September 2024 Comic Book Sales Rankings

It is time to check out the September 2024 comic book sales rankings. Things are getting murkier in terms of actual unit numbers. So, we will have to settle with going to ICv2 for their Top 200 sales rankings. It is not as good as actual unit numbers, but we have to work with what we get.

Remember that the Top 200 sales rankings are based on sales tracked at point-of-sale by the ComicHub system at over 125 local comic book shops selling American comics. These sales rankings represent sales to consumers by local comic shops.

The data for the September 2024 comic book sales rankings was collected over a five-week period, from September 1, 2024, to October 5, 2024.

September 2024 Comic Book Sales Rankings

The Battle for the Top 10

Marvel Comics placed seven comics in the Top 10. Month-over-month sales were flat, compared to the seven comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 10 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics had six comics in the Top 10 in September 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Marvel Comics had six comics in the Top 10 in September 2022.

DC Comics placed three comics in the Top 10. Month-over-month sales were up from the two comics that DC Comics had in the Top 10 in August 2024. However, year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had four comics in the Top 10 in September 2023. Numbers were also down from two years ago as DC Comics had four comics in the Top 10 in September 2022.

DC All-In Special #1 had a strong debut scoring the number 8 spot. This was one of the few titles that stood up to the onslaught of new X-Men titles that have firehosed the comic market.

Image Comics placed zero comics in the Top 10. Month-over-month sales were down from the one comic that Image Comics had in the Top 10 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Image Comics had zero comics in the Top 10 in September 2023. Numbers were also flat from two years ago as Image Comics had zero comics in the Top 10 in September 2022.

This is a big deal. This is the first time in a year that Image Comics has not been able to slot a Hasbro franchise title in the Top 10. The main culprit for this is Marvel Comics’ overwhelming the comic market with an insane number of new X-Men franchise titles.

The Battle for the Top 25

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 11-25 range typically sell in the 65,000 to 50,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed sixteen comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were down from the nineteen comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 25 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics had sixteen comics in the Top 25 in September 2023. Numbers were also flat from two years ago as Marvel Comics had sixteen comics in the Top 25 in September 2022.

DC Comics placed seven comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were up from the four comics that DC Comics had in the Top 25 in August 2024. However, year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had nine comics in the Top 25 in September 2023. Numbers were flat from two years ago as DC Comics had seven comics in the Top 25 in September 2022.

Image Comics placed one comic in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were down from the two comics that Image Comics had in the Top 25 in August 2024. However, year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had zero comics in the Top 25 in September 2023. Numbers were flat from two years ago as Image Comics had one comic in the Top 25 in September 2022.

The sole comic for Image Comics in the Top 25 was from the Hasbro franchise. There were no G.I. Joe titles in the Top 25. This is the first time since Image Comics got the G.I. Joe license that they have been blanked in the Top 25.

IDW Publishing placed one comic in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were up from the zero comics that IDW Publishing had in the Top 25 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as IDW Publishing had zero comics in the Top 25 in September 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as IDW Publishing had zero comics in the Top 25 in September 2022.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #2 fell from the number 2 spot to the number 13 spot. That is not bad given the insane amount of new X-Men franchise titles hitting the market this month.

The Battle for the Top 50

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 26-50 range typically sell in the 49,000 to 30,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed thirty-three comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were down from the thirty-five comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 50 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics had thirty-one comics in the Top 50 in September 2023. Numbers were also up from two years ago as Marvel Comics had thirty-two comics in the Top 50 in September 2022.

Daredevil #13 ticked up from the number 31 spot to the number 29 spot. Saladin Ahmed’s Daredevil seems doomed to remain outside of the Top 25 going forward. The last time Daredevil was in the Top 25 was when Daredevil #5 took the number 16 spot back in January 2024. While there is no shame in being a consistent Top 50 seller, it is still a departure from Daredevil being a consistent Top 10 and Top 25 title under the prior creative teams.

Vengeance of the Moon Knight #9 fell from the number 44 spot to the number 50 spot. This title continues to bob around the bottom of the Top 50.

DC Comics placed ten comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were up from the nine comics that DC Comics had in the Top 50 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had seventeen comics in the Top 50 in September 2023. Numbers were down from two years ago as DC Comics had thirteen comics in the Top 50 in September 2022.

Three of Image Comics’ Top 50 issues were from the Hasbro franchise. One of the issues was from the Ghost Machine franchise. The fifth title was Saga #69 which took the number 48 spot.

Oni Press placed zero comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were down from the one comic that Oni Press had in the Top 50 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Oni Press had zero comics in the Top 50 in September 2023. Numbers were flat from two years ago as Oni Press had zero comics in the Top 50 in September 2022.

IDW Publishing placed one comic in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were flat from the one comics that IDW Publishing had in the Top 50 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as IDW Publishing had zero comics in the Top 50 in September 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as IDW Publishing had zero comics in the Top 50 in September 2022.

BOOM! Studios placed one comic in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were up from the zero comics that BOOM! Studios had in the Top 50 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were flat as BOOM! Studios had one comic in the Top 50 in September 2023. Numbers were down from two years ago as BOOM! Studios had two comics in the Top 50 in September 2022.

The Battle for the Top 75

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 51-75 range typically sell in the 29,000 to 25,000 unit range.

Numbers were up from two years ago as Marvel Comics had forty-three comics in the Top 75 in September 2022.

DC Comics placed seventeen comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were flat, compared to the seventeen comics that DC Comics had in the Top 75 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had twenty-four comics in the Top 75 in September 2023. Numbers were down from two years ago as DC Comics had twenty-one comics in the Top 75 in September 2022.

Image Comics placed nine comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were up from the eight comics that Image Comics had in the Top 75 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had four comics in the Top 75 in September 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Image Comics had eight comics in the Top 75 in September 2022.

Seven of Image Comics’ nine Top 75 issues came from the Hasbro franchise, the Universal Monster franchise, the Ghost Machine franchise, and the Spawn franchise. These lucrative franchises continue to power all of Image Comics’ sales success.

Moon is Following Us #1 debuted at the number 58 spot. This ten-issue mini-series is from Daniel Warren Johnson. Given this debut number, I would imagine that this mini-series drops into the Dead Titles Walking category by next month.

Dynamite Entertainment placed one comic in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were flat from the one comic that Dynamite Entertainment had in the Top 75 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as Dynamite Entertainment had zero comics in the Top 75 in September 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Dynamite Entertainment had zero comics in the Top 75 in September 2022.

Space Ghost #5 fell from the number 56 spot to the number 74 spot. This is impressive. I love Space Ghost, but I did not expect this title to still be in the Top 75 by its fifth issue.

IDW Publishing placed one comic in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were down from the two comics that IDW Publishing had in the Top 75 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were up as IDW Publishing had zero comics in the Top 75 in September 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as IDW Publishing had zero comics in the Top 75 in September 2022.

