CREATIVE TEAM

Absolute Wonder Woman #1 is a kick ass start to what is already a must-read comic book. There are so many incredible moments in this debut issue that just consistently remind you that you’re reading something that is special. This is easily the best Wonder Woman has been in a long time. Comic Book Reviews: Detective Comics #1090DETECTIVE COMICS #1090

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Tom Taylor

Artist: Mikel Janin

Letterer: Wes Abbott

Tom Taylor and Mikel Janin waste no time beginning their time on Detective Comics by providing a taste plate of what kind of storytelling you can expect from their creative run. The biggest takeaway will certainly be how this first story arc is exploring the Wayne Family history. What makes the story that Taylor and Janin present for the Wayne Family history is the present-day detective angle that is taken. A focus on Batman’s World’s Greatest Detective aspect is a simple but extremely effective way to separate this series from the other Batman titles. Creating such a big mystery is enough of a hook to come back to read what will be revealed after everything that was set-up in Detective Comics #1090.

Overall Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10

Comic Book Reviews: Green Arrow #17GREEN ARROW #17

CREATIVE TEAM

Writers: Joshua Williamson and Chris Condon

Artists: Amancay Nahuelpan and Montos

Colorists: Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Adriano Lucas

Letterers: Troy Peteri and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

With Green Arrow #17 Joshua Williamson is able to begin to tie-up some loose ends he’ll wrap up in the upcoming annual and hand the keys over to Chris Condon and Montos to takeover. Through this transition issue we are able to delve further into the aftermath of Absolute Power and what the results of that event mean for Oliver Queen’s future. While that does not lead to the cleanest of send offs to a year plus creative run the new foundation that is left behind leaves a lot of potential for Green Arrow’s DC All In direction. Overall Rating: 6.5 Night Girls out of 10

Comic Book Reviews: Nightwing #119NIGHTWING #119

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Dan Watters

Artist: Dexter Soy

Colorist: Veronica Gandini

Letterer: Wes Abbott

Dan Watters and Dexter Soy don’t try to reinvent the wheel with Nightwing after the successful run by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo. Instead, they focus on keeping up the momentum their predecessors to push Nightwing forward. This created a natural flow to the storytelling as Dick Grayson gets thrown a few curveballs with the politics driving Bludhaven appear to be taking center stage for the immediate future of this series. The injection of politics balanced out the more traditional superhero aspects of Nightwing #119. Though the obvious twists at the end of this issue does put into question what the actual payoff will be after the big villain reveal takes away any sort of level of suspense for what we could expect.

Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10

Comic Book Reviews: Scarlet Witch #1SCARLET WITCH #5

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Steve Orlando

Artist: Lorenzo Tammetta

Colorist: Frank William

Letterer: Travis Lanham

Scarlet Witch going solo has been a real opportunity to show how her chemistry with a wide variety of Marvel characters can drive a story. Scarlet Witch #5 is another example of that with this one-shot style story guest starring Daredevil. Wanda Maximoff and Matt Murdock balance each other well to give this spooky mystery story a fun energy. That is also thanks to the great artwork by Lorenzo Tammetta and Frank William as they nicely balance out the normal vibrant art style with a good use of shadows given the setting of the story. Add in the intriguing ending with a ghost from Wanda’s past appearing makes Scarlet Witch #5 yet another reminder of this being one of Marvel’s best titles.

Overall Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10

Comic Book Reviews: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #3

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jason Aaron

Artist: Cliff Chang

Letterer: Shawn Lee

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3 hands over the spotlight to where Leonardo is at after the Splinter Clan went their separate ways. As he has done in the previous two issues, Jason Aaron showed he understands the individuality of each Turtle as he focuses on Leonardo being a spiritual character. How that leads to showcasing what makes Leonardo such a badass was awesome to see. When things go down between Leonardo and the Foot, Cliff Chang frames the scenes to make you know it is the Foot ninja that are in trouble not Leo. Culminating Leo’s story by bringing together with what happened in Raphael and Michelangelo ends things reminded all involved Leo is the family’s leader.

Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10

Comic Book Reviews: Void Rivals #13VOID RIVALS #13

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Robert Kirkman

Artist: Lorenzo De Felici

Colorist: Patricio Delpeche

Letterer: Rus Wooton

Void Rivals #13 is an intricately crafted start to the series newest arc that integrates even more elements from around the Energon Universe. Robert Kirkman makes every word spoken resonate to create a strong foundation for this new story arc. Add in the excellent artwork from Lorenzo De Felici and Void Rivals #13 is yet another home run issue for this series. Click here to read full review.

Overall Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10

Comic Book Reviews: X-Men #6X-MEN #6

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jed MacKay

Artist: Netho Diaz

Inker: Sean Parsons

Colorist: Marte Gracia and Fer Sifuentes-Sujo

Letterer: Clayton Cowles

X-Men #6 is a transition issue between storylines. That does not mean there weren’t any sort of developments. There are a lot of good moments, particularly between Magik and Temper as well as a cool training session between Cyclops and Psylocke. Given all that’s happened this is a necessary issue as the cast chemistry with recent additions are needed for the long-term health of this direction. The hook ending adds to how now we are transitioning into a new story arc that delves into the X-Men’s current status quo.

Overall Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10

Comic Book Reviews: Zatanna: Bring Down The House #5ZATANNA: BRING DOWN THE HOUSE #5

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Mariko Tamaki

Artist: Javier Rodriguez

Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

Mariko Tamaki and Javier Rodriguez do such a wonderful job at making Zatanna: Bring Down The House #5 act as the culmination of a massive journey. There is nothing held back with how wild and crazy this final magical showdown Zatanna gets into. It all really put over how unlimited the potential there is in the DC Universe’s magical realm as anything can happen. A big credit for that is Javier Rodriguez doing such an amazing job bringing the story Mariko Tamaki writes to life in such an imaginative way. It all wraps up a comic book that will definitely be a strong contender for the best comic book released this year.
