How Miles Morales Arrival In New Ultimate Universe Plays Into The Maker’s Return

Several weeks ago, Marvel provided us with details of the newest title joining the Ultimate Universe publishing line: Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion. This new mini-series will be led by Miles Morales as he visits the new Ultimate Universe that The Maker created for the first time. Given that the title for this new mini-series includes the word Incursion it means the mini-series will immediately play an important role in the future of the Ultimate Universe. Specifically, the big event surrounding The Maker’s return Jonathan Hickman, Deniz Camp, Peach Momoko, Bryan Eward Hill, and Christopher Condon have been counting down too. And with this new mini-series Miles Morales appears to be set up to play a big role in the return.

It was never a question if Miles Morales would visit the new Ultimate Universe. The question was when this would happen. During Ultimate Invasion #1 The Maker made it a point to visit Miles Morales before creating his own Ultimate Universe. The Maker did this because he viewed Miles as a brother because they were the survivors of the original Ultimate Universe. While Miles turned down the offer join him in the new Ultimate Universe, The Maker gave Miles a blank card if he ever changed his mind.

The exact nature of the blank card that The Maker gave to Miles was one of the biggest questions left unanswered in Ultimate Invasion. That questions looks like it has finally been answered in solicitation for Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #1. The solicitation teases:

Before The Maker remade Earth-6160, he left Miles Morales the key to reach his new universe… and when Miles’ baby sister, Billie, uses it to travel to the Ultimate Universe, it’s up to Spider-Man to save her! But the Ultimate Universe is never safe for any Spider-Man! When the Spot attacks, Miles will have to team up with an all-new Peter Parker – and that’s just the start of his journey across Earth-6160…

What Miles’ baby sister, Billie, likely finds is the blank card The Maker gave to Miles, answering that it was a multi-dimension key to travel to the Ultimate Universe. Specifically it will be for the new Ultimate Universe located on Earth-6160 rather than Earth-1610, the designation for the original Ultimate Universe. So this won’t exactly be a homecoming for Miles as The Maker remade Earth-6160 into his own ideal Marvel Universe.

So while there will be a lot of things that will be familiar to Miles the universe will be completely new for him. It will also bring to question if there is a new Ultimate Miles Morales that exists in this universe that Miles will run into. And if he doesn’t run into a new counterpart it may be because The Maker did something to Miles’ Earth-6160 counterpart because of their “brotherhood.”

COUNTDOWN TO THE MAKER’S RETURN CONTINUES

Miles Morales making his way to the Ultimate Universe will be further building out the anticipation for The Maker’s return. It has been an open secret that The Maker’s return will be happening. Every single title in the new Ultimate Universe line has been having a countdown and pointing out the month it takes place.

Based on the countdown that’s been running across The Ultimates, Ultimate Spider-Man, X-Men, and Black Panther the timing for The Maker’s return will happen at the end of 2025. Which so happens to line-up with when Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion would be ending. Because of that there is a high likelihood that the final issue of Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion will be where The Maker will make his return.

The biggest clue goes back to the blank card that The Maker left for Miles Morales. Based on the solicitation for the first issue the blank card will be used by Miles and his baby sister to travel to the new Ultimate Universe. But given The Maker being known for long-term planning that isn’t the only reason he left Miles a key to enter the Ultimate Universe he created.

What could be the case is that Miles was The Maker’s back-up plan if things went south with his plans. Which is exactly what happened in Ultimate Invasion #4 with The Maker trapped in another dimension with Ultimate Kang. Having knowledge with the Multiverse we saw The Maker have the new Ultimate Reed Richards/Doctor Doom work on things like the Immortus Engine. Miles could unexpectedly act as a key to activate something The Maker created as a back-up plan if someone took him out.

WILL WE SEE THE ORIGINAL ULTIMATE UNIVERSE

The last time we saw the original Ultimate Universe was back in Venom #26 released in July 2020. In that issue The Maker used a Venom symbiote, which was able to withstand inter-dimensional travel, to make his way back to Earth-1610. When he finally returned to Earth-1610 The Maker found a Time Square that has been destroyed by what appears to be a Crisis-level event. The hint of a Crisis event is further hinted by the fact it there were signs of The Ultimates and Ultimate Spider-Man/Peter Parker have disappeared.

Given how purposeful Jonathan Hickman, Deniz Camp, and the rest of the Ultimate Universe creative teams have been there is no way this would be ignored. Hickman even made it a point to utilize elements from Donny Cates’ Venom run where The Maker was featured as part of the Ultimate Invasion event. It being established that the original Ultimate Universe still exists post-Secret Wars is something Hickman and Camp can certainly use.

Bringing Miles Morales into the fold with the new Ultimate Universe located on Earth-6160 could provide hints at that. It is even possible that the Incursion that Miles integration will cause is not with the main Marvel Universe (Earth-616) and the new Ultimate Universe. The upcoming event with The Maker’s return could instead be an Incursion crossover between the two versions of the Ultimate Universe.

It would bring things full circle if The Maker had to deal with what he’s done to both versions of the Ultimate Universe. Given how powerful The Maker and his Council are it would certainly help the heroes of the current Ultimate Universe to have the heroes from the original version helping them out.