BOOM! Studios placed one comic in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were up from the zero comics that BOOM! Studios had in the Top 75 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were flat as BOOM! Studios had one comic in the Top 75 in September 2023. Numbers were down from two years ago as BOOM! Studios had three comics in the Top 75 in September 2022.

Oni Press placed zero comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were down from the one comic that Oni Press had in the Top 75 in April 2024. The Battle for the Top 100

Numbers were up from two years ago as Image Comics had eight comics in the Top 100 in September 2022.

Nine of Image Comics’ twelve Top 100 issues came from the Hasbro franchise, the Universal Monster franchise, the Ghost Machine franchise, and the Spawn franchise.

Dynamite Entertainment placed one comic in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were down from the three comics that Dynamite Entertainment had in the Top 100 in August 2024. EC Epitaphs from the Abyss #3 fell from the number 78 spot to the number 95 spot. This five-issue mini-series is going to have to rally to finish inside the Top 100.

EC Cruel Universe #2 plummeted from the number 34 spot to the number 100 spot. This five-issue mini-series should be outside of the Top 100 by the next issue.

Titan Comics had one comic in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were up from the zero comics that Titan Comics had in the Top 100 in August 2024. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Titan Comics had one comic in the Top 100 in September 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Titan Comics had zero comics in the Top 100 in September 2022.

The Joshua Williamson Award For The Writer With The Most Titles In The Top 50

Four writers had two issues in the Top 50 from the same title.

Chip Zdarsky had two issues with Batman #152 at the number 6 spot and Batman #153 at the number 20 spot.

Gail Simone had two issues with Uncanny X-Men #2 at the number 2 spot and Uncanny X-Men #3 at the number 9 spot.

Zeb Wells had two issues with Amazing Spider-Man #57 at the number 12 spot and Amazing Spider-Man #58 at the number 19 spot.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson had two issues with Incredible Hulk #16 at the number 33 spot and Incredible Hulk #17 at the number 39 spot.

Three writers had two issues in the Top 50 from different titles.

Saladin Ahmed had two issues with Wolverine #1 at the number 1 spot and Daredevil #13 at the number 29 spot.

Al Ewing had two issues with Venom War #2 at the number 18 spot and Immortal Thor #15 at the number 36 spot.

Joshua Williamson had two issues with DC All-In Special #1 at the number 8 spot and Superman #18 at the number 28 spot.

Two writers had three issues in the Top 50 from different titles.

Mark Waid had three issues from two different titles: Absolute Power #3 at the number 10 spot, Absolute Power #4 at the number 21 spot, and Batman Superman World’s Finest #31 at the number 46 spot.

Jonathan Hickman had three issues from three different titles: Ultimate Spider-Man #9 at the number 3 spot, Wolverine: Revenge – Red Band #2 at the number 22 spot, and Aliens Vs. Avengers #1 at the number 30 spot.

However, one writer ruled over all with a whopping five issues from three different titles!

Jed MacKay had five issues with X-Men #4 at the number 7 spot, X-Men #5 at the number 17 spot, Avengers #18 at the number 27 spot, X-Men #3 at the number 35 spot, and Vengeance of the Moon Knight #9 at the number 50 spot.

Therefore, the winner of the Joshua Williamson Award for September 2024 is…Jed MacKay! Mr. MacKay is no stranger to winning this award and gets the honor once again.

Battle of the Franchises

The X-Men franchise took first place with five comics in the Top 10, ten comics in the Top 25, and thirteen comics in the Top 50.

The Avengers franchise took second place with one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and nine comics in the Top 50.

The Spider-Man franchise took third place with one comic in the Top 10, four comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50.

The Ultimate Universe took fourth place with two comics in the Top 10, four comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50.

The Batman franchise took fifth place with one comic in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50.

This battle highlights the ongoing problem that DC Comics has had. Out of the Top 5 franchises, only one is from DC Comics. In addition, the Batman franchise continues to cool off as DC Comics remains overreliant on Bruce Wayne to power its sales.

Unranked: The Creeping Below #1 (BOOM! Studios)

As usual, we will address most of these debut issues in their respective franchise sections below. However, there is one that we will touch on at this point.

DC Horror Presents Creature Commandos #1 scored an embarrassingly awful debut with the number 200 spot. This six-issue limited series is almost a lock to be unranked with just the second issue. David Dastmalchian is the writer for this mini-series. While Dastmalchian is an excellent actor, what he is not is a mainstream superhero comic book writer. Once again, the weird obsession that both DC Comics and Marvel Comics have for hiring Hollywood talent to write comics completely blows up in DC Comics’ face.

Big Events

Venom War

18 Venom War #2 (Venom War)

31 Venom #37 (Venom War)

55 Venom War: Wolverine #1 (Venom War)

62 Venom War #3 (Venom War)

88 Venom War: Deadpool #1 (Venom War)

89 Venom War: Spider-Man #2 (Venom War)

132 Venom War: Carnage #2 (Venom War)

133 Venom War: Venomous #2 (Venom War)

150 Venom War: Lethal Protectors #1 (Venom War)

177 Venom War: Spider-Man #3 (Venom War)

180 Venom War Zombiotes #2 (Venom War)

181 Venom War Daredevil #1 (Venom War)

191 Venom War #1 (Venom War) (Resolicitation)

Venom War had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50. This was worse than in August 2024 when Venom War had one comic in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50.

Venom War #2 fell from the number 5 spot to the number 18 spot. Venom War #3 fell from the number 18 spot to the number 62 spot. It is tough when a title ships two issues in the same sales period. I expect Venom War #4 to rebound into the Top 50 next month.

Venom War: Wolverine #1 debuted poorly at the number 55 spot. This three-issue limited series is going to have to fight to stay in the Top 75.

Venom War: Deadpool #1 had an awful debut taking the number 88 spot. This three-issue mini-series had a tough road ahead to finish outside the Dead Titles Walking category.

Venom War: Spider-Man #2 plummeted from the number 45 spot to the number 89 spot. This is not a surprise given the weak debut number. Jackson Lanzig and Collin Kelly have yet another sales failure despite being paired up with the human ATM known as Peter Parker.

Venom War: Spider-Man #3 crashed and burned falling from the number 89 spot to the number 177 spot. No doubt that it is tough shipping two issues in the same sale period, but Venom War: Spider-Man is a lock to conclude in the Dead Titles Walking category with the fourth and final issue.

Venom War: Carnage #2 dropped from the number 73 spot to the number 132 spot. Given the bad debut number, I figured that this would happen. Torunn Grømbekk failed to get readers excited about this Venom War tie-in mini-series. This title is a lock to finish in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Venom War: Venomous #2 fell from the number 88 spot to the number 133 spot. Erica Schultz continues to have no sales success. Readers certainly were not enticed by the prospect of a Venomized Black Widow. This three-issue mini-series will conclude as a Dead Title Walking.

