Top Takeaways From DC Comics February 2025 Solicitations

DC Comics February 2025 solicitations are here! With DC Comics going into the new year with DC All In being a direction they are well invested in. That is seen in the second month of the year as majority of the titles are keeping the train rolling with storylines started at the end of 2024. With that in mind let’s look at the biggest takeaways from DC Comics February 2025 comic book solicitations.

CHIP ZDARSKY ENDS CREATIVE RUN ON BATMAN

Chip Zdarsky’s creative run on Batman comes to an end in February. The final issue being Batman #157, with artists Jorge Jimenez and Tony Daniel working with Zdarsky on his conclusion. Zdarsky did not have an easy task as he was following creative runs by Tom King, James Tynion, and Joshua Williamson. Those are three of the biggest names DC Comics has had to work for them in the modern era. To Zdarsky’s credit he showed throughout his close to three year run that he was more than up to the task

What made Zdarsky’s Batman run impressive was how he paid respect to the creators that came before him to give a modern take on the franchise. Recent events like City of Bane and Joker War were events that changed the foundation of not just the Batman character but his entire world. That was reflected throughout this run where it did feel like Batman and Gotham City were evolving together. That change wasn’t always a good thing as we saw Bruce Wayne’s relationships tested along with his mental fortitude.

With that in mind, it should be interesting to see what kind of state Zdarsky will leave Batman and Gotham City for his successors to pick up from. Given that Gotham City is currently being controlled by Vandal Savage and a returning Court of Owls there is no telling what shape the city will be left. There are so many different players involved in this story that could create even more questions for future creative teams to answer.

A big one will be what is going to happen with Batman’s villains. We see with Edward Nygma having created his own company rivaling Wayne Enterprise that Gotham City will continue to evolve and the villains will play a part of. Afterall, Riddler is just one character who Batman Zur-En-Arrh put through a big alteration through. All that is to say there are a lot of intriguing things that can happen with how Zdarsky will choose to end his run on Batman.

AQUAMAN DEALS WITH FALL OF ATLANTIS

Aquaman is going to be having a happy start in 2025. That’s the vibe that is given as the solicitation for Aquaman #2 spoils the big development in the debut of this new series. That development is that Atlantis is no more. Or at the very least Atlantis is no longer located on Earth. There are hints given in Aquaman #2 solicitation that what happened to Atlantis is related to the bigger plot going on around Darkseid. Possibly it could be that Atlantis has been relocated to Apokolips.

The Aquaman franchise going through a cosmic or mystical direction would not be to surprising given that Jeremy Adams is the writer. Adams has been having a very successful run on Green Lantern, which is being expanded on. Tying the franchise into the greater developments of the DC and Absolute Universe would give this series a greater sense of importance.

To that end, Aquaman is finally getting a power upgrade as he will have new water-morphing powers. Magic has never been part of Aquaman’s bag of tricks. That has largely been saved for Mera and Tempest. With Atlantis no longer around Aquaman gaining mystical powers could be tied to his former home disappearance. It could also be a natural response by the universe as Aquaman is in need of this power to counter the bigger plot surrounding Atlantis disappearance.

This development also puts even more questions about the cast we could see in Aquaman. There are zero hints about Mera, Tempest, Aqualad, or any other members of the Aquaman family in the solicitation. Though we know from the Titans’ first DC All In issue that Tempest left the team in order to help with what was going on in Atlantis.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS RETURN

Green Lantern is a franchise that has proven in the past that it can carry two titles under its umbrella. That hasn’t been easy in recent years as the franchise has been in flux with one major change after another that’s been specific to Green Lantern. The voice for the franchise has been tough to nail down as while Hal Jordan has definitively been the main Green Lantern its been tough to find who are the other leads. Even John Stewart, the closest to matching Hal’s popularity, has had a tough time having a creator find the right direction for him.

Now finally it looks like the second series is going back to the old try and true team series Green Lantern Corps. This is a fantastic choice. For great of characters Hal, John, Kyle Rayner, Jessica Cruz, Guy Gardner, Jo Mullein, and others are what makes he franchise special is that there are so many leads all working under the same banner. There’s a wide mix of character between the Earth and other Green Lantern Corps members that it would be a waste to the franchise only focus on two lead characters.

Pairing Jeremy Adams and Morgan Hampton as co-writers is a good choice. Adams has proven himself with his work on the main Green Lantern series that he understands the grand scope the franchise should have. Adams’ Green Lanter has also brought greater attention to how important the Green Lantern Corp is to the DC Universe. This in turn will be a good way to give Hampton, a Milestone Initiative alum who had a solid run on Cyborg, more experience and build their name with DC Comics fans.

ZATANNA ZATARA GETS NEW SERIES

Zatanna: Bring Down The House is one of the best titles DC Comics released in 2024. The series did so much well that made it stand out. The biggest thing it did was remind readers why Zatanna is always a character that is on the verge of breaking out. She has long been a character who could become the next big thing, something her fans know. Now finally in 2025 Zatanna is getting that chance with another mini-series from Jamal Campbell.

Now on first reaction Zatanna getting another mini-series may be disappointing for those hoping she gets an ongoing series. But like Bring Down The House, this Zatanna mini-series should be a chance to show she can sustain fan engagement with solid sales numbers. If fans turn out in force than it wouldn’t be surprising if this Zatanna comic book goes from mini-series to ongoing, similar to Poison Ivy a few years back.

There is all the potential in the world for Zatanna to carry an ongoing. Especially since it does not look like DC Comics is returning to the Justice League Dark concept this is a chance to explore the magic world more. The Justice League Dark title showed the magic realm is one with massive threats on the level of the cosmic side. Zatanna having to combat that in her own solo series can bring with it a lot of intrigue.

GOTHAM CITY MOVING CLOSER TO NEO GOTHAM DIRECTION

Something that has been noticeable over the years in the Batman franchise is how Gotham City is on the brink of moving into the Neo Gotham direction. That has ben apparent with how much of an emphasis we have seen Wayne Enterprise be challenged as the city records from things like City of Bane and Joker War. Those and other events have burnt down what Gotham City was for so long that it’s forced change in Gotham City.

These changes can be an even greater theme throughout 2025 for the franchise. We get hints of that in the solicitations for Batman and Robin, Detective Comics, Nightwing, The Question, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Batgirl. Each of these titles hint at big changes from decisions made by their respective lead characters. Those decisions are reflective of how Gotham City itself is changing around the Batman Family, all of who are moving forward in different ways.

Nightwing #123’s solicitations in particular stands out with a direct tie to the Splicers concept from Batman Beyond. A Splicers-like group known as Flyboiz are going to be showing up to light the fire of a gang war in Bludhaven. The Man-Bat storyline in Batman and Robin this past year also did something similar. With how closely connected Bludhaven and Gotham City are it wouldn’t be surprising if the Splicer concept is utilized in other Batman titles in 2025.
