comics had seventeen comics in the Top 75 in May 2022.

The sales chart just keeps getting more and more brutal for DC Comics. There was a temporary bump from the Dawn of DC initiative titles a year ago. However, readers were unimpressed with what DC Comics offered with Dawn of DC and quickly abandoned those titles. This led DC Comics to where they are this month. The fact that DC Comics is selling worse in the Top 75 than two years ago when we all thought DC Comics was dying is particularly distressing.

Image Comics placed eleven comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were up from the eight comics that Image Comics had in the Top 75 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up by a wide margin as Image Comics had five comics in the Top 75 in May 2023. However, numbers were down from two years ago as Image Comics had thirteen comics in the Top 75 in May 2022.

Nine of Image Comics’ eleven comics in the Top 75 were from the Hasbro franchise, Ghost Machine label, and the Spawn franchise. Just two of the eleven came from Image Comics’ niche titles.

GI Joe A Real American Hero #306 climbed from the number 78 spot to the number 54 spot. This title continues to lag behind in the sales rankings compared to the other GI Joe related titles. Having said that, this is still a great sales ranking and far better than this title ever did under IDW Publishing’s control.

Spawn #353 dipped from the number 64 spot to the number 66 spot. This title continues to hover in the 60s every month.

Dynamite Entertainment placed one comic in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were down from the two comics that Dynamite Entertainment had in the Top 75 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Dynamite Entertainment had one comic in the Top 75 in May 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Dynamite Entertainment had zero comics in the Top 75 in May 2022.

IDW Publishing placed two comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were flat from the two comics that IDW Publishing had in the Top 75 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as IDW Publishing had one comic in the Top 75 in May 2023. Numbers were flat from two years ago as IDW Publishing had two comics in the Top 75 in May 2022.

BOOM! Studios placed one comic in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were flat from the one comic that BOOM! Studios had in the Top 75 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were also flat as BOOM! Studios had one comic in the Top 75 in May 2023. Numbers were down by a wide margin from two years ago as BOOM! Studios had five comics in the Top 75 in May 2022.

Titan Comics placed one comic in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were up from the zero comics that Titan Comics had in the Top 75 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as Titan Comics had zero comics in the Top 75 in May 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Titan Comics had zero comics in the Top 75 in May 2022.

Gun Honey Collision Course #1 debuted at the number 51 spot. This is another impressive showing for Gun Honey which continues to have surprising success for such a small publisher. There is no doubt that sales were boosted by the incredible alternate covers that shipped with this issue. It is almost impossible to pick a favorite cover!

The Battle for the Top 100

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 76-100 range typically sell in the 24,000 to 18,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed fifty-nine comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were down from the sixty-one comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 100 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were also down as Marvel Comics had sixty-one comics in the Top 100 in May 2023. However, numbers were up from two years ago as Marvel Comics had forty-six comics in the Top 100 in May 2022.

DC Comics placed sixteen comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were down from the twenty comics that DC Comics had in the Top 100 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were down by a wide margin as DC Comics had thirty comics in the Top 100 in May 2023. Numbers were also considerably down from two years ago as DC Comics had twenty-nine comics in the Top 100 in May 2022.

Image Comics placed sixteen comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were up/down/flat from the nine comics that Image Comics had in the Top 100 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up/down/flat as Image Comics had five comics in the Top 100 in May 2023. Numbers were up/down/flat from two years ago as Image Comics had fifteen comics in the Top 100 in May 2022.

Thirteen of Image Comics’ sixteen comics in the Top 100 were from the Hasbro franchise, Ghost Machine label, Spawn franchise, and the Universal Monsters franchise. Just three of the thirteen comics came from Image Comics’ niche titles. This shows how valuable these licenses and franchises have become for Image Comics going forward. It also has allowed Image Comics to become a legitimate threat to DC Comics in the sales chart.

Universal Monsters the Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives #2 dropped like a rock falling from the number 16 spot to the number 78 spot. It looks like this four-issue mini-series will struggle to conclude in the Top 100.

IDW Publishing placed three comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were up from the two comics that IDW Publishing had in the Top 100 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were also up as IDW Publishing had two comics in the Top 100 in May 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as IDW Publishing had two comics in the Top 100 in May 2022.

Dynamite Entertainment placed two comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were flat from the two comics that Dynamite Entertainment had in the Top 100 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as Dynamite Entertainment had one comic in the Top 100 in May 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Dynamite Entertainment had zero comics in the Top 100 in May 2022.

After Space Ghost #1 debuted at the number 13 spot in April 2024, the resolicitation for Space Ghost #1 grabbed the number 96 spot. Amazingly, this issue was able to crack into the Top 100 with a resolicited issue! That is an impressive feat that does not happen often. I love Space Ghost, but I was not expecting any of this type of success in April or May. I am curious to see how Space Ghost #2 performs when it ships in June.

Titan Comics had two comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were up from the one comic that Titan Comics had in the Top 100 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were also up as Titan Comics had zero comics in the Top 100 in May 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Titan Comics had zero comics in the Top 100 in May 2022.

Conan the Barbarian #11 fell from the number 82 spot to the number 92 spot. Incredibly, this title is still in the Top 100 after almost a year. This is the best-selling Conan title that we have seen in a while. Titan Comics continues to cook!

BOOM! Studios placed one comic in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were down from the two comics that BOOM! Studios had in the Top 100 in April 2024. Year-over-year numbers were flat as BOOM! Studios had one comic in the Top 100 in May 2023. Numbers were down by a huge amount from two years ago as BOOM! Studios had seven comics in the Top 100 in May 2022.

DSTLRY placed one comic in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were flat from the one comic that DSTLRY had in the Top 100 in April 2024. However, year-over-year numbers increased as DSTLRY had zero comics in the Top 100 in May 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as DSTLRY had zero comics in the Top 100 in May 2022.