Venom War: Lethal Protectors #1 had a brutal debut at the number 150 spot. Wow. We all saw this coming. Sabir Pirzada is the writer and has never had any sales success. Once again, hiring a Hollywood screenwriter to pen a mainstream superhero comic book blows up in Marvel Comics’ face. Yet, like a mindless idiot, Marvel Comics editorial will continue to pull out this same trick in the future. The big question is if this three-issue mini-series will be ranked in the Top 200.

Venom War Zombiotes #2 plummeted from the number 126 spot to the number 180 spot. This four-issue mini-series has a good chance of concluding outside the Top 200. Cavan Scott continues his trend of having no sales success.

Venom War Daredevil #1 had a godawful debut barely even getting ranked and taking the number 181 spot. What an embarrassing debut. Nobody was interested in Christopher Condon’s one-shot issue.

The main Venom War title has been a solid seller. But, the Venom War mini-series have all been unmitigated disasters. The biggest reason for that is due to Marvel Comics hiring an awful collection of writers for the Venom War mini-series.

Absolute Power

6 Batman #152 (Absolute Power)

10 Absolute Power #3 (Of 4)

21 Absolute Power #4 (Of 4)

23 Wonder Woman #13 (Absolute Power)

28 Superman #18 (Absolute Power)

54 Green Lantern #15 (Absolute Power)

72 Absolute Power Task Force VII #6 (Of 7)

83 Absolute Power Super Son #1 (One-Shot)

93 Absolute Power Task Force VII #7 (Of 7)

122 Green Arrow #16 (Absolute Power)

152 Absolute Power Origins #3 (Of 3)

Absolute Power had one comic in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50. This was worse in the Top 10 but flat in the Top 25 and Top 50 compared to August 2024 when Absolute Power had two comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50.

Absolute Power #3 fell from the number 7 spot to the number 10 spot. Absolute Power #4 fell from the number 10 spot to the number 21 spot. It is embarrassing when the main big event title gets outsold by a tie-in issue.

Still, Absolute Power was a good selling big event for DC Comics. It would have been more impressive is all four issues managed to finish in the Top 10. But, slotting two of the four issues in the Top 10 is still a good accomplishment.

Absolute Power Task Force VII #6 bounced up from the number 107 spot to the number 72 spot. Absolute Power Task Force VII #7 fell from the number 72 spot to the number 93 spot. This tie-in title was a sales disappointment. But, at least it finished outside of the Dead Titles Walking category.

Absolute Power Origins #3 fell from the number 130 spot to the number 152 spot. With this issue, this mini-series concludes. Nobody was interested in an origin story of Amanda Waller from John Ridley. Once again, a Hollywood screenwriter finds no success writing a mainstream superhero comic.

Hasbro Franchise

11 Transformers #12

26 Scarlett #4 (Of 5)

37 Destro #4 (Of 5)

109 GI Joe A Real American Hero #310

155 Void Rivals #12 (Resolicitation)

174 Transformers #11 (Resolicitation)

176 Transformers #1 40th Anniversary Edition (One-Shot)

The Hasbro franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50. This was worse in the Top 10 and Top 25 but flat in the Top 50 compared to August 2024 when the Hasbro franchise had one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50.

Transformers #12 dipped from the number 8 spot to the number 11 spot. This is the first time that Transformers has sold outside of the Top 10. Even this sales juggernaut could not withstand the merciless onslaught of new X-Men franchise titles.

Scarlett #4 dipped from the number 22 spot to the number 26 spot. It appears that Scarlett will not conclude her five-issue mini-series in the Top 25.

Destro #4 ticked down from the number 32 spot to the number 37 spot. This five-issue mini-series will also not conclude in the Top 25.

Scarlett and Destro seem set to conclude with lower rankings than Joshua Williamson’s Cobra Commander and Duke titles.

GI Joe A Real American Hero #310 dropped from the number 98 spot to the number 109 spot. This is the first time that any of the Hasbro franchise titles from Image Comics have finished in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Spawn Franchise

70 Spawn #356

85 Spawn Violator #1 (Of 6)

108 Gunslinger Spawn #35

165 Spawn Scorched #33

188 Spawn #357

192 Spawn Rat City #6

Unranked: King Spawn #38

Unranked: Misery #3

Unranked: Sam and Twitch: Case Files #6

Unranked: Spawn Kills Every Spawn #3

The Spawn franchise had zero comics in the Top 50. This was the same as in August 2024 when the Spawn franchise had zero comics in the Top 50.

Spawn #356 bounced up from the number 119 spot to the number 70 spot. Spawn #357 fell from the number 70 spot to the number 188 spot. Shipping two issues in this sales period hurt Spawn. I would expect a nice rebound with the next issue.

Spawn Violator #1 had a bad debut coming in at the number 85 spot. This six-issue mini-series should be a Dead Title Walking by next month.

Gunslinger Spawn #35 fell from the number 89 spot to the number 108 spot. This is lower than we normally see this title.

Spawn Scorched #33 fell from the number 121 spot to the number 165 spot. This is also lower than we normally see for this title.

Spawn Rat City #6 plummeted from the number 144 spot to the number 192 spot. This title is at risk of being unranked with the next issue. I remain mystified as to why Erica Schultz keeps getting hired to write superhero comic books.

King Spawn #38 fell from the number 161 spot and right out of the rankings to end up unranked. This is the first time this title has gone unranked.

Misery #3 fell from the number 183 spot and right out of the rankings to end up unranked. This mini-series was a bad idea and has failed to attract any readers.

Sam and Twitch: Case Files #6 was unranked for a third straight month. This title has been a total sales dud.

Spawn Kills Every Spawn #3 fell from the number 195 spot and out of the rankings to end up unranked. This five-issue mini-series is a sales disaster.

Ghost Machine Titles

45 Rook Exodus #5

67 Geiger #6

142 Redcoat #6

Ghost Machine had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50. This was better than August 2024 when Ghost Machine had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and zero comics in the Top 50.

Rook Exodus #5 ticked up from the number 49 spot to the number 45 spot. Rook Exodus continues to be the gem of the Ghost Machine titles.

Geiger #6 fell from the number 53 spot to the number 67 spot.

Redcoat #6 fell from the number 75 spot to the number 142 spot. This is the biggest drop we have seen this title take to this point.

Star Wars Franchise

40 Star Wars: Darth Vader #50 (Marvel Comics)

44 Star Wars #50 (Marvel Comics)

87 Star Wars: The Acolyte – Kelnacca #1 (Marvel Comics)

147 Star Wars: Inquisitors #3 (Marvel Comics)

149 Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku #1 Insurgency Rising (Marvel Comics)

178 Star Wars: Ahsoka #3 (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: Star Wars: Inquisitors #4 (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Crash and Burn #1 (Dark Horse Comics)

Unranked: Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Echoes of Fear #1 (Dark Horse Comics)

Unranked: Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #10 (Dark Horse Comics)

The Star Wars franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50. This was better than August 2024 when the Star Wars franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and zero comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as the Star Wars franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50 in September 2023.

