Oh c’mon! This is ridiculous. I’m getting a retarded amount of comic books shipped to the Bunker today. I really am a comic book slut. A total of 20 titles will be headed my way. I’ll just have to be very discriminatory in which titles I feel are worthy of a review this week.

Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Well, we certainly have plenty of titles to choose from this week. There are several issues that I’m particularly interested in reading. We are finally getting the debut issue of the new Batman and the Outsiders #1. Chuck Dixon is the writer for this new title. I’m not a huge fan of Dixon, but I do think he is capable of cranking out a solid read. If nothing else we should be in store for a nicely paced story with plenty of action. I’m rather curious to see how this odd cast of characters works together. The team for this issue consists of Grace, Katana, Catwoman, Metamorpho and Catwoman. This just seems to be a bit of a mix-mash of characters. This title is either going to be a surprisingly fun read or a complete train wreck.

I’m also looking forward to Countdown to Final Crisis #24. Dini really impressed me with the last issue and I am confident that we are in store for good reads every week until the end of this series and the beginning of Final Crisis.

However, the title that I am most looking forward to this week is Booster Gold #4. Johns and Katz have been cranking out an excellent read on this title. This comic book is rich with the history of the DCU and has more twists and turns than your average comic book. Booster Gold has quickly become one of my favorite DC titles.

Which DC comic book am I least looking forward to reading? That would be Teen Titans East Special #1. Oddly, enough, at first blush I was psyched to see that this issue was coming out this week. And then I looked at the description for this issue and discovered that Judd Winick is the writer. That is when this title immediately garnered the dubious honor of being the title I’m least looking forward to reading. Winick rarely impresses me with his work. And I’m sure we can look forward to a mopey bunch of Titans stuck in the Grunge Era of the mid-1990’s who are all trying desperately hard to be tragically hip.

Which Marvel comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Now this is a tough one to pick this week since we have some great reads in store from us from the House of Ideas this week. Thor #4 should be a great issue. JMS has done a fine job on this title and writes a wonderful Thor. Now that JMS got his rocks off with his obligatory punking out of Iron Man that he is obsessively compelled to do on any title that he writes, hopefully he can go back to spinning the intriguing tale of Thor and the return of the Norse Gods.

X-Factor #25 should be a fantastic read. This title is normally one of my favorite reads. Add that the additional fact that this is a Messiah Complex issue and this issue would normally be a lock for the coveted position of the title I am most looking forward to reading. Normally. But, this week isn’t normal. Why is that? Because this week offers up the debut of the one true Captain Marvel.

That’s right the real Captain Marvel, Mar-vell himself, is back in the saddle again with Captain Marvel #1. Now, I don’t know why, but I absolutely fell in love with this character as a little kid. I just thought that Captain Marvel was the coolest. And when Marvel killed him off in that special one-shot graphic novel, well, I’ll admit it, I cried. Oh whatever, you know you bastards out there have squirted out a tear or two at one point of your comic book reading life. 😉

Now, I am a little pissed that Marvel didn’t really bring Captain Marvel back to life. It sucks that every other character in the Marvel Universe gets a second, third or fourth chance at life in the 616 universe other than my boy Mar-vell. Oh well, complaining won’t get me anywhere since Marvel doesn’t care about my opinion. I’ll just enjoy whatever little Mar-vell action that Marvel is willing to give me.

Which Marvel comic book am I least looking forward to reading? We certainly have no shortage of titles worthy of this dubious honor. New Avengers is always an excellent candidate for this weekly award. Until Bendis can prove to me he can crank out a quality read with New Avengers I will continue to place his title in the running for this award. Luckily, there are titles even worse than New Avengers coming out this week.

Punisher War Journal #13 would be a fine candidate for this award. After starting strong out of the blocks with several great reads, Fraction has managed to reduce this title to poop on a stick. I’m not too sure how much longer I can stick with this title.

Normally, Ghost Rider Annual #1 would get the nod since most annuals are pure filler and rather pedestrian reads. However, Stuart Moore is writing the annual and not Daniel Way, so I’m going to have to go with Ghost Rider #17. Odds are that if there is a Daniel Way written issue on my list of titles headed to the Bunker then that issue is going to be the title I’m least looking forward to reading. Way’s Ghost Rider is so bad that I just stopped posting reviews since I never had anything positive to say about them.

I’ll try my best to start posting reviews as soon as possible. I hope everyone enjoys their new comic books for this week.

  1. Booster Gold
    Captain Marvel
    Fables
Green Arrow/Black Canary (I’m trying the first arc just to see what happens with Green Arrow and the Amazon; and the art is really awesome)
House of M: Avengers (Christos Gage writing and Mike Perkins drawing, so I felt I had to support each; plus, Luke Cage with his pimpin’ yellow silk shirt)
    Thor
Wonder Woman (having read the debut issue, I would recommend the Revolution try writer Gail Simone’s first issue, albeit with a cautionary*)
World War Hulk (for all that this story has been predictable so far, and it’s clear the Hulk doesn’t win, I have no idea what is going to happen in this one)
    X-Factor

    * Cautionary: this arc contains an entire army of Captain Nazis. Although, shouldn’t Captain Nazi get the same exemption the Red Skull gets, since he’s a classic DC villain (well, classic Fawcett, technically)?

  2. Rokk, you had 12 comic books last week and only reviewed 4. You are slacking buddy. Can you post up more reviews? Or at least tell me where else to go for synopses? 🙂

  3. Having perused my brother’s copy of Titans East, I have to say that Didio and Winick somehow managed to make “dead Titans” an even more massive waste than it already was (coupled with, in interviews, Winick’s rather offensive judgement that the characters in question were “misfires” who he gleefully assembled so that he could off them).