The Joshua Williamson Award For The Writer With The Most Comics In The Top 50

There were a whopping eight writers with two comics in the Top 50.

Victor LaVelle had two comics with Wolverine #49 at the number 9 spot and Wolverine #50 at the number 23 spot.

Al Ewing had two comics with Venom #33 at the number 24 spot and Immortal Thor #11 at the number 33 spot.

Zeb Wells had two comics with Amazing Spider-Man #49 at the number 3 spot and Amazing Spider-Man #50 at the number 6 spot.

Chip Zdarsky had two comics with Batman #147 at the number 7 spot and Avengers: Twilight #6 at the number 29 spot.

Declan Shalvey had two comics with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black, White, and Green #1 at the number 38 spot and ThunderCats #4 at the number 47 spot.

Robert Kirkman had two comics with Energon Universe 2024 Special #1 at the number 21 spot and Void Rivals #9 at the number 32 spot.

Daniel Warren Johnson had two comics with Transformers #8 at the number 4 spot and 21 Energon Universe 2024 Special #1 at the number 21 spot.

Jonathan Hickman had two comics with Doom #1 at the number 1 spot and Ultimate Spider-Man #5 at the number 2 spot. I just want to take a moment to point out how insane this accomplishment was in May 2024. Yeah, Hickman only had two comics in the Top 50. But, Hickman had the number 1 spot and the number 2 spot. That is off the charts crazy! I do not know the last time a writer scored the Top 2 spots in the comic book rankings. What an achievement.

Three writers had three comics in the Top 50 in May 2024.

Kieron Gillen had three comics with X-Men Forever #3 at the number 20 spot, Rise of the Powers of X #5 at the number 27 spot, and X-Men Forever #4 at the number 30 spot.

Benjamin Percy had three comics with Hellverine #1 at the number 8 spot, Wolverine #49 at the number 9 spot, and Wolverine #50 at the number 23 spot.

Uh, oh! Look who is back! Straight out of one of Bendis’ nightmares, it is the old sales monster for DC Comics! Geoff Johns is back with his Ghost Machine titles. Geoff Johns had three comics with Geiger #2 at the number 35 spot, Rook Exodus #2 at the number 40 spot, and Redcoat #2 at the number 44 spot.

One writer had four comics in the Top 50 in Mary 2024. The man the award is named after, Joshua Williamson, had four comics with Cobra Commander #5 at the number 18 spot, Energon Universe 2024 Special #1 at the number 21 spot, Action Comics #1065 at the number 22 spot, and Superman #14 at the number 34 spot.

But, in a stunning move, there was one writer who managed to best Joshua Williamson. That would be Jed MacKay who had five comics in the Top 50 with Blood Hunt: Red Band #2 at the number 11 spot, Blood Hunt #2 at the number 14 spot, Avengers #14 at the number 19 spot, Blood Hunt #1 at the number 28 spot, and Doctor Strange #15 at the number 39 spot.

Therefore, the winner of the Joshua Williamson Award for May 2024 is…Jed MacKay!

Battle of the Franchises

The X-Men franchise took first place with three comics in the Top 10, eight comics in the Top 25, and eleven comics in the Top 50.

The Spider-Man franchise took second place with four comics in the Top 10, six comics in the Top 25, and eight comics in the Top 50.

The Ultimate Universe took third place with two comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50.

The Hasbro franchise took fourth place with one comic in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50.

The Batman franchise took fifth place with one comic in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50.

Big Events

Blood Hunt

11 Blood Hunt: Red Band #2

14 Blood Hunt #2

26 Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt #1

28 Blood Hunt #1 (Bloodhunt)

45 Blood Hunters #1 (Of 4)

49 Dracula: Blood Hunt #1 (Of 3)

57 Strange Academy: Blood Hunt #1

69 Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt #1

81 Black Panther: Blood Hunt #1

88 Union Jack the Ripper: Blood Hunt #1

121 Blood Hunt: Red Band #1 (Bloodhunt) (Resolicitation)

Blood Hunt placed zero comics in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and six comics in the Top 50.

Blood Hunt #1 took the number 28 spot. Blood Hunt #1 was also improperly included in the April 2024 sales rankings where it took the number 6 spot. If all of the sales from Blood Hunt #1 had been properly allocated to the May 2024 sales ranking then this issue would have certainly scored the number 1 or 2 spot in May 2024.

Blood Hunt #2 took the number 14 spot. This is a great sales ranking considering that this Big Event shipped two issues in one month. The second issue always comes in a little bit lower.

Blood Hunt: Red Band #2 took the number 11 spot.

Blood Hunters #1 had a poor debut coming in at the number 45 spot. This is not a real surprise. Blood Hunters is an anthology-style comic and those rarely sell well. Plus, it is saddled with some writers like Erica Schultz and Mark Russell who have never had any sales success. I would expect this four-issue mini-series to conclude outside of the Top 100.

Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt #1 failed to make the Top 25 and took the number 26 spot. This is unusually low for a title with the “Amazing Spider-Man” brand on the cover and starring Peter Parker. Normally, an issue like this would be a lock for the Top 10. But, the writer is Justina Ireland. Ireland is a YA novelist and not a mainstream comic book writer. I would expect this three-issue mini-series to conclude outside of the Top 50.

Dracula: Blood Hunt #1 had a terrible debut barely making the Top 50 by taking the number 49 spot. This is also no surprise given that the writer is Danny Lore. Lore has never had any sales success, either. This three-issue mini-series is a lock to finish outside the Top 75 and possibly even the Top 100 given the bad debut number.