Numbers were down from two years ago as the Star Wars franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50 in September 2022.

Star Wars: Darth Vader #50 climbed from the number 64 spot to the number 40 spot. With this issue, this title concludes.

Star Wars #50 climbed from the number 90 spot to the number 44 spot. With this issue, this title concludes.

Star Wars: The Acolyte – Kelnacca #1 had an awful debut taking the number 87 spot. This is unsurprising given that The Acolyte TV show was a ratings disaster. It also did not help that Cavan Scott is the writer and this novelist has never had any success in the world of mainstream comic books. This five-issue mini-series should be in the Dead Titles Walking category with just the second issue.

Star Wars: Inquisitors #3 fell from the number 115 spot to the number 147 spot. Star Wars: Inquisitors #4 fell from the number 147 spot and right out of the Top 200 and ended up unranked. With this issue, this four-issue mini-series comes to a merciful end.

Star Wars: Inquisitors was another total sales failure from Rodney Barnes. I am unsure why Marvel Comics keeps jamming this square peg in a round hole with Barnes.

Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku #1 Insurgency Rising had a horrendous debut, coming in at number 149. Not too many readers were interested in what Alex Segura had to offer with this issue. This four-issue mini-series is already dead on arrival. This title is going to struggle to remain ranked in the Top 200.

Star Wars: Ahsoka #3 plummeted from the number 134 spot to the number 178 spot. Remember that Star Wars: Ahsoka #1 debuted at the number 11 spot! What a breathtaking fall in the rankings. Again, Rodney Barnes is the writer of this title and the result is zero consumer interest.

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Crash and Burn #1 was an appropriately named title as the debut issue crashed and burned and failed to even make the Top 200 and went unranked. This one-shot from Daniel José Older continues Older’s streak of having no sales success in mainstream comics.

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Echoes of Fear #1 had a disastrous debut failing to even make the Top 200 and going unranked. This four-issue mini-series from George Mann is already dead and buried.

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #10 failed to make the Top 200 and was unranked. Readers continue to have no interest in this title from Daniel José Older.

This is a hugely pivotal moment for the Star Wars franchise. The only two titles that had any shot of making the Top 50 are ending with their fiftieth issues this month. The rest of the Star Wars titles are complete sales failures. Every new Star Wars title from Marvel Comics and Dark Horse Comics dies right out of the gate. The High Republic initiative continues to be a complete sales failure. Nobody outside of the Lucasfilm story group finds it compelling.

I am unsure where the Star Wars franchise goes from here. And given the lack of success I have little confidence in Marvel Comics or the Lucasfilm story group.

Unranked: Spider-Man: Homeroom Heroes #1

The Spider-Man franchise had one comic in the Top 10, four comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50. This was worse than in August 2024 when the Spider-Man franchise had three comics in the Top 10, six comics in the Top 25, and eleven comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as the Spider-Man franchise had three comics in the Top 10, four comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50 in September 2023.

Numbers were down from two years ago as the Spider-Man franchise had two comics in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and six comics in the Top 50 in September 2022.

Sales were down across the board compared to a month ago, a year ago, and two years ago. The Spider-Man franchise appears to be cooling off as the X-Men franchise gets white hot.

Let’s start with the man who stirs the drink for the Spider-Man franchise: Peter Parker.

Amazing Spider-Man #57 took the number 12 spot and Amazing Spider-Man #58 took the number 19 spot. This was better than last month when the two issues of Amazing Spider-Man took the number 12 and 29 spots.

Spider-Man: Homeroom Heroes #1 had an abysmal debut failing to make the Top 200 and ending up unranked.

Spectacular Spider-Men #7 crashed from the number 26 spot to the number 63 spot. This is close to the number 69 ranking this title had in July 2024.

Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood #2 plummeted from the number 9 spot to the number 64 spot. That is a massive drop and does not portend good things for this four-issue mini-series.

Spider-Man Reign 2 #3 fell from the number 46 spot to the number 92 spot. This four-issue mini-series appears doomed to conclude in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Let’s hop over to the knock-off Spider-Men.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #24 ticked up from the number 66 spot to the number 61 spot. This is the second consecutive month this title has climbed in the rankings. That is good news. However, this is still far off the pace from July 2024 when this title scored the number 33 spot.

Spider-Society #2 collapsed in a death spiral falling from the number 20 spot to the number 104 spot. Readers were not impressed with what Alex Segura delivered in this title. This four-issue mini-series is a lock to conclude in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Chasm: Curse of Kaine #2 dropped from the number 133 spot to the number 198 spot. This was expected given the terrible debut number for this title. Steve Foxe will have a tough time keeping this four-issue mini-series from concluding unranked.

Spider-Boy #11 bounced up from the number 100 spot to the number 77 spot. This is about where we expect to see this title.

Spider-Boy Annual #1 took the number 170 spot. Not many people were interested in what Derek Landy and Steve Foxe were serving up with this issue.

Let’s hop over to the Venomverse.

Venom #37 climbed from the number 43 spot to the number 31 spot. This is about where we expect to see this title.

Kid Venom #2 crashed and burned, falling from the number 17 spot to the number 118 spot. Readers must not have been intrigued enough to come back for more after that debut issue.

Venomverse Reborn #4 ticked up from the number 141 spot to the number 136 spot. With this issue, this mini-series has concluded. This title was a total sales bust.

Venom: Separation Anxiety #5 ticked up from the number 154 spot to the number 153 spot. With this issue, this mini-series has concluded. This was another sales failure for Marvel Comics.

Let’s wrap things up with the ladies of the Spider-Man franchise.

Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #5 climbed up from the number 104 spot to the number 68 spot. Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #6 then plummeted from the number 68 spot to the number 161 spot. This title has fluctuated wildly over the past few months. This title will have a tough time escaping the Dead Titles Walking category over the next few issues.

X-Men Franchise

141 X-Men #2 (Resolicitation)

146 NYX #2 (Resolicitation)

157 Wolverine: Revenge – Red Band #1 (Resolicitation)

Unranked: Wolverine: Deep Cut #4

The X-Men franchise had five comics in the Top 10, ten comics in the Top 25, and thirteen comics in the Top 50. This was better than August 2024 when the X-Men franchise had three comics in the Top 10, seven comics in the Top 25, and twelve comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were up as the X-Men franchise had three comics in the Top 10, eight comics in the Top 25, and ten comics in the Top 50 in September 2023.

Numbers were up from two years ago as the X-Men franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50 in September 2022.

Uncanny X-Men #2 dipped from the number 1 spot to the number 2 spot. Wow. That is amazing. Except for Amazing Spider-Man and Batman, there is no other brand as powerful as Uncanny X-Men.

Uncanny X-Men #3 fell from the number 2 spot to the number 8 spot. That is incredible. To ship two issues in one sales period and get both into the Top 10 is insane.

