Sanity resumes with this week’s shipment of comic books that are headed to the Bunker. After getting a ridiculous 20 titles with 14 titles from Marvel alone last week, I knew that I had to be in for a much smaller week this Wednesday. We have a total of 8 titles headed to the Bunker. And this assortment of comic books is evenly split between Marvel and DC. With the Fourth of July coming up, I am glad that I was not buried with another monster shipment of comic books.

Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Last week was an easy choice with Final Crisis #2. This week is an equally easy choice with Batman #678 headed our way. Morrison’s Batman RIP story arc is the hottest story at the moment. Yeah, that’s right, even better than the two big events from Marvel and DC.

Which DC comic book am I least looking forward to reading? That would be Trinity #5. I really hope that Busiek manages to work a little magic on this title quickly. I would hate to think that I am going to have to suffer through another reading experience like I did with Countdown.

Which Marvel comic book am I most looking forward to reading? This is a tough choice. I am sure that Avengers/Invaders #3 is going to be an absolute blast to read. Krueger and Ross have done a good job with this title.

However, I am going to have to go with Astonishing X-Men #25. I love Ellis and I am a big fan of Bianchi’s artwork. I have high hopes for this title.

Which Marvel comic book am I least looking forward to reading? This is an easy choice. Amazing Spider-Man #564. This title is just a hot mess. And I have seen nothing to indicate that this title is going to seriously improve anytime in the near future.

As always, I’ll try my best to start posting reviews as soon as possible. I hope everyone enjoys their new comic books for this week. And to all my fellow Americans, have a great Fourth of July!

  1. A small batch for me as well, four books, one of which came out last week.

Trinity #5: As much as I defended the title after the first two issues, I admit issues 3 and 4 left a bit to be desired. Still, I’m on board for a little while longer.

Avengers/Invaders #3: A very enjoyable, well crafted series so far. It’s a shame this is being released simultaneously with Secret Invasion, as SI may be stealing thunder from this series. I’m concerned this series, well deserving of attention, is being lost in the summer event shuffle. This crossover could have (should have?) been the Marvel summer event itself.

Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam! #1: I just learned of this title being released last week, and didn’t realize until yesterday it was coming out this week. I love Captain Marvel, despite my experience with him being more from the live action and animated TV shows than his comics. In this era of every title and character being “edgy,” it’s good to see a character with old school charm and whimzy still around these days. He’s a perfect fit for the Johnny DC line; I can’t wait to read this with my 5 year old daughter.

Ms. Marvel #28: this is last week’s release I just picked up today. I’m intrigued with the character in both the SI and Avengers/Invaders titles, so I thought I’d give her book a try. I like to do that with a title I haven’t read before, and it’s cool when it pays off. I tried Avengers: The Initiative for the first time last week and was pleasantly surprised.

  2. Surprisingly small week for the first of a month; just four titles this week; Vertigo’s Northlanders and Fables, plus Astonishing X-Men and Avengers/Invaders.

I was even more surprised to find that my comics arrived on time today, since yesterday was Canada Day, and holidays normally delay stuff.

  3. To be totally honest, I am psyched the most for Squadron Supreme. American Flagg’s awesomeness knew no bounds, and I am hoping Chaykin can do the same for this property.
