Absolute Wonder Woman #2 is a strong example of how to pull off character and world building. From establishing Wonder Woman’s powers to the history between Diana Prince and Steve Trevor to how the military factors into the story, there is a strong balance in the storytelling. Some of the developments create questions around how fate factors into the Absolute Universe with there being unavoidable events no matter how history is altered. This all helps to build out a world around Wonder Woman that you just want to learn more about.

Comic Book Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #62AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #62

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Joe Kelly

Artist: Ed McGuinness

Inker: Cliff Rathburn, Mark Farmer, and Wade Von Grawdger

Colorist: Marcio Menyz and Erick Arciniega

Letterer: Joe Caragna

Maybe the messy set-up was necessary for “The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man” to get rolling. That is the feeling had after reading Amazing Spider-Man #62 that has a much better pacing. Bringing in Doctor Strange and Black Cat into the fold was a smart choice as they helped set the tone of this story. They put into perspective what and how Peter Parker is dealing with the threat of the Scions. That momentum is carried into other interactions Peter has throughout this issue. There are still some holes in the story that make it feel like it’s missing something but at least this was a good step forward for the storyline.

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Tom Taylor

Artist: Mikel Janin

Letterer: Wes Abbott

Father time always wins. It is a natural thing that we all learn, and Bruce Wayne can no longer ignore as seen with Detective Comics #1091. It is a story that Tom King and Mikel Janin prove to have a deft hand at navigating in a way that challenges how Bruce is moving forward. Exploring this personal story for Bruce makes what is going on with the mysterious new villain that Batman is investigating a different sense of danger.

Comic Book Reviews: Nightwing #120NIGHTWING #120

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Dan Watters

Artist: Dexter Soy

Colorist: Veronica Gandini

Letterer: Wes Abbott

Bludhaven is a city with a massive hole left to fill in the wake of Nightwing defeating Blockbuster and Heartless. How that has made room for a greater, more complicated threat that creates a challenge for Nightwing on multiple fronts. That leads to Nightwing #120 being a comic book that is constantly on the move with non-stop developments. Where those developments lead to create a sense of wonder in the ramifications of this story when all is said and done with this story.

Comic Book Reviews: Ultimate Black Panther #10ULTIMATE BLACK PANTHER #10

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Bryan Hill

Artist: Carlos Nieto

Colorist: David Curiel

Letterer: Cory Petit

Ultimate Black Panther #10 puts a pause on the Moon Knight story to spotlight Inan, the Ultimate Sorcerer Supreme. Bryan Hill and Carlos Nieto treat this as an important side adventure to develop a key character in the Ultimate Universe. Though that does in turn lead to the story staying in place and little to no character progression for most of the cast of this series. Given that we are ten chapters into this storyline this causes the introduction of the Ultimate Sorcerer Supreme to come across as filler content.

Overall Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10

Comic Book Reviews: Uncanny X-Men #6UNCANNY X-MEN #6

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Gail Simone

Artist: Javier Garron

Colorist: Mattew Wilson

Letterer: Clayton Cowles

Uncanny X-Men #6 is a strong prelude chapter to the upcoming “Raid On Graymalkin” storyline. The stakes at hand are made clear with Doctor Corina Ellis coming into her own as a long term X-Men villain. That is showcased with what she has her group do to the X-Men in this issue. Add in the various dynamics between the new and classic X-Men, and we get another example of how Gail Simone and Javier Garron continue to establish Uncanny X-Men as the best current series in the franchise.