Strange Academy: Blood Hunt #1 also had a bad debut slotting in at the number 57 spot. Again, this is not a surprise. Daniel José Older is the writer. Older is a YA fiction writer and not a mainstream comic book writer. This type of hire always fails. This three-issue mini-series looks to have a good chance of concluding outside the Top 100.

Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt #1 had an awful debut at the number 69 spot. Bryan Hill is the writer for this title. Hill has only ever found any sales success with Ultimate Black Panther. So, I am not surprised that one of his comics would perform poorly in the rankings. I would expect this three-issue mini-series to conclude outside of the Top 100.

Black Panther: Blood Hunt #1 had a horrendous debut at the number 81 spot. Cheryl Lynn Eaton is the writer. If you have never heard of Eaton then you are not alone. I had not either until this moment. Eaton is a self-described “pop-culture pundit and marketing strategist.” What I do know that she is not is a mainstream superhero comic book writer who should be working for the biggest superhero comic book publisher in America. Again, hiring some random person to write a comic starring a high-profile superhero is a total sales failure. This three-issue mini-series is certain to finish outside of the Top 100.

Union Jack the Ripper: Blood Hunt #1 had a brutal debut at the number 88 spot. Cavan Scott is the writer. Scott is one of the writers who gave us the sales failure known as Star Wars: The High Republic. Scott is more a novelist and magazine/newspaper columnist than a mainstream superhero comic book writer. This three-issue mini-series is a lock to finish outside of the Top 100.

It is fascinating to see how much success the main Blood Hunt title enjoys compared to the lack of success of the tie-in titles. The writers for these Blood Hunt tie-in titles are a collective dumpster fire. I am mystified at what standards Marvel Comics employs in hiring writers for their titles.

Fall of the House of X

12 Fall of the House of X #5

27 Rise of the Powers of X #5

167 Rise of the Powers of X #4 (Resolicitation)

Fall of the House of X placed zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50.

House of Brainiac

34 Superman #14

119 Power Girl #9

143 Superman House of Brainiac Special #1 (One-Shot) (Resolicitation)

House of Brainiac placed zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50.

Hasbro Franchise

4 Transformers #8

18 Cobra Commander #5 (Of 5)

21 Energon Universe 2024 Special #1 (One-Shot)

32 Void Rivals #9

54 GI Joe A Real American Hero #306

169 Transformers #7 (Resolicitation)

172 Transformers #6 (Resolicitation)

200 Duke #5 (Of 5) (Resolicitation)

The Hasbro franchise had one comic in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50. This was better than April 2024 when the Hasbro franchise had one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50.

Transformers #8 dipped from the number 3 spot to the number 4 spot. This title remains a sales monster.

Energon Universe 2024 Special #1 grabbed the number 21 spot. This was a nice result for this one-shot issue.

Void Rivals #9 rocketed up from the number 108 spot to the number 32 spot. Wow! This is as high as we have seen Void Rivals in quite some time.

Cobra Commander #5 dipped from the number 12 spot to the number 18 spot. With this issue, this five-issue mini-series has concluded. Cobra Commander was another sales hit for Image Comics.

GI Joe A Real American Hero #306 climbed from the number 78 spot to the number 54 spot. This title almost managed to break back into the Top 50. It will be interesting to see if this momentum can be carried into the next month.

Spawn Franchise

66 Spawn #353

76 Gunslinger Spawn #31

79 Spawn: Monolith #1 (Of 3)

84 Spawn Rat City #2

104 Spawn Scorched #29

128 Sam and Twitch Case Files #3

140 King Spawn #34

180 King Spawn #33 (Resolicitation)

198 Spawn Rat City #1 (Resolicitation)

The Spawn franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and zero comics in the Top 50. This was worse than in April 2024 when the Spawn franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50.

Spawn #353 dipped from the number 64 spot to the number 66 spot. This title continues to reliably sell in the 60s each month.

Gunslinger Spawn #31 climbed from the number 87 spot to the number 76 spot.

Spawn: Monolith #1 had a disappointing debut coming in at the number 79 spot. This three-issue mini-series is going to struggle to conclude inside the Top 100.

Spawn Rat City #2 plummeted from the number 50 spot to the number 84 spot. I expected this to happen. Erica Schultz has never enjoyed any sales success before and I was not expecting this title to change that trend.

Spawn Scorched #29 ticked up from the number 109 spot to the number 104 spot. I dig this title so I am glad it has enjoyed two straight months of climbing up in the rankings. We shall see if Spawn Scorched can manage to claw back into the Top 100 next month.

Sam and Twitch Case Files #3 fell from the number 122 spot to the number 128 spot. This is the third straight month this title has fallen in the rankings. It does appear that this title’s descent is beginning to arrest. So, perhaps it will find its happy place in the rankings next month.

King Spawn #34 ticked down from the number 137 spot to the number 140 spot. This is about where we expect to see this title.

Ghost Machine Titles

35 Geiger #2

40 Rook Exodus #2

44 Redcoat #2

186 Rook Exodus #1 (Resolicitation)

Ghost Machine had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50. This was better than April 2024 when Ghost Machine had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and zero comics in the Top 50.

This is the first month that Geoff Johns’ titles had all of their sales numbers properly included in the month that they shipped. Going forward, we will be able to better judge how these titles are faring in the sales rankings. It is certainly a positive sign that all three titles are in the Top 50. We shall see if that can continue going forward or if they end up cooling off quickly.

Star Wars Franchise

43 Star Wars: Darth Vader #46

73 Star Wars #46

75 Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red #2 L

86 Star Wars: The High Republic (Phase III) #7

93 Star Wars: Mace Windu #4

122 Star Wars: Jango Fett #3

125 Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red #1 (Resolicitation)

188 Star Wars Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special #1 (Resolicitation)

The Star Wars franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and zero comics in the Top 50. This was worse than in April 2024 when the Star Wars franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were also down as the Star Wars franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50 in May 2023.

