The Revolution’s Third Anniversary and Poll Results

March brings with it The Comic Book Revolution’s three year anniversary. I am surprised that The Revolution is not only still around three years later, but that we have actually grown considerably with each year. The Revolution has grown from being just a solo project of mine to adding Shawn, Jim and Nagacore to the roster of contributors. And The Revolution would not be nearly as successful without the help from my fellow Revolutionaries. Thanks, guys!

And I also want to thank all of the followers of The Revolution for all the support that you guys have given this blog. I would like to thank everyone who links to The Revolution or who have spread the word about The Revolution. Word of mouth is really the best way to grow the readership of a blog.

I also want to thank the followers for always posting great comments. The internet is rightly dinged for being largely a cesspool of ignorance, incivility and hostility. However, The Revolution is blessed with one of the most intelligent readerships that you will find in the blogoverse. You guys always post well crafted, civil, intelligent and interesting comments regardless if you agree with me or not.

I can promise everyone that, with the support of my fellow Revolutionaries, I have enough energy and excitement to keep The Comic Book Revolution going and I will continually try to grow and evolve this blog into something bigger and better.

And in keeping of that theme of evolution, let’s take a look at the poll from last week. I asked the followers: “Which would you like to see The Revolution do with regard to the weekly reviews?” The results were as follows:

“I don’t care if you loved the issue or hated it. Give us detailed and lengthy reviews for whatever comic books you choose to review regardless of the score.” 59% (223 votes)

“Put a poll up every Monday and let us vote on which comic books from that week are to get detailed and lengthy reviews. The top four issues in the poll will get the detailed reviews regardless if you liked them or not.” 20% (75 votes)

“Only give detailed and lengthy reviews to comic books that receive a 7 or higher score. Any issue that scores a 6 or less should get a Bunker Bulletin only.” 19% (74 votes)

The response from the followers was overwhelmingly in favor of me keeping The Revolution’s format the same. It just was not even close. I appreciate the vote of confidence from the majority of the followers of The Revolution. However, I figured that I could still make a few small tweaks that might satisfy all of the followers no matter how you voted.

We got some suggestions that The Revolution always review big events. We also got suggestions asking that The Revolution pick some titles that we will always review in order to create running narratives about those titles. Therefore, The Revolution will always review any and all big events. The Revolution will also have “core” titles that we will always try and review.

The Marvel core titles will be New Avengers, Dark Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Captain America, Uncanny X-Men, Amazing Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. The DC core titles will be Justice League of America, Justice Society of America, Batman, Superman and Green Lantern. We will then mix in reviews for various other titles each week depending on what appeals to us.

The Revolution will also install a relegation system like in European soccer.  If a non-core title receives two straight negative reviews then it will be dropped. In order for a title to get promoted back into the rotation for a review it will have to deliver two straight good issues.

The Revolution will also install a system where Jim and I trade off titles in the case of a negative review. If I give an issue a negative review then Jim will handle the review of the next issue of that title. And vice versa. This way we will provide more than one view of a title that got a negative review from one of us. Maybe Jim and I will agree that the title is poor like we have in the past with Invincible Iron Man. Maybe not. Either way, giving more than one view to a title is a good idea and it prevents the appearance that either Jim or I am simply picking on a certain title.

Another suggestion that was submitted by numerous followers was for us to make the Bunker Bulletins longer and more detailed. My extremely detailed style of review appears to be what followers enjoy. So, Jim has decided to go ahead and start beefing up the Bunker Bulletins. Now, they will not be quite as long and as detailed as my review, because quite simply, not many people enjoy writing that style of review. But, Jim will be providing much more detail in his Bunker Bulletins and they will be longer reviews from now on.

I hope that everyone is satisfied with the small modifications that we are making to The Revolution. Thanks for all of the input.

  1. Happy 3rd B-day! I know that you and the leaders of the Revolution will continue to provide high quality, no BS reviews, which given these tough economic times and the possibility of rising comic prices, has become very important when picking and choosing. Again, congrats on making it to 3 years!

  2. Happy birthday indeed. I’ve been reading the site for about a year now and am always mightily impressed. You give enough info and details but never too much.

I kind of hate you though as you have made me pick up several titles–War of Kings most recently– that I wouldn’t have bothered with otherwise. 😉

Oh, and much as I dig the site– not least for the law of positivity thingy– please please please PLEASE, never call it “soccer”.

    It’s football. Pure and simple.

More reviews of graphic novels would be cool too.

  3. Happy B-Day!

I voted for the poll on a regular basis to vote on which titles to read. Since I don’t have any interest in the “mainstream” stuff, anything with “Avengers” in the title and anything related to Superman or Batman, will automatically get me to pass over it.

The Battle for the Cowl, however, has me slightly interested, as does the Blackest Night stuff, so I won’t be forgoing all mainstream stuff. I’d like to see more independent stuff as I’m trying to figure out what to purchase.

  4. Feliz cumpleaños Revolucionarios!

Un gran saludo desde Argentina para los cuatro, che, y que cumplan varios años más!

I remember I got here about a year ago, thanks to Google Images, looking for pictures of Vulcan. It’s now one of the first sites I check when I turn on the computer.

Paraphrasing Reds8n, yeah, please PLEASE don’t call it soccer. It’s fútbol, carajo!

I’m glad you took my relegation idea! I hope it turns out to be a good system for The Revolution.

Una vez más, un gran saludo!
    Feliz cumpleaños!

  5. Feliz tercer cumpleaños a la Revolución!!!

It is always a pleasure to read a well prepared review, regardless whether we agree or not with the opinions, because it shows that is possible to have intelligent discussion about comics. And nothing is better that a good chat about a shared hobby.

So here is a toast for many more years. =)

  6. Wow, three years already. Dude I have wasted a lot of time at work. So congrats. And if you could change the name to Rokk’s Data Research Services, it would really help when my boss catchs me reading you.