Exceptional X-Men #1 had an incredible debut taking the number 4 spot. I have no faith in this comic since the writer is Eve Ewing. Ewing is a sociology professor at the University of Chicago. I am unsure why Marvel Comics thinks this makes Ewing qualified to write mainstream superhero comic books. Up to this point, Ewing has had nothing but one sales disaster after the next. Maybe Exceptional X-Men will be her first hit? We shall see.

X-Men #4 climbed from the number 15 spot to the number 7 spot. X-Men #5 fell from the number 7 spot to the number 17 spot. This is also an impressive showing for shipping two issues in the same sales period. Also impressive is that the resolicitation for last month’s X-Men #3 took the number 35 spot! Phenomenal!

X-Factor #2 fell from the number 11 spot to the number 41 spot. This was no surprise. Mark Russell is the writer and he has never had any sales success.

X-Force #3 ticked down from the number 50 spot to the number 51 spot. This is a positive sign for this title! Yeah, X-Force had a monster drop between the first and second issues. But, to largely come in at the same place in the rankings between the second and third issues indicates that this title may have found its happy place in the rankings. We shall see if X-Force can remain a consistent Top 75 seller over the next few months.

NYX #3 ticked down from the number 51 spot to the number 52 spot. This is also a positive sign for yet another X-Men franchise title. Like X-Force, NYX had a massive drop between the first and second issues. However, barely moving down in the rankings between the second and third issue is good news for this young title.

The next few months will be pivotal as NYX has a chance to be a consistent Top 75 seller. I am not betting on it since this is a Jackson Lanzig and Collin Kelly title and those titles always fail in the sales rankings. But, there is always a first time for everything!

Wolverine #1 had a monster debut, curb-stomping all rivals on its way to taking the number 1 spot. Saladin Ahmed enjoys the most sales success he has ever had with this issue. While Ahmed has struggled to enjoy sustained sales during his career, I think the power of Wolverine will keep this title a consistent Top 25 seller.

Wolverine: Revenge – Red Band #2 fell from the number 13 spot to the number 22 spot. Wolverine: Revenge #2 fell from the number 10 spot to the number 57 spot. This is a larger drop than I expected given the strong debut number, Hickman as the writer, and the Wolverine franchise power. It is also interesting that the regular version of Wolverine: Revenge outsold the Red Band issue with the debut issue, but the two flip-flopped with the second issue.

Wolverine: Deep Cut #3 fell from the number 92 spot to the number 134 spot. Wolverine: Deep Cut #4 fell out of the Top 200 rankings and was unranked. This four-issue mini-series was a sales failure for Marvel Comics.

Deadpool #6 ticked down from the number 36 spot to the number 38 spot. Deadpool #7 fell from the number 38 spot to the number 56 spot. Cody Ziglar continues to struggle to return Deadpool to the Top 25 where it was in June 2024.

Deadpool Team-Up #2 crashed and burned falling from the number 33 spot to the number 127 spot. Welp. I guess the power of Rob Liefeld has dulled a bit since the 1990s. This five-issue mini-series seems doomed to conclude in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Dazzler #1 had an excellent debut taking the number 15 spot. Having said that, I am going to temper my enthusiasm. Marvel Comics’ female lead titles have a long history of getting splashy debut numbers and cratering in the sales rankings quickly. We shall see if Jason Loo can score his first big sales hit title.

Storm #1 had a solid debut taking the number 25 spot. The writer is Murewa Ayodele whom I have never heard of before. I have examined Storm’s sales history before and it is not great. Given the average debut number, I think this new Storm title is going to quickly drop out of the Top 50.

It is fascinating to see that Dazzler #1 outsold Storm #1. That is something I would have never bet on happening. Storm is a far more popular character with a much better pedigree. Interesting times.

Phoenix #3 dropped from the number 35 spot to the number 59 spot. Keep in mind that Phoenix #1 scored the number 7 spot! I predicted that Phoenix would score an impressive debut and then quickly drop out of the Top 50 and that is exactly what happened. This is what you should expect from any title written by Stephanie Phillips.

Avengers Franchise

5 Ultimates #4

24 Ultimate Black Panther #8

123 Get Fury #5

129 Immortal Thor #16

160 Predator Vs. Black Panther #1 (Resolicitation)

Unranked: Get Fury #6

Unranked: Ultraman X Avengers #2

The Avengers franchise had one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and nine comics in the Top 50. This was better than in August 2024 when the Avengers franchise had one comic in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were up as the Avengers franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50 in September 2023.

Numbers were up from two years ago as the Avengers franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50 in September 2022.

Avengers #18 fell from the number 16 spot to the number 27 spot. This ended two consecutive months of this title climbing up in the rankings. This also dropped the Avengers out of the Top 25 for the first time since June 2024.

Ultraman X Avengers #2 plummeted from the number 114 spot, right out of the Top 200, and ended up unranked. This was no surprise given the awful debut number last month.

Avengers Assemble #1 had a terrible debut at the number 49 spot. This is not a surprise. Steve Orlando is the writer and he rarely has sales success. On top of that, this title has a truly bizarre roster of characters. This five-issue mini-series is going to conclude in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Incredible Hulk #16 ticked down from the number 30 spot to the number 33 spot. Incredible Hulk #17 dropped from the number 33 spot to the number 39 spot. This is so impressive! To ship two issues in the same sales period and only have a six-spot difference between the two issues is amazing.

Marvel & Disney What If…? Donald Duck Became Thor #1 had a solid debut taking the number 34 spot. It is incredible how well all of these What If…? Donald Duck one-shots have performed! I will openly admit that I did not see this coming at all.

Immortal Thor #15 ticked up from the number 39 spot to the number 36 spot. Immortal Thor #16 fell from the number 36 spot to the number 129 spot. Shipping two issues in the same sales period is tough on a title like Immortal Thor which struggles to consistently sell in the Top 50. I am sure this title will rebound with the next issue.

Predator Vs. Black Panther #2 plummeted from the number 21 spot to the number 76 spot. This is a steeper drop in the rankings than I anticipated. It looks like it will be a struggle for this four-issue mini-series to conclude in the Top 100.

Captain America #13 climbed from the number 140 spot to the number 101 spot. JMS still cannot get this title out of the Dead Titles Walking category. I am not surprised to see JMS having little success on this title. I was never bullish on putting JMS on Captain America in the first place.

Get Fury #5 ticked down from the number 116 spot to the number 123 spot. Get Fury #6 fell out of the Top 200 and ended up unranked. With this issue, this mini-series has concluded. Get Fury ended up being a sales failure for Marvel Comics despite having a “big name” writer in Garth Ennis.

