Since The Revolution counted down Money Magazine’s listing of the Top 10 best places to live in the United States, I figured that we would flip things this week and check out the most miserable places in the United States. Forbes.com put out this listing and ranked the cities based on factors like unemployment, personal tax rates, commute times, weather, crime and the number and proximity of toxic “Superfund” sites. The rankings are based on the 150 largest metro areas in the United States. And here are the Top 10 most miserable places to live in the United States.

10. Providence, Rhode Island
9. Charlotte, North Carolina
8. Modesto, California
7. Los Angeles, California
6. Chicago, Illinois
5. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
4. New York, New York
3. Flint, Michigan
2. Stockton, California
1. Detroit, Michigan

I’m not surprised at all with this Top 10 list. I pretty much figured that most of these cities would appear somewhere in the top 10. California rakes in with three cities in the top 10 while Michigan stakes a fine claim with two of the top three cities. Still, I must say that I have visited most of these cities and that there is plenty of fun to be had in many of these cities in this Top 10 listing.

All right, let’s check out the comic books for this week. It looks like we have a total of 9 titles headed to the Bunker this week. This week’s shipment of comic books is a bit heavier with DC titles than Marvel titles.

Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Honestly, nothing from DC particularly excites me this week. I guess since I have to pick a title I will go ahead and go with Justice Society of America #12. The last issue of the JSA wasn’t’ all that great of a read. And Justice League of America #12 appears to cram even more new characters into what is already an overcrowded title. Hopefully, Johns can get this title back on track.

Which DC comic book am I least looking forward to reading? That would be Detective Comics #841. Dini has been concentrating on Countdown this past year and that has taken a toll on Detective Comics. I hope that with Countdown drawing to its conclusion that Dini can focus back in on Detective Comics and make this title a solid read once again.

Which Marvel comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Well, Brubaker’s Uncanny X-Men #495 kicks off the new direction of this title spinning out from the conclusion of Messiah Complex. I’m interested to see what Brubaker has in store for us and if seeing the X-Men disbanded once again is going to yield anything different and compelling.

However, the Marvel comic book that I am most looking forward to reading is The Twelve #2. I absolutely loved the debut issue of The Twelve. JMS and Chris Weston really impressed me with their effort on this title. Also, it doesn’t hurt that I’m such a mark for Golden Age characters.

Which Marvel comic book am I least looking forward to reading? That would be Amazing Spider-Man #549. Marc Guggenheim and Salvador Larroca take their turn on this title. This title isn’t horrendous, but it simply isn’t worth the money of having to purchase it three times a month. You have to crank out one hell of a read to get me to spend that much money on a title. I’m also not a fan of constantly rotating the creative team every three issues. I’m also getting the impression that it is really Joey Q who is writing Amazing Spider-Man from behind the curtain.

I would rather see Marvel drop this silly three times a month schedule and revert back to a normal monthly schedule and place one consistent creative team on this title to try and salvage the wreckage stemming from Joey Q’s retcon.

I’ll try my best to start posting reviews as soon as possible. I hope everyone enjoys their new comic books for this week.

  1. Fables
    JSA
    Ms. Marvel
    Northlanders
    Uncanny X-Men

Two quality Vertigo titles, JSA (I’m really hoping something starts to happen in this “Kingdom Come” story), Ms. Marvel (regular artist’s final issue after about twelve issues with one fill-in), and Uncanny X-Men (I’m really looking forward to Choi as regular artist). On a whim, I may try Davis’ new ClanDestine miniseries.

  2. Look forward to your comments on Nightwing – I think the new team is the best its been since before Devin.

So will you cancel Amazing Spiderman? I ham now just getting Ulimate Spiderman as I dont want to get 4 titles a month.

  3. Hey Rokk,

Been reading your site for awhile now and I thought I should join the conversation!

    DC Pick: Fables
DC Un-pick: None (only buying this and JSA)

    Marvel Pick: ClanDestine
    Marvel Un-Pick: None

  4. ….to try and salvage the wreckage stemming from Joey Q’s retcon.

    Ethical question:
Would you rather have Joe pulled a Mephesto over on Wolverine and erased the same of Origins as well as that whole thing were he’s now a werewolf who gets into centires old feuds based on hair color or keep things as they were?

  5. If you were looking to see if you enjoy Fables, this week’s issue was the end of a major arc; #70 comes out on the 27th, and is a one-shot, followed by a two-parter in March and April. It’s kind of a hard series to just pick up and read, in my opinion, but the March/April issues are a two-parter focussed on Cinderella (secret agent), so you might try there (and read a bit of Wikipedia to familiarize yourself with the setting). It’s a very expansive fictional universe, but very enjoyable.

On JSA: Technically good writing, where the individual moments work, but the series as a whole has too many characters being introduced too fast and doing too little, and the plot is stagnant.

  6. Also, in brief:

UXM: Brubaker’s best issue of the series yet, with fantastic art.

ClanDestine: I did buy it; I’ve never read anything related to CD before, and, to be honest, I think Davis could have done a better job reintroducing them to potential newbs like myself, but the overall story works well, and the art is lovely (Davis is also doing the art for Matt Fraction’s issue of Young Avengers Presents due in June, a team-up between Kate/Hawkeye II and Clint/Hawkeye I).

  7. As someone who lives in Baltimore (which, honestly, I am surprised is not on the Money bottom list), I am really glad that Money publishes this list. That way, I have no chance of meeting the people who read Money magazine anywhere I care to go.

  8. Rokk,

You MUST read Fables! I’d recommend starting from the first TPB though, cos it’s easy to get lost in almost 5 years of stories if you jump on at #70.

By the way I agree with you on the latest review of JSA. A year’s gone by and somehow the title still hasn’t captured the same level of storytelling as the previous launch of the title did.