Numbers were down from two years ago as the Star Wars franchise had one comic in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50 in May 2022.

Star Wars: Darth Vader #46 dropped from the number 39 spot to the number 43 spot. This is not unusual as this title constantly floats between the 30s and 50s in the sales rankings.

Star Wars #46 fell from the number 51 spot to the number 73 spot. This erased two consecutive months of making gains in the sales rankings.

Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red #2 crashed and burned as it dropped from the number 19 spot to the number 75 spot. Welp. So much for my prediction last month that this four-issue mini-series had a chance of concluding in the Top 50! It now looks like this mini-series will struggle to conclude in the Top 100.

Star Wars: The High Republic (Phase III) #7 bounced up from the number 95 spot to the number 86 spot. While this is still not a great ranking, it is at least two straight months that this title has climbed up in the rankings.

Star Wars: Mace Windu #4 fell from the number 84 spot to the number 93 spot. With this issue, this four-issue mini-series has finished. Star Wars: Mace Windu just barely managed to conclude in the Top 100. This mini-series was another sales disappointment for the Star Wars franchise.

Star Wars: Jango Fett continued its freefall in the sales rankings as Star Wars: Jango Fett #3 plummeted from the number 86 spot to the number 122 spot. It does look like I am going to get this prediction correct that this title would conclude outside of the Top 100. This four-issue mini-series has been a dreadful sales failure for the Star Wars franchise.

Spider-Man Franchise

3 Amazing Spider-Man #49 (Blood Hunt)

6 Amazing Spider-Man #50

10 Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #1

110 Amazing Spider-Man #48 (Resolicitation)

133 Jackpot & Black Cat #3

147 Ultimate Spider-Man #1 (Resolicitation)

199 Amazing Spider-Man #47 (Resolicitation)

The Spider-Man franchise had four comics in the Top 10, six comics in the Top 25, and eight comics in the Top 50. This was the same as in April 2024 when the Spider-Man franchise had three comics in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down by a large margin as the Spider-Man franchise had four comics in the Top 10, nine comics in the Top 25, and thirteen comics in the Top 50 in May 2023.

However, numbers were up from two years ago as the Spider-Man franchise had two comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50 in May 2022.

First, let’s start with the star of Marvel Comics: Peter Parker.

Ultimate Spider-Man #5 shipped in the final week of May 2024 and still grabbed the number 2 spot. We continue to see that good comics sell well no matter when they ship in a month.

Amazing Spider-Man #49 grabbed the number 3 spot and Amazing Spider-Man #50 took the number 6 spot. This was better than last month when the two issues of Amazing Spider-Man came in at the number 4 spot and the number 8 spot.

I know a lot of people complain about the story on this title. But, I don’t think Marvel Comics cares at all because this title continues to be a sales beast like no other comic on the market. Constantly placing two issues a month in the Top 10 is just ridiculous. Behold the power of Peter Parker!

Spectacular Spider-Men #3 dropped from the number 19 spot to the number 37 spot. This was a big month for this new title. If Spectacular Spider-Man could manage to stay in the Top 25 by its third issue then it would be a strong sign that this ongoing series had the legs to be a power seller.

However, coming in at the number 37 spot just two months after a stellar debut at the number 4 spot shows that a huge percentage of the readership was not impressed enough with the first two issues to add this title to their monthly pull list. I think it is more likely than not that Spectacular Spider-Men falls out of the Top 50 in the next month or two.

All right, let’s check out all of the knock-off Spider-Men.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #20 dropped from the number 56 spot to the number 59 spot. This is the fifth consecutive month that Miles Morales: Spider-Man has fallen in the rankings. However, it appears that this title’s descent in the rankings may be starting to slow down. It will be interesting to see if this title can stabilize itself over the next couple of months and at least remain a consistent Top 75 seller.

Superior Spider-Man #7 ticked up from the number 71 spot to the number 68 spot. This is the second straight month that Superior Spider-Man has climbed up in the rankings. Perhaps this is a sign that this title can establish itself as a consistent Top 75 seller.

Edge of Spider-Verse #4 completely cratered as it fell from the number 20 spot to the number 74 spot. That is a big drop that I was not at all expecting to see this month. This four-issue mini-series was all over the sales rankings as it bounced up and down the Top 75 during its run. In the end, Edge

Symbiote Spider-Man 2099 #3 death spiraled down from the number 53 spot to the number 91 spot. Ouch. As a Miguel O’Hara fan, this one hurt! It appears that this five-issue mini-series is doomed to conclude outside of the Top 100.

Spider-Punk: Arms Race #4 crashed and burned falling from the number 63 spot to the number 105 spot. With this issue, this four-issue mini-series concludes in the Dead TItles Walking category. This mini-series was a sales failure for Marvel Comics.

Spider-Boy #7 fell from the number 61 spot to the number 98 spot. What a big setback for this title as this is the lowest ranking for Spider-Boy to date. Maybe this title can rebound next month and avoid becoming a Dead Title Walking.

Let’s check out the Venom-related titles.

Venom: Separation Anxiety #1 debuted at the number 17 spot. This is a nice debut for this five-issue mini-series. Veteran comic book writer David Michelinie is heading up this title. I have always enjoyed Michelinie’s work and hope he has success with this title. We shall see.

Venom #33 snuck back into the Top 25 by taking the number 24 spot. This is the highest in the rankings for this title in several months.

What If…? Venom #4 fell from the number 57 spot to the number 70 spot. This is the third consecutive month that this title has fallen in the rankings. Jeremy Holt has failed to get readers to stay on board with this title. It looks like this five-issue mini-series will conclude outside of the Top 75 next month.

