Power Rangers Prime #2 Review

Power Rangers Prime #2 Advance Review

Power Rangers Prime’s first issue delivered a brand new experience in the Power Rangers franchise. Through the first issue we learned the Eltarians have taken over control of most of the universe. In the process the Eltarians have transformed Earth into a refugee safehaven. While this could be seen as a form of benevolence it was also revealed that the Eltarians have eliminated the majority of the Power Rangers. In the Power Rangers place the Eltarians are using their own taskforce and the VR Troopers to police the universe. The last remaining Power Ranger is Lauren Shiba, who is now on the run from the Eltarian taskforce. With all that said we got a chance to check out an early copy the follow-up to the debut of the series. Find out how it turned out with our advance review of Power Rangers Prime #2.

REVIEW

Even more than the first issue, Power Rangers Prime #2 shows that Melissa Flores and Michael YG know exactly what they have with this series. It is a fresh start for the franchise. That means they don’t have to rush with the big Power Rangers moments normally seen at this point. Instead, they take the time to let the reader understand the full gravity of how a universe where the Power Rangers are near extinction truly feels like.

Taking the momentum created by the debut issue Melissa Flores and Michael YG continue to do even greater world building with Power Rangers Prime #2. They do this by building off the big reveal at the end of the first issue. This was a comic book that was very much dominated by the Power Rangers Prime Universe version of Rita Repulsa.

Giving the spotlight to Rita Repulsa created a unique contrast to the debut issue that focused on Lauren Shiba. Having the iconic Mighty Morphin Power Rangers villain in the spotlight this time around certainly gave Power Rangers Prime #2 a whole different energy to it. It is an energy that once again highlights why Rita is such an iconic villain with how easily she fits into any Power Rangers continuity she is placed in. It is an ease thanks to Flores not losing sight of making sure all of her distinct mannerisms in place.

There was certainly a vibe that Rita is a chaotic force that is being introduced into this universe. It is a chaotic force that will be really testing what the Eltarians have created with their control of the universe. The response to Rita’s presence from the Eltarians side works with both their taskforce and the VR Troopers.

On the Power Rangers side of things, Lauren Shiba’s spot as the last remaining Ranger that we know of is pushed forward even more. With that we get further hints at the likely members of the Power Rangers Prime team we will eventually see. Though the likely members gets a little more complicated with how their interaction with Lauren goes in this issue. The way that interaction builds on the way Eltarians operate on Earth makes this character stand out as the most complex of the new characters introduced.

Power Rangers Prime #2 also features some familiar characters to the franchise in new ways that further builds interest in this universe. Flores plays it smart to not make this series completely about how different characters from various seasons are changed for Power Rangers Prime. The choices are very deliberate to enhance different scenes to maximize the impact.

Michael YG’s artwork in the first issue was solid but it is even better Power Rangers Prime #2. It is always good to see artists get better with each passing issue and that is certainly the case here. The detail in the motions of characters was a big improvement. It made the action hit harder and the way characters expressed themselves enhance the dialogue.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Power Rangers Prime #2 delivers a strong follow-up to the debut chapter of this series. Melissa Flores and Michael YG are fully embracing the opportunity to craft a new universe filled with surprises. The continued world building with familiar characters in new forms makes the new additions even stronger. By the end of Power Rangers Prime #2 you’re left even more excited to learn more about this new Power Rangers universe.
