Weekly Awards For The Comic Books From June 11, 2008

I opened up the polls in order to gauge the opinions of the followers of The Revolution about which title you all viewed as worthy of The Che and the Sequential Methadone Award. I was interested to see how vastly my opinions differed from those who frequent The Revolution. The results were interesting.

The Followers of The Revolution voted for Booster Gold #10 to receive The Che this week. The results for best read of the week were as follows:

Booster Gold #10: 31% (23 votes)
Action Comics #866: 20% (15 votes)
Titans #3: 12% (9 votes)
Captain Britain and MI #2: 9% (7 votes)
Amazing Spider-Man #562: 8% (6 votes)
Trinity #2: 6% (5 votes)
Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #3: 4% (3 votes)
Moon Knight #19: 2% (2 votes)
Newuniversal: Shockfront #2: 2% (2 votes)
Eternals #1: 2% (2 votes)

The followers of The Revolution then voted for Titans #3 to win the Sequential Methadone Award of the week. It was definitely a close battle between Titans #3 and Amazing Spider-Man #562 that came down to just one single vote.

Titans #3: 35% (21 votes)
Amazing Spider-Man #562: 33% (20 votes)
Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #3: 6% (4 votes)
Eternals #1: 6% (4 votes)
Booster Gold #10: 3% (2 votes)
Captain Britain and MI #2: 3% (2 votes)
Trinity #2: 3% (2 votes)
Action Comics #866: 1% (1 vote)
Newuniversal: Shockfront #2: 1% (1 vote)
Salvation Run #7: 1% (1 vote)
Green Lantern Corps #25: 3% (2 votes)

All right, let’s go ahead and dish out The Revolution’s weekly awards.
The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:

Action Comics #866
Booster Gold #10
Newuniversal: Shockfront #2

The Winner: Newuniversal: Shockfront #2

This was actually a fairly weak selection of comic books. This was definitely a much less impressive set of comic books compared to what we have been treated to over the past couple of weeks. I have already reviewed Action Comics #866 and Booster Gold #10 and I enjoyed both issues. However, both of them had just enough defects to prevent them from winning the Che this week.

I had to give The Che for the best read of the week to Newuniversal: Shockfront #2. I have already praised this issue in my review. Ellis is treating the reader to a wonderfully written title. Seriously, this title is a cut above of what you usually get from either Marvel or DC.

And now the nominees for the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst read of the week:

Amazing Spider-Man #562
Titans #3

The Winner: Titans #3

Both titles were pretty bad reads. Amazing Spider-Man #562 was nothing but pure filler as I had to suffer through a dull story centered on a no-name villain named the Bookie. This issue also continues the trend of Amazing Spider-Man reading like a Marvel Adventures comic book. This title has definitely sunk down to the level of an all-ages title.

However, I had to give the Sequential Methadone Award to Titans #3. The fact remains that if you dig all-ages titles, then you will probably enjoy Amazing Spider-Man. On the other hand, Titans just reads like a really crappy episode of Real World.

And now the nominees for the Most Surprising Read of the week:
None

Yeah, I have to say that I was surprised that not a single issue I read this week surprised me. The comic books that I expected to be bad were bad. The comic books that I expected to be good were indeed good. And the comic books that I figured would be average were in fact average.

So congrats to Newuniversal: Shockfront #2 for winning the Che for the week and congrats to Titans #3 for winning the Sequential Methadone Award for the week.

  1. I totally missed the voting because I read The Revolution via my Google Reader instead of the site. Not going to make the same mistake this week! Awesome idea!

  2. I liked the first issue of Newuniversal a lot more than #2. I won’t be going back to that series after #2, in fact.