Carnage #7 fell from the number 76 spot to the number 90 spot. This erased two straight months of gains in the sales rankings.

Let’s wrap things up with the ladies of the Spider-Man franchise.

Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #1 had a great debut coming in at the number 10 spot. This is no surprise as Marvel Comics usually enjoys a strong debut number when they roll out a brand new female lead solo comic. The problem has been after the debut issue when all of these titles seem to rapidly fall in the rankings.

Spider-Gwen used to be a hot character, but she has not sold as well recently. The fact that Stephanie Phillips is the writer also gives me pause about being too bullish on the potential sales success of this title. Phillips has never had any sales success on her prior titles for Marvel Comics or DC Comics. The next few months are going to be interesting to watch. Maybe Spider-Gwen is popular enough to give Phillips the first sales success of her career?

Jackpot & Black Cat #3 continued its death spiral in the rankings falling from the number 83 spot to the number 133 spot. This is a far cry from the number 50 debut this title got two months ago.

I am not at all surprised that Jackpot & Black Cat is a Dead Title Walking with just the third issue. Jackpot was the answer to a question that nobody was asking. Marvel Comics has a real skill at publishing comics for a non-existent audience. Also, hiring Celeste Bronfman, another non-superhero comic book writer, has predictably led to another sales failure. Only a Marvel Comics editor would have expected this to turn out differently.

167 Rise of the Powers of X #4 (Fall of the House of X) (Resolicitation)

168 Wolverine #48 (Resolicitation)

187 Ultimate X-Men #2 (Resolicitation)

The X-Men franchise had three comics in the Top 10, eight comics in the Top 25, and eleven comics in the Top 50. This was the same as in April 2024 when the X-Men franchise had three comics in the Top 10, seven comics in the Top 25, and eleven comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were up by a wide margin as the X-Men franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and six in the Top 50 in May 2023.

Numbers were also up from two years ago as the X-Men franchise had one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and nine comics in the Top 50 in May 2022.

Ultimate X-Men #3 dipped from the number 2 spot to the number 5 spot. Wow. This is so impressive. I honestly did not see this coming. I thought this title would be a Top 25 seller, but I was not expecting it to remain in the Top 5 over its first three issues! I still do not think that this title is a comic that should have “X-Men” on the cover. But, who cares about what I think? Clearly, a ton of readers love what they are getting from this title!

Fall of the House of X #5 dipped from the number 9 spot to the number 12 spot. With this issue, this mini-series has concluded. Fall of the House of X was a massive sales success for Marvel Comics.

Rise of the Powers of X #5 fell from the number 11 spot to the number 27 spot. With this issue, this five-issue mini-series has concluded. I predicted that this mini-series was going to finish in the Top 25. I just missed that by two spots! At any rate, Rise of the Powers of X was another sales hit for Marvel Comics.

X-Men Forever #3 rebounded from the number 32 spot to the number 20 spot. This is not that much lower than its debut at the number 14 spot. What an impressive third month for this four-issue mini-series.

X-Men Forever #4 then fell from the number 20 spot to the number 30 spot. With this issue, X-Men Forever has concluded. I predicted that this mini-series was going to conclude outside of the Top 25 and got this one right. Still, X-Men Forever was a solid sales hit for Marvel Comics.

X-Men ’97 #3 fell from the number 18 spot to the number 25 spot. This is the second straight month that this title has fallen in the rankings. Perhaps this title will have a rebound next month like X-Men Forever had this month. But, I think we are going to see X-Men ’97 slip out of the Top 25.

Giant-Size X-Men #1 debuted at the number 48 spot. This was a disappointing debut and I was hoping it would do better. This issue featured a story from an old-school writer Ann Nocenti plus a reprint of a story told by the iconic Mark Gruenwald, and the talented Ralph Macchio. Good stuff right there!

X-Men: The Wedding Special #1 had a disappointing debut failing to make the Top 50 and coming in at the number 63 spot. I am surprised it was this low given the amount of hype and the fact that most things with “X-Men” on the cover sell well.

Weapon X-Men #4 took the number 67 spot. With this issue, this mini-series has concluded. Weapon X-Men turned out a solid effort in terms of sales success for Marvel Comics.

X-Men #34 took the number 94 spot. This is so low because X-Men #34 had part of its sales numbers incorrectly placed in the April 2024 sales rankings where it took the number 28 spot.

Okay, let’s check out the dudes of the X-Men franchise.

Hellverine #1 had a monster debut taking the number 8 spot. Again, more proof that good comics sell well regardless if they ship in the final week of a month. Benjamin Percy has been on quite the roll as of late as he has had some nice sales success in 2023 and 2024. Percy has become a real menace in the fight for the Joshua Williamson Award each month.

Wolverine #49 took the number 9 spot and Wolverine #50 grabbed the number 23 spot. This was better than April 2024 when the two issues of Wolverine took the numbers 15 and 24 spots. These are incredibly consistent strong sales numbers for a title that cranks out two issues a month. Normally, it is tough to pull that off unless your name is Peter Parker or Bruce Wayne. This title continues to be a white-hot seller under the guiding hands of Percy and LaValle.

Wolverine: Madripoor Knights #4 fell from the number 88 to the number 97 spot. This five-issue mini-series continues to bounce up and down at the bottom of the Top 100. It is going to be a close call for this title to conclude in the Top 100 next month.

Deadpool #2 snagged the number 16 spot. This title might have the legs to remain in the Top 25 for a while.

Let’s wrap things up with the ladies of the X-Men franchise.

Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #3 fell from the number 77 spot to the number 87 spot. It will be a tough fight for this four-issue mini-series to conclude in the Top 100 next month.

The Avengers franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50. This was worse than in April 2024 when the Avengers franchise had two comics in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down in the Top 10, up in the Top 25, and flat in the Top 50 as the Avengers franchise had one comic in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50 in May 2023.

