REVIEW

Power Rangers: Across the Morphin Grid hits on what is the desired result of an anthology series that collects stories that tap into the magic of the franchise. While the focus was still mostly on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers each story stood on its own. They stood on their own because each story came across as unique to the main character of their respective story.

A big part of the success of Power Rangers: Across the Morphin Grid is how each creative team maximized their page count. No story felt short changed or was running out of time to tell the story that was intended. A full narrative was told so that each story stood on its own while giving each Power Ranger spotlighted a chance to shine. It certainly helps that David Yost, Nakia Burrise, Steve Cardenas, Walter Jones, and Meghan Camarena were each able to write stories with their respective Rangers they portrayed. Credit to JD Sutphin and Mat Groom who helped co-write the Burrise and Cardenas stories, respectively, that helped with nailing the comic book pacing of their stories.

The stories that particularly stood out were for Billy Cranston and Tanya Sloan. Both stories worked best because they told stories in the future at some point past their respective full-time Power Rangers’ careers. This choice creates a sense of discovery to what was told with older versions of these characters. It gave that extra punch to the personal directions they took for Billy and Tanya, respectively.

Tanya’s story was particularly cool because she was a character we haven’t seen much since her time as the Zeo Ranger and a portion of the Turbo run. Confirming what she did in her post-Power Ranger career is a story was a follow-up that her character deserved. Seeing her go on a solo mission to save her Power Rangers peers added to how her growth is showcased. Though the thing that this story may be remembered for is revealing the key relationship Tanya maintained and grew in her post-Ranger career. It was a nice surprise that will make many fans happy.

When it came to the stories for Zack Taylor, Rocky DeSantos, and Chloe Ashford these all fell on the more fun, lighthearted side of the stories. They don’t really expand on any of these characters. But what they do accomplish was providing fun solo adventures that emphasizes the variety of stories that can be told in the Power Rangers Universe. Not everything has to be dark and serious or dramatic. What made so many fell in love with the franchise was how fun things are. Zack, Rocky, and Chloe’s stories certainly hit on those notes.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Power Rangers: Across The Morphin Grid delivers a fun ride that showcases the variety of stories that can be told with the franchise. There will certainly be favorites from this anthology one-shot, personally Billy Cranston and Tanya Sloan stood out, but all the stories together created a fun package for fans to enjoy. Hopefully this isn’t the last time we get this type of Power Rangers anthology comics and future versions give time to shine to other Power Rangers (Ninja Storm and SPD please!).