Scarlet Witch #4 fell from the number 84 spot to the number 105 spot. Keep in mind that Scarlet Witch #1 debuted at the number 22 spot. Steve Orlando has made Scarlet Witch a Dead Title Walking with just the fourth issue. Nobody should be surprised by this. It made zero sense that Marvel Comics editorial would cancel Orlando’s Scarlet Witch due to low sales only to roll out a new Scarlet Witch title by…Steve Orlando. I am unsure what result Marvel Comics editorial was expecting. It is like continually sticking your hand on a hot stove and being surprised that you get burned each time.

Fantastic Four Franchise

32 Fantastic Four #25

Unranked: Namor #3

The Fantastic Four franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50. This was flat compared to August 2024 when the Fantastic Four franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50.

Fantastic Four #25 climbed from the number 96 spot to the number 32 spot. This is the highest in the sales rankings since Fantastic Four #21 scored the number 29 spot in June 2024.

Namor #3 fell from the number 120 spot and right out of the Top 200 and ended up being unranked. Bwahahahaha!! Oh, I am sorry. Please excuse me. Keep in mind that Namor #1 debuted at the number 40 spot. It is practically unheard of for a title with a “big name” writer like Jason Aaron combined with a character that has a solid pedigree like Namor to be unranked by the third issue. Wow. That is phenomenal. This is something that rarely happens this quickly.

What a damning indictment on Marvel Comics’ decision to promote Aaron’s Namor title by stating that it was going to be like Aaron’s handling of the Punisher. Marvel Comics editorial are a clueless bunch, no doubt. Editorial views Aaron’s Punisher as wonderful. That is why editorial specifically used Aaron’s Punisher to promote the new Namor title.

But, the reality is that readers hated Aaron’s butchering of Frank Castle. This complete rejection of Aaron’s Namor is proof of readers saying that they have no interest in getting any more of that same style of storytelling from Aaron with Namor. The market speaks. Good job by the consumer. Of course, Marvel Comics editorial are largely oblivious and out of touch with their consumers so they won’t learn anything from this.

53 Ultimate Spider-Man #8 (Resolicitation)

79 Ultimate Black Panther #9

82 Ultimate X-Men #6 (Resolicitation)

190 Ultimate Spider-Man #7 (Resolicitation)

The Ultimate Universe had two comics in the Top 10, four comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50. This was worse than in August 2024 when the Ultimate Universe had two comics in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50.

Ultimate Spider-Man #9 ticked down from the number 2 spot to the number 3 spot. This title remains the crown jewel of the Ultimate Universe. This is also the only Ultimate Universe title to place two resolicitated issues in the Top 200.

Ultimates #4 ticked up from the number 6 spot to the number 5 spot. This is amazing. I did not expect Deniz Camp to roll out a total sales monster with this title. While I do not find this title particularly well-written, I love reading it. This is a bit of a train wreck that you cannot stop watching.

Ultimate X-Men #7 climbed from the number 24 spot to the number 14 spot. This was a nice rebound for this title. However, this is the second straight month that Ultimate X-Men has sold outside the Top 10. Perhaps once the rollout of all of the new X-Men franchise titles concludes Ultimate X-Men will be able to return to the Top 10.

Ultimate Black Panther #8 ticked down from the number 23 spot to the number 24 spot. Order has returned as Ultimate Black Panther is once again the lowest-selling Ultimate Universe title it has always been except for last month. Still, this is a testament to the awesome selling power of the Ultimate Universe franchise when the lowest-selling title is still in the Top 25! It is just incredible.

The Batman franchise had one comic in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50. This was worse than in August 2024 when the Batman franchise had one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50.

Numbers were down from two years ago as the Batman franchise had three comics in the Top 10, six comics in the Top 25, and eleven comics in the Top 50 in September 2022.

Let’s start with the Bruce Wayne titles.

Batman #152 dropped from the number 4 spot to the number 6 spot. Even amid the merciless onslaught of new X-Men franchise titles, Batman can weather the storm.

Batman #153 dropped from the number 6 spot to the number 20 spot. This is an impressive ranking for a title shipping two issues in the same sales period.

Batman the Long Halloween: The Last Halloween #1 had a nice debut taking the number 16 spot. This ten-issue mini-series encapsulates how DC Comics approaches comics. Bruce Wayne plus recycling an old popular storyline from decades ago.

Batman Superman World’s Finest #31 dipped from the number 41 spot to the number 46 spot. This title is such a dependable Top 50 title for DC Comics.

Detective Comics #1089 climbed from the number 79 spot to the number 65 spot. Dan Waters and Ram V continue to struggle to try and get Detective Comics back into the Top 50.

Batman Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age #4 plummeted from the number 34 spot to the number 69 spot. That was a much steeper drop in the rankings than I expected for this twelve-issue limited series.

Batman and Robin #13 fell from the number 80 spot to the number 103 spot. This title was selling in the Top 75 every month until June 2024. The past three months saw this title struggling to stay out of the Dead TItles Walking category. Well, the bottom finally fell out and this title has finally dropped out of the Top 100. The next few months will be pivotal to see if it can avoid becoming a consistent Dead Title Walking.

Dark Knights of Steel Allwinter #3 dropped from the number 77 spot to the number 107 spot. With just the third issue, this six-issue mini-series has become a Dead Title Walking.

Batman Day 2024 – Batman Elmer Fudd Special #1 had a poor debut at the number 113 spot.

Batman ’89 Echoes #4 plummeted from the number 73 spot to the number 119 spot. This six-issue mini-series is now a Dead Title Walking. This probably will not change before the conclusion of this mini-series.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold #17 fell from the number 199 spot and ended up unranked. This title had been on the verge of dropping out of the Top 200 over the past two months, so this was expected to happen. This anthology title has been a total miss with readers.

The Boy Wonder #5 fell from the number 109 spot to the number 135 spot. With this issue, this mini-series concludes. Juni Ba’s mini-series was a complete sales failure as it was a Dead Title Walking for the final three issues.

Let’s check out the ladies of the Batman franchise.

Poison Ivy #25 climbed from the number 164 spot to the number 84 spot. Poison Ivy #26 fell from the number 84 spot to the number 138 spot. I would not be surprised to see this title sneak back into the Top 100 with the next issue.

Catwoman #68 fell from the number 102 spot to the number 116 spot. With this issue, Tini Howard’s failed run as the writer ends as this title has been canceled with this issue.

Harley Quinn #43 fell from the number 128 spot to the number 182 spot. Tini Howard’s reign of terror concludes with this issue, as this title has been canceled.

After Tini Howard’s unpopular and incompetent handling of Catwoman and Harley Quinn, DC Comics has huge tasks to rebuild both characters.

Let’s look at the team titles of the Batman franchise.

Birds of Prey #13 climbed from the number 94 spot to the number 81 spot. Birds of Prey #14 fell from the number 81 spot to the number 159 spot. This title should creep back into the Top 100 with the next issue.