Numbers were down by a large margin from two years ago as the Avengers franchise had two comics in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50 in May 2022.

Avengers #14 climbed up from the number 40 spot to the number 19 spot. This is as high as we have seen Avengers in quite some time.

Avengers: Twilight #6 fell from the number 10 spot to the number 29 spot. With this issue, this mini-series has concluded. I am surprised how this mini-series ended on such a down note in the sales rankings. This title had averaged the number 16 spot over the first five issues. Add to that the fact that Avengers: Twilight scored the number 10 spot in April 2024, I was confident that this title was going to possibly score a Top 15 finish. The fact that this title ended up concluding outside of the Top 25 is a real stunner. At any rate, Avengers: Twilight was a fantastic sales success for Marvel Comics.

It’s now time to check out the hombres of the Avengers franchise.

Ultimate Black Panther #4 fell from the number 7 spot to the number 15 spot. This is the lowest this title has sold to this point. But, this is still a fantastic sales ranking! This title has been a big hit with readers.

Captain America #9 took the number 72 spot. Captain America #8 had some of its numbers improperly placed in March instead of all of them being placed in April. So, let’s compare this to Captain America #7 which took the number 82 spot in March 2024. WE shall see if this title can remain in the Top 75 going forward.

Invincible Iron Man #18 came in at the number 182 spot. However, this issue shipped on May 1, 2024, and improperly had some of its sales numbers included in the April 2024 sales rankings. So, there is no doubt that Mr. Emma Frost’s title would have been much higher in the rankings if all of its numbers had been properly included in the May 2024 sales rankings.

All right, let’s check out the duo titles.

Black Widow & Hawkeye #3 continued its breathtaking freefall in the rankings as it fell from the number 100 spot to the number 123 spot. We all knew this was going to happen despite this title starring two popular mainstream superheroes. Stephanie Phillips is the writer so we all knew this title was doomed to be a Dead Title Walking in short order.

Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #4 fell from the number 108 spot to the number 134 spot. I predicted that Steve Orlando’s mini-series would conclude in the Dead Titles Walking category so I am not surprised. This four-issue mini-series was a sales failure for Marvel Comics.

Let’s wrap things up with the ladies of the Avengers franchise.

Sensational She-Hulk #8 barely made the Top 100 by taking the number 95 spot. Sensational She-Hulk #7 improperly had its sales numbers split between March 2024 and April 2024. So, let’s compare Sensational She-Hulk #8 with Sensational She-Hulk #6 which took the number 85 spot. This title has been bouncing up and down in an unpredictable fashion over the past couple of months. The next few months will be crucial for this title to see if it can stabilize itself inside the Top 100 or not.

Captain Marvel #8 climbed from the number 157 spot to the number 132 spot. This title continues to be the predictable sales disaster that it always is.

147 Ultimate Spider-Man #1 (Resolicitation)

156 Ultimate Black Panther #1 (Resolicitation)

187 Ultimate X-Men #2 (Resolicitation)

The Ultimate Universe had two comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50. This was worse than in April 2024 when the Ultimate Universe had three comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50.

Up until this month, all three Ultimate Universe titles were bunched together in the Top 10. However, we are finally beginning to see some separation in these three titles with May 2024. Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men are still Top 5 titles. But, Ultimate Black Panther is beginning to fall away from the pack as it is now outside of the Top 10 and at the number 15 spot. This is by far the lowest we have seen for these new Ultimate Universe titles. I am interested to see if Ultimate Black Panther rebounds next month or if it continues a slow descent in the rankings.

Unranked: Batman: Wayne Family Adventures Mini #1

Unranked: Batman and Robin and Howard #3

The Batman franchise had one comic in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50. This was worse than in April 2024 when the Batman franchise had zero comics in teh Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and six comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as the Batman franchise had two comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50 in May 2023.

Numbers were also down from two years ago as the Batman franchise had two comics in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50 in May 2022.

Let’s start with the Bruce Wayne titles.

Batman #147 scored the number 7 spot. It is getting harder for this title to score a Top 5 spot with the increased competition from Peter Parker in Ultimate Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man.

Batman Superman World’s Finest #27 fell from the number 30 spot to the number 50 spot. This is the lowest that we have seen this title. Maybe this month is an aberration and it will climb back up into the 30s next month.

The Bat-Man First Knight #3 fell from the number 38 spot to the number 58 spot. With this issue, this mini-series has concluded. I thought this mini-series had a good shot of concluding in the Top 50. But, that did not happen. At any rate, Bat-Man First Knight was a rare sales success for DC Comics.

Batman and Robin #9 fell from the number 46 spot to the number 65 spot. This title has become erratic over the past several months as it bounces in and out of the Top 50.

Detective Comics #1085 fell from the 41 spot to the number 85 spot. This was an unexpectedly large drop in the rankings. This is also the lowest in the rankings that we have seen for Detective Comics in a while.

Batman Dark Age #3 dropped from the number 89 spot to the number 113 spot. Mark Russell cannot find sales success even when given the second most popular character in the entire comic book industry. With just the third issue this mini-series is already a Dead Title Walking. That will not change over the second half of this six-issue mini-series.

Batman Dylan Dog #3 dipped from the number 142 spot to the number 145 spot. With this issue, this mini-series has concluded. This title was another sales disappointment for DC Comics.

Batman the Brave and the Bold #13 fell from the number 140 spot to the number 170 spot. This anthology title continues to be a sales failure. This is no surprise as anthology titles rarely sell very well.

All right, let’s check out the Bat-Boys of the Batman franchise.

Nightwing #114 fell from the number 23 spot to the number 46 spot. This title has developed a monthly pattern that yo-yos from the 20s to the 40s.

