CREATIVE TEAM

Co-Plot: Mark Waid and Chris Samnee

Writer: Mark Waid

Artist: Chris Samnee

Colorist: Giovana Niro

Letterer: Clayton Cowles and Chris Samnee

With how often the original Dynamic Duo’s history is revisited it is tough to tell fresh stories of that time period. While they don’t necessarily find a new angle, it is a credit to Mark Waid and Chris Samnee chemistry as a creative team that they keep things simple by showing how Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson interactions differ between their civilian and Dynamic Duo lives. Adding in how Gotham City residents are reacting to the playboy billionaire adopting a kid helps to build out the world during this time-period. Samnee’s artwork does so much to help with the world building and creating a sense of danger around the Batman villains being utilized.

Comic Book Reviews: Daredevil #15DAREDEVIL #15

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Saladin Ahmed

Artist: Luigi Zagaria

Colorist: Jesus Aburtov

Letterer: Clayton Cowles

Daredevil #15 provides the reality check Matt Murdock needed to move this story forward. As soon as Elektra talks with Matt, while both are dressed as Daredevil, about how he has a narrow, and possibly wrong, perspective on the Seven Deadly Sins attack it clicks this is what has been missing. We’ve been following Matt’s journey throughout this story that both he and the reader needed to get another perspective examining why this is happening. Going from that to also talking to his pastor as Daredevil has more weight because of what Elektra says. But as soon as it looks like Matt is finding his mojo again the final few pages bring even harsher developments that threaten this progress. It all comes together for what is the best Daredevil issue of Saladin Ahmed’s run.

Comic Book Reviews: Immortal Thor #17IMMORTAL THOR #17

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Al Ewing

Artist: Jan Bazaldua

Colorist: Matt Hollingsworth

Letterer: Joe Sabino

Immortal Thor #17 juggles various storylines in a way that compliments each other. In the process multiple characters are put over beyond Thor, adding more interest in where all these paths are leading us to. The final page brings back a character that we never thought we see again. Their presence in the story creates a greater sense of unknown in the journey Al Ewing and Jan Bazaldua are taking us on. Comic Book Reviews: Phoenix #5PHOENIX #5

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Stephanie Phillips

Artist: Alessadro Miracolo and Marc Renna

Colorist: David Curiel

Letterer: Cory Petit

Stephanie Phillips has really nailed the pacing for the latest Jean Grey series. Phoenix #5 is an excellent example of that as the scale of the story is appropriately larger than life. The story in this issue further pushes the idea of how different things are this time around for Jean as Phoenix. She has reached a level that goes beyond the X-Men bubble. How that leads into developments that bring in Thanos to the story builds hype around finding out what will happen next. Add in the strong artwork by Alessadro Miracolo and Marc Renna, and we have a comic book in Phoenix that makes a strong argument for being the best X-Men title right now.

Comic Book Reviews: Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #7SPIDER-GWEN: THE GHOST-SPIDER #7

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Stephanie Phillips

Artist: Von Randal

Colorist: Matt Milla

Letterer: Ariana Maher

As soon the Black Tarantula talks to Spider-Gwen about her not belonging on Earth-616 there is a Groundhogs Day effect that is felt. This version of Gwen Stacy has been stuck in the same cycle of trying to make a place for herself on Earth-616 after running away from her home universe for years now. Having that be the villain’s shtick makes it so as a Spider-Gwen fan you just zone out when he and Gwen are having their back and forth. Us being seven issues into this storyline direction just creates a sense of boredom. The quicker that Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider moves on from this story the better it will be. If not then this title may be a short lifespan.

Overall Rating: 3.5 Night Girls out of 10

Comic Book Reviews: Storm #2STORM #2

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Murewa Ayodele

Artist: Lucas Werneck

Colorist: Alex Guimaraes

Letterer: Travis Lanham

Throughout this second issue the mysterious sickness that hit Storm at the end of the debut hangs over everything that goes on here. It created concern that is always on your mind as a reader as we see Storm continuing operating as a superhero. This is where Lucas Werneck artwork reaches another level. The attention to detail of how Storm acts alone and when interacting with others gave weight to the story Murewa Ayodele writing is telling. Storm actively looking for an answer to what is going on with her drives the story in an intriguing direction with a cool addition to the cast of this series at the end of the issue.

Comic Book Reviews: Titans #17TITANS #17

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: John Layman

Artist: Pete Wood

Letterer: Wes Abbott

Titans #17 is an early statement comic book for John Layman and Pete Wood as the new creative team for this series. They do an effective job giving Clock King a two-issue story to put him over as a threat while showing the strength of a Donna Troy-led Titans team. This in turn creates a good transition point for the Titans after all the changes that have gone on in the DC Universe post-Absolute Power. It all leads to a final page that will certainly have Titans’ fans intrigued by what will happen next in this series.

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jonathan Hickman

Artist: David Messina

Colorist: Matthew Wilson

Ultimate Spider-Man #11 continues the excellence this series has been known for from the moment it started. Peter Parker operating as a solo hero created a lot of intriguing developments both for his personal and Spider-Man lives. How that trickled down to what goes on with the Sinister Six showcased the multiple layers this series has. It all leads to creating the feeling of wanting to read the next chapter of this story as soon as possible. Click here to read full review.