Outsiders #11 went from the number 194, dropped out of the rankings, and ended up unranked. With this issue, this limited series comes to an end. Outsiders was a Dead Title Walking by just the second issue. In fact, Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly did such an awful job with Outsiders that DC Comics decided to end this limited series one issue earlier than it was supposed to end. This was originally solicited as a twelve-issue limited series. This kind of embarrassing sales failure is what I expect from a title from Lanzing and Kelly.

Let’s wrap things up with the lone villain title.

Penguin #12 ticked up from the number 172 spot to the number 171 spot. With this issue, this limited series comes to a merciful end. Tom King’s Penguin was a Dead Title Walking by just the second issue. What a humiliating sales failure for DC Comics and one of their “big name” writers.

Superman Franchise

28 Superman #18 (Absolute Power)

46 Batman Superman World’s Finest #31

75 Action Comics #1069

83 Absolute Power Super Son #1 (One-Shot)

Unranked: Power Girl #13

Unranked: My Adventures with Superman #4

Unranked: My Adventures with Superman #5

The Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50. This was flat compared to August 2024 when the Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as the Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50 in September 2023.

However, numbers were up from two years ago as the Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50 in September 2022.

Superman #18 ticked down from the number 27 spot to the number 28 spot. This title continues to hold steady in the rankings.

Action Comics #1069 fell from the number 54 spot to the number 75 spot. This is the lowest in a long time.

My Adventures with Superman #4 dropped from the number 200 spot and was unranked. My Adventures with Superman #5 was also unranked. This mini-series from Josie Campbell has been an embarrassing sales failure as three of the five issues have been unranked. It is brutal editorial decisions that are just killing DC Comics.

Absolute Power Super Son #1 had a horrendous debut at the number 83 spot. I know that DC Editorial wants to make Jon Kent a thing, but it continues to not happen.

Power Girl #13 fell from the number 163 spot and out of the Top 200 to end up unranked. With Leah Williams as the writer, we all knew this title was destined to become unranked. I am surprised it took thirteen issues to accomplish this feat. Power Girl is such a wonderful characters. I hope that DC Comics switches out the writer rather than canceling Power Girl all together. Trust me, the problem is not Power Girl’s character.

Justice League Franchise

23 Wonder Woman #13 (Absolute Power)

43 Zatanna Bring Down the House #4 (Of 5)

54 Green Lantern #15 (Absolute Power)

71 Plastic Man No More #1 (Of 4)

78 Justice Society of America #11 (Of 12)

122 Green Arrow #16 (Absolute Power)

144 The Flash #13

154 Justice Society of America #12 (Of 12)

184 Plastic Man No More #2 (Of 4)

185 Zatanna Bring Down the House #3 (Of 5) (Resolicitation)

Unranked: Trinity Special: World’s Finest #1

The Justice League franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50. This was better than August 2024 when the Justice League franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as the Justice League franchise had one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50 in September 2023.

However, numbers were up from two years ago as the Justice League franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and zero comics in the Top 50 in September 2022.

Green Lantern #15 ticked up from the number 55 spot to the number 54 spot. This is the second consecutive month that this title has been unable to crack the Top 50.

Plastic Man No More #1 had an awful debut taking the number 71 spot. Plastic Man No More #2 fell from the number 71 spot to the number 184 spot. I have no faith in this four-issue mini-series. I do not think that Christopher Cantwell does well with mainstream superhero comics. Plastic Man is such a wonderful classic character. He deserves better than a story focusing on tearing down his character.

Justice Society of America #11 climbed from the number 151 spot to the number 78 spot. Justice Society of America #12 fell from the number 78 spot to the number 154 spot. With this issue, this limited series concludes. This limited series was a sales disappointment. I love the JSA, but DC Comics has no clue what to do with this franchise.

Green Arrow #16 ticked up from the number 129 spot to the number 122 spot. This is the normal place in the rankings for this title.

The Flash #13 dropped from the number 138 spot to the number 144 spot. This title seems stuck in the Dead Titles Walking category. This current direction of the Flash franchise is an obvious sales failure. Changes need to be made to resuscitate this once-proud franchise.

Let’s wrap up with the ladies of the Justice League franchise.

Wonder Woman #13 ticked up from the number 25 spot to the number 23 spot. This title continues to be a dependable Top 25 title. I cannot get into this title, but the numbers indicate that plenty of readers are enjoying Tom King’s story.

Zatanna Bring Down the House #4 climbed from the number 65 spot to the number 43 spot. That is an impressive feat for a five-issue mini-series to climb up in the rankings with its fourth issue! Wow. This mini-series has been a miss with me, but it is obvious a good amount of readers have enjoyed this title.

Trinity Special: World’s Finest #1 had an embarrassing debut failing to even make the Top 200 and going unranked. I am sure DC Comics and Tom King want to make Trinity a thing. I do not think that is going to happen, either. To be fair, this issue was a compilation of the Trinity backup stories from King’s Wonder Woman comic. So, this was not the debut of brand-new content.

Mantle Swap Comics

56 Deadpool #7 (Marvel Comics)

61 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #24 (Marvel Comics)

96 Phases of the Moon Knight #2 (Marvel Comics)

139 Ghost Rider: Robbie Reyes Special #1 (Marvel Comics)

186 Phases of the Moon Knight #1 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

189 Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #3 (Marvel Comics)

There were zero mantle swap comics in the Top 50. This was the same as in August 2024 when zero mantle swap comics were in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as there were zero mantle swap comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50 in September 2023.

Numbers were down from two years ago as there was one mantle swap comic in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50 in August 2022.

Phases of the Moon Knight #2 fell from the number 71 spot to the number 96 spot. This four-issue mini-series is a lock to conclude in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Ghost Rider: Robbie Reyes Special #1 had a horrendous debut at the number 139 spot. I know that Marvel Comics editorial desperately wants Robbie Reyes to be a thing. But, it is just not going to happen. This character continues to be a sales dud.

Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #3 crashed and burned falling from the number 135 spot to the number 189 spot. This title should be unranked by the next issue. This comic is an excellent example of a bad idea for a character and a bad choice for the writer that leads to immediate sales failure.

Legacy Character Comics

52 NYX #3 (Marvel Comics)

77 Spider-Boy #11 (Marvel Comics)

81 Birds of Prey #13

110 Titans #15 (DC Comics)

118 Kid Venom #2 (Marvel Comics)

135 The Boy Wonder #5 (Of 5) (DC Comics)

144 The Flash #13 (DC Comics)

146 NYX #2 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

159 Birds of Prey #14 (DC Comics)

170 Spider-Boy Annual #1 (Infinity Watch) (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: Power Girl #13

Unranked: Trinity Special: World’s Finest #1

There were zero legacy character comics in the Top 50. This was worse than in August 2024 when there were zero legacy character comics in the Top 10, zero comics in the Top 25, and one comic in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as there were zero legacy character comics in the Top 10, one comic in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50 in September 2023.

