Weekly Awards For The Comic Books From August 13, 2008

The Followers of The Revolution voted for Batman #679 to win The Che for the best comic book of the week. And it was not even remotely close as Batman #679 absolutely crushed the competition this week. Action Comics #868 came in a very distant second in this poll. The results for best read of the week were as follows:

BATMAN #679: 41% (32 votes)
ACTION COMICS #868: 16% (13 votes)
SECRET INVASION #5: 11% (9 votes)
FANTASTIC FOUR #559: 9% (7 votes)
FINAL CRISIS REVELATIONS #1: 6% (5 votes)
GREEN LANTERN CORPS #27: 6% (5 votes)
ASTONISHING X-MEN #26: : 3% (3 votes)
BOOSTER GOLD #11: 2% (2 votes)
TRINITY #11: 1% (1 vote)
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #567: 0 votes

The Followers of The Revolution voted for Secret Invasion #5 to win the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst comic book of the week. This poll was much closer as Secret Invasion #5 had to fight off a strong push from Trinity #11. The results for the worst read of the week are as follows:

SECRET INVASION #5: 28% (19 votes)
TRINITY #11: 22% (15 votes)

All right, let’s go ahead and dish out The Revolution’s weekly awards.
The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:

Action Comics #868
Batman #679
Fantastic Four #559

The Winner: Batman #679

This was a fairly strong week from top to bottom. Fantastic Four #559 was another entertaining issue. Millar keeps this title an interesting and lively read.

Action Comics #868 was another strong issue by Johns. I love how Johns is tweaking Brainiac’s character in order to properly mesh him into New Earth’s continuity. Johns has taken every version of Brainiac from the Silver Age up to the present and repackaged them into one cohesive character.

However, I had to agree with the readers of The Revolution and award The Che to Batman #679. The Batman RIP story arc continues to be a “love it or hate it” event. Obviously, I am on the “love it” side. Morrison keeps delivering an incredibly complex story that has so much substance and depth that the reader can read the issue several times and come away with something new each time. And as a continuity buff, I am enjoying how Morrison is playing with Batman’s old Silver Age stories.

And now the nominees for the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst read of the week:

Amazing Spider-Man #567
Secret Invasion #5

The Winner: Secret Invasion #5

Amazing Spider-Man #567 was just plain hideous. I do not know where to even start with this issue. Little Miss Kraven the Huntress is just a horrible villain. This is a perfect example of how derivative characters often completely and totally suck compared to the original character.

The writing on Amazing Spider-Man continues to be massively disappointing. The stories are thin and the dialogue is cheesy at best. Amazing Spider-Man continues to embody all of the negative elements of comic book storytelling from the 1970’s.

In the end, I had to agree with the Followers of The Revolution and award the Sequential Methadone Award to Secret Invasion #5. Yeah, technically, Amazing Spider-Man #567 might have actually been worse. But, the fact is that nobody expects Amazing Spider-Man to be a quality read. Not even Marvel expects that.

However, I do expect Marvel’s “big” event to be one of their strongest reads on the market. And Secret Invasion is most definitely not Marvel’s strongest read on the market. Not even by a long shot.

I already broke down Secret Invasion #5 and all of its weaknesses in great detail in my review. Suffice it to say, that Bendis turned in an issue that had a predictable and shallow story and dialogue that was cheesy and overdramatic at times.

So congrats to Batman #679 for winning The Che for the week and “congrats” to Secret Invasion #5 for winning the Sequential Methadone Award for the week.