The Boy Wonder #1 had a terrible debut failing even to make the Top 50 and coming in at the number 56 spot. Ba is a writer/artist from Senegal. I will admit that I have never heard of him. At any rate, this five-issue mini-series seems destined to conclude in the Dead Titles Walking based on this poor debut.

Red Hood the Hill #4 climbed from the number 133 spot to the number 127 spot. This is the second straight month that this title has gone up in the rankings. However, I am doubtful that this six-issue mini-series can escape the Dead Titles Walking category before it concludes.

Let’s take a look at the team titles.

Birds of Prey #9 came in at the number 77 spot. This is the first time that this title has fallen out of the Top 75. Next month will be pivotal as we will see if this title can rebound or is now going to be struggling to stay in the Top 100.

Outsiders #7 climbed from the 158 spot to the number 151 spot. This is the second straight month that this twelve-issue mini-series has gone up in the rankings. However, this is still a dreadful sales ranking.

Let’s check out the ladies of the Batman franchise.

Poison Ivy #21 had its sales numbers improperly split between the March 2024 sales ranking and the April 2024 sales ranking. So, let’s compare Poison Ivy #22 to Poison Ivy #20 which took the number 55 spot in March 2024. Poison Ivy #22 fell to the number 64 spot. This title looks like it is cooling off and is sliding down the sales ranking.

Catwoman #65 fell from the number 78 spot to the number 102 spot. Thus ends Catwoman’s two-month adventure outside of the Dead Titles Walking category. This title is back to where we normally find it.

Harley Quinn #40 dropped from the number 115 spot to the number 154 spot. This title continues to be a sales dud.

Let’s wrap things up with the long villain title.

Penguin #10 fell from the number 126 spot to the number 148 spot. This twelve-issue mini-series is about to come to a merciful end.

119 Power Girl #9 (House of Brainiac)

143 Superman House of Brainiac Special #1 (House of Brainiac) (One-Shot) (Resolicitation)

153 Kneel Before Zod #5 (Of 12)

Unranked: Sinister Sons #4

The Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50. This was the same as in April 2024 when the Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as the Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50 in May 2023.

However, numbers were up from two years ago as the Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50 in May 2022.

Action Comics #1065 ticked down from the number 21 spot to the number 22 spot. The House of Brainiac event continues to pay dividends for Action Comics.

Superman #14 dipped from the number 25 spot to the number 34 spot. There was just no way that the comic book gods were going to allow two Superman titles in the Top 25 for two consecutive months!

Power Girl #9 fell from the number 94 spot to the number 119 spot. This title is right back in the Dead Titles Walking category where we normally find this Leah Williamson-penned comic. I can only hope that DC Comics finally blesses PG with a real writer at some point. She deserves it. Having said that, the cover for Power Girl #9 was brilliant! Gold star for you, DC Comics.

Kneel Before Zod #5 climbed from being unranked to taking the number 153 spot. This was a big rebound for this twelve-issue mini-series. I am still not bullish on this title and feel confident that it has little chance of escaping the Dead Titles Walking category.

Justice League Franchise

13 Justice League Vs Godzilla Vs Kong #7 (Of 7)

36 Wonder Woman #9

61 Green Lantern #11

117 The Flash #9

118 Green Arrow #12

139 Green Lantern War Journal #9

The Justice League franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50. This was better than in April 2024 when the Justice League franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were up/down/flat as the Justice League franchise had one comic in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50 in May 2023.

Numbers were up/down/flat from two years ago as the Justice League franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50 in May 2022.

Justice League Vs Godzilla Vs Kong #7 took the number 13 spot. With this issue, this mini-series has concluded. Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong was a smash sales success for DC Comics. This was a rare moment for DC Comics and they are sure to miss this title going forward.

Maybe, and I know I am being crazy here, but maybe DC Comics can roll out a new Justice League title starring all of their iconic characters and pair it up with a talented comic book writer? Nah, that probably makes too much sense.

Let’s check out the guys of the Justice League franchise.

Green Lantern #11 ticked down from the number 58 spot to the number 61 spot. This title is facing an uphill battle of ever getting back into the Top 50. This is more bad news for DC Comics who is looking for someone other than Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent into the Top 50 monthly.

Green Lantern War Journal #9 fell from the number 134 spot to the number 139 spot. This title is doomed to roam forever in the Dead Titles Walking category. This is rather incredible. Remember what a sales juggernaut the Green Lantern franchise was under Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi back in the day? Good times.

The Flash #9 crashed from the number 87 spot to the number 117 spot. Welp. So much for the Flash’s brief escape from the Dead Titels Walking category. That lasted all of one month. This current direction with the Flash franchise is just not working at all. There is no reason why The Flash should be in the Dead Titles Walking category. That is pure comic book malpractice by DC Comics. It is time to bring back Barry Allen and get a new writer on this title.

Green Arrow #12 fell from the number 98 spot to the number 118 spot. And with that, Green Arrow’s one-month dalliance with being outside of the Dead Titles Walking category has swiftly ended. DC Comics announced that this mini-series has been converted into an ongoing title. I am unsure why they pulled the trigger on that decision since this title cannot escape the Dead Titles Walking category. Maybe they have something big in mind for this title going forward. We shall see.

Let’s wrap up with the sole lady of the Justice League.

Wonder Woman #9 fell from the number 31 spot to the number 36 spot. This is the lowest sales ranking that this title has gotten so far. DC Comics cannot afford to have this title slip out of the Top 50 already. We shall see if this title can slow its descent in the rankings and remain a constant Top 50 title.

Justice Society Franchise

116 Alan Scott The Green Lantern #6 (Of 6)

The Justice Society franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and zero comics in the Top 50. This was the same as in April 2024 when the Justice Society franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and zero comics in the Top 50.