Titans #15 plummeted from the number 69 spot to the number 110 spot. This ended two straight months of increases in the sales rankings. This is also the lowest in the rankings that we have seen Titans. This is a franchise that should be performing much better than this. If this continues then it may be time to have a creative team shakeup.

Female Lead Comics

15 Dazzler #1 (Marvel Comics)

23 Wonder Woman #13 (Absolute Power) (DC Comics)

25 Storm #1 (Marvel Comics)

43 Zatanna Bring Down the House #4 (Of 5) (DC Comics)

81 Birds of Prey #13 (DC Comics)

84 Poison Ivy #25 (DC Comics)

105 Scarlet Witch #4 (Marvel Comics)

116 Catwoman #68 (DC Comics)

138 Poison Ivy #26 (DC Comics)

159 Birds of Prey #14 (DC Comics)

161 Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #6 (Marvel Comics)

163 Jenny Sparks #2 (Of 6) (DC Comics)

178 Star Wars: Ahsoka #3 (Marvel Comics)

182 Harley Quinn #43 (DC Comics)

185 Zatanna Bring Down the House #3 (Of 5) (DC Comics) (Resolicitation)

189 Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #3 (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: Power Girl #13 (DC Comics)

Unranked: Trinity Special: World’s Finest #1 (DC Comics)

Unranked: Primer: Clashing Colors #3 (DC Comics)

There were zero female lead comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50. This was flat compared to August 2024 when there were zero female lead comics in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and four comics in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as there was one female lead comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and six comics in the Top 50 in September 2023.

Numbers were up from two years ago as there was one female lead comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50 in September 2022.

Marvel placed two female lead comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month numbers were up as Marvel Comics had zero female lead comics in the Top 25 in August 2024. Numbers were flat in the Top 100 from two years ago as there were four female lead comics in the Top 100 in September 2022.

Marvel Comics and DC Comics fought to an uninspired 4-4 draw. Neither publisher was particularly impressive in this category. Marvel Comics benefited from a couple of debut issues this month. History tells us both titles will rapidly drop in the rankings next month.

Jenny Sparks #2 crashed and burned falling from the number 74 spot to the number 163 spot. Oof. Jenny Sparks is already a Dead Title Walking with just the second issue. At this rate, this six-issue mini-series will struggle to conclude ranked in the Top 200. Readers did not pick up what Tom King was putting down with the debut issue of this mini-series.

Primer: Clashing Colors #3 was unranked for the third straight month. This is no surprise as every mini-series of Primer has been unranked for its entirety.

Minority Lead Comics

Marvel Comics crushed DC Comics 5-0. Marvel Comics continues to pitch a shutout in this category, as DC Comics seems utterly clueless about what to do. Marvel Comics is not setting the world on fire with this category, but when their competition is this non-existent it makes them look pretty good.

Dead Titles Walking

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, titles outside of the Top 100 are usually selling under the 18,000 unit sales mark. These are the Marvel Comics and DC Comics titles that are dead titles walking.

The Tini Howard Award For The Writer With The Most Dead Titles Walking

Therefore, the Tini Howard Award for September 2024 goes to…

Two writers had two issues in the Dead Titles Walking category from the same title.

Garth Ennis had two issues with Get Fury #5 at the number 123 spot and Get Fury #6 which was unranked.

Chris Claremont Wolverine: Deep Cut #3 at the number 134 spot and Wolverine: Deep Cut #4 which was unranked.

Seven writers had two issues from different titles in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Joshua Williamson had two issues with Batman and Robin #13 at the number 103 spot and Green Arrow #16 at the number 122 spot.

Alex Segura had two issues with Spider-Society #2 at the number 104 spot and Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku #1 Insurgency at the number 149 spot.

Tom Taylor had two issues with Dark Knights of Steel Allwinter #3 at the number 107 spot and Titans #15 at the number 110 spot.

Tini Howard had two issues with Catwoman #68 at the number 116 spot and Harley Quinn #43 at the number 182 spot.

Justina Ireland had two issues with Venomverse Reborn #4 at the number 136 spot and Deathlok 50th Anniversary Special #1 at the number 172 spot.

Simon Spurrier had two issues with The Flash #13 at the number 144 spot and John Constantine, Hellblazer Dead in America #9 at the number 151 spot.

Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly had two issues with Venom War: Spider-Man #3 at the number 177 spot and Outsiders #11 which was unranked.

Three writers had three issues from different titles in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Rodney Barnes had three issues from different titles with Star Wars: Inquisitors #3 at the number 147 spot, Star Wars: Ahsoka #3 at the number 178 spot, and Star Wars: Inquisitors #4 which was unranked.

Steve Foxe had three issues from different titles in Spider-Boy Annual #1 at the number 170 spot, Chasm: Curse of Kaine #2 at the number 198 spot, and Spider-Man: Homeroom Heroes #1 which was unranked.

Erica Schultz had three issues from different titles with Venom War: Venomous #2 at the number 133 spot, Blood Hunters #2 at the number 168 spot, and Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #3 at the number 189 spot.

Tom King had five issues from different titles with Batman Day 2024 – Batman Elmer Fudd Special #1 at the number 113 spot, Jenny Sparks #2 at the number 163 spot, Penguin #12 at the number 171 spot, Batman / Elmer Fudd Batman Day Noir Special Edition #1 which was unranked, and Trinity Special: World’s Finest #1 which was unranked.

Tom King remains an anomaly among supposed “Big Name” comic book writers in that King never gets consistent Top 15 sales numbers unless he is paired up with a popular character like Batman. At any rate, King does not win the Tini Howard Award despite technically having one more issue in the Dead Title Walking category than the winner for this month.

The reason is that King’s five issues in this category are a bit deceptive. Batman Day 2024 – Batman Elmer Fudd Special #1 is the same comic with one in color and one in black and white. Further, Trinity Special: Worlds Finest #1 is not a new comic book. This issue collects and reprints all the Trinity backup stories from King’s Wonder Woman comic book. So, I see King as having three new issues in the Dead Titles Walking category for this month.

This means the winner is the writer who had four issues from different titles in the Dead Titles Walking category. Even more mind-bending is the fact that all four issues went unranked!

Josie Campbell had four issues from different titles with Shazam! #15 which was unranked, Shazam! #16 which was unranked, My Adventures with Superman #4 which was unranked, and My Adventures with Superman #5 which was unranked.

This is a first here at The Revolution. We have never seen a writer roll out multiple issues in the Dead Walking Titles category and have every single one of them unranked. That is rather breathtaking. Further, remember that Shazam! was a Top 50 to Top 75 title during Mark Waid’s run before Campbell took over. I have never seen a comic book driven into the ground at such a spectacular speed. Honestly, this is so unprecedented that we may have to change the name of this Award!

Therefore, the Tini Howard Award for September 2024 goes to…Josie Campbell!

All right, that is it for September 2024 Will Marvel Comics continue its domination of the Top 200 in October 2024? We will find out. Until then, everyone stay safe and be good!