Alan Scott The Green Lantern #6 bounced from the number 162 spot to the number 116 spot. With this issue, this mini-series has concluded. Like all of the other two Justice Society mini-series, Alan Scott The Green Lantern was another sales failure for DC Comics. DC Comics’ editorial is clueless on how to handle this once great and iconic franchise.

Mantle Swap Comics

59 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #20 (Marvel Comics)

68 Superior Spider-Man #7 (Marvel Comics)

87 Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #3 (Marvel Comics)

105 Spider-Punk: Arms Race #4 (Marvel Comics)

132 Captain Marvel #8 (Marvel Comics)

137 Vengeance of the Moon Knight #5 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

174 Blue Beetle #9 (DC Comics)

There were zero mantle swap comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and zero comics in the Top 50. This was the same as in April 2024 when there were zero mantle swap comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and zero comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as there was one mantle swap comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50 in May 2023.

Blue Beetle #9 rose from being unranked to the number 174 spot. Jamie Reyes never sells. This title is lucky to be in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Legacy Character Comics

46 Nightwing #114 (DC Comics)

56 The Boy Wonder #1 (Of 5) (DC Comics)

71 Titans #11 (DC Comics)

77 Birds of Prey #9 (DC Comics)

98 Spider-Boy #7 (Marvel Comics)

117 The Flash #9 (DC Comics)

119 Power Girl #9 (House of Brainiac) (DC Comics)

127 Red Hood the Hill #4 (Of 6) (DC Comics)

151 Outsiders #7 (DC Comics)

Unranked: Sinister Sons #4 (DC Comics)

Unranked: Batman: Wayne Family Adventures Mini #1 (DC Comics)

There were zero legacy character comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50. This was worse than in April 2024 when there were zero legacy character comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were way down as there was one legacy character comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50 in May 2023.

Titans #11 fell from the number 59 spot to the number 71 spot. This is the same spot in the rankings that Titans #10 had in March 2024. It looks like this title is not going to crack back into the Top 50. At this point, DC Comics must hope that Titans remains a consistent Top 75 title. This isn’t very reassuring. The Titans franchise should be performing better than this.

Sinister Sons #4 was unranked for the third straight month. This six-issue mini-series remains an unmitigated sales disaster.

Female Lead Comics

10 Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #1 (Marvel Comics)

36 Wonder Woman #9 (DC Comics)

64 Poison Ivy #22 (DC Comics)

77 Birds of Prey #9 (DC Comics)

95 Sensational She-Hulk #8 (Marvel Comics)

102 Catwoman #65 (DC Comics)

119 Power Girl #9 (House of Brainiac) (DC Comics)

132 Captain Marvel #8 (Marvel Comics)

133 Jackpot & Black Cat #3 (Marvel Comics)

154 Harley Quinn #40 (DC Comics)

Unranked: Primer #3 (DC Comics)

Numbers were flat in the Top 100 from two years ago as DC Comics had three female lead comics in the Top 100 in May 2022.

Marvel Comics and DC Comics had a pathetic pillow fight that ended with a miserable 3-3 draw. Neither publisher is having much success in this category these days. It seems that both Marvel COmics and DC Comics have lost the plot on how to produce a popular and successful slate of female solo superhero titles. Both publishers need to re-examine the writers they saddle these titles with and the overall approach that they take to these titles.

Just as a matter of perspective. If I placed Gun Honey: Collision Course #1 in this list then it would have taken third place beating out a ton of big-name female superheroes. That is stunning. Titan Comics sure knows what readers want.

Minority Lead Comics

15 Ultimate Black Panther #4 (Marvel Comics)

59 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #20 (Marvel Comics)

Numbers were flat in the Top 100 from two years ago as there was one minority lead comic in the Top 100 in May 2022.

Marvel Comics blanked DC Comics 6-0 in the Top 100. Neither publisher is doing great in this category as there were only two minority lead titles in the Top 75 between both publishers. That is atrocious. But, DC Comics in particular should be beyond embarrassed. With the great roster of minority characters, it is inexcusable that they have zero titles in the Top 100.

Dead Titles Walking

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, titles outside of the Top 100 are usually selling under the 18,000 unit sales mark. These are the Marvel Comics and DC Comics titles that are dead titles walking.

This was largely flat from the nine dead titles walking that Marvel Comics had in April 2024 which comprised 14% of Marvel Comics’ new titles.

Year-over-year numbers were way down as Marvel Comics had thirty dead titles walking in May 2023. This comprised 34% of Marvel Comics’ new titles in May 2023.

DC Comics had twenty-six dead titles walking out of DC Comics’ forty-three new titles in May 2024. This means that 60% of the New DC Comics’ titles in May 2023 were dead titles walking. That is a shocking percentage and the highest we have seen over the past three years.

This was up from the nineteen dead titles walking that DC Comics had in April 2024 which comprised 46% of DC Comics’ new titles.

Year-over-year numbers were also up as DC Comics had twenty dead titles walking in May 2023. This comprised 41% of DC Comics’ new titles in May 2023.

Tini Howard had two dead titles walking with Catwoman #65 at the number 102 spot and Harley Quinn #40 at the number 154 spot.

Wow, we go straight to tie-breakers! We will first eliminate writers who have an anthology issue starring multiple writers as one of their dead titles walking. This knocks out Maines, Lanzig, Kelly, and Russell. That leaves Tini Howard as the only writer of the five candidates who had two ongoing monthly titles in this category.

Therefore, the Tini Howard Award for May 2024 goes to…Tini Howard! The Queen of Dead Titles Walking finally gets her crown back!

All right, that is it for May 2024 Will Marvel Comics continue its domination of the Top 200 in June 2024? We will find out. Until then, everyone stay safe and be good!
