Comic Book Reviews: Birds of Prey #19BIRDS OF PREY #19

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Kelly Thompson

Artist: Juann Cabal

Colorist: Adriano Lucas

Letterer: Clayton Cowles

Kelly Thompson is at her best when writing short story arcs or one-shot style stories. Birds of Prey #19 exemplifies this as there is no wasted time in this conclusion to the two-part “Divide & Conquer” arc. Everything that is done here continues to build on the development Black Canary, Sin, Oracle, Big Barda, and Batgirl have had during this series. Each one has a clear character arc that compliments the greater team. This leads to developments with the League of Assassins that leave us wondering what will happen next, specifically with Sin.

Comic Book Reviews: Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #1MOTHRA: QUEEN OF THE MONSTERS #1

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Sophie Campbell

Artists: Matt Frank and Sophie Campbell

Letterer: Nathan Widick

As soon as you open Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #1 you will immediately know that Sophie Campbell and Matt Frank are crafting a special kaiju comic book. There is so much depth to the world building that branches off the premise of the fall of Mothra. This is easily one of the best balance storytelling between the human and kaiju characters. The artwork takes that storytelling to another level with how epic everything that happens looks. Click here to read full review.

Comic Book Reviews: Scarlet Witch #10SCARLET WITCH #10

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Steve Orlando

Artist: Jacopo Camagni and Russell Dauterman

Inker: Elisabetta D’Amico

Colorist: Frank William

Letterer: Ariana Maher

Scarlet Witch #10 ends with Wanda Maximoff learning one of the most important lessons she’s had in her life. That is what it means to be a teacher and mentor. That lesson being taught through how she had to help Amaranth control the wild magic she was using made this cosmically dangerous situation feel personal. While this provides growth for both Wanda and Amaranth it also highlighted how neither was ready to have a mentor-protégé relationship. That leads this volume of Scarlet Witch ending in a way that makes you wonder what Steve Orlando and Marvel have planned for her. Which we will learn in the upcoming The Vision & The Scarlet Witch series.

Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10

Comic Book Reviews: TMNT: Nightwatcher 6TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: NIGHTWATCHER #6

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Juni Ba

Artist: Fero Pe

Colorist: Luis Antonio Delgado

Letterer: Nathan Widick

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Nightwatcher #6 does an excellent job at being the big penultimate chapter the story needed it to be. The internal and external battle Jennika has as she weighs her options as the conflict with the Nightwatcher armor takes precedence. The conflict with the Nightwatcher armor adds to everything as Jennika struggles with the always complicated superhero conundrum of balancing her personal and hero life. The way Lao Ban takes this to verbally attack her makes you really feel how heavy of a weight Jennika is carrying. That all builds to a strong final few pages that Fero Pe beautifully nails giving a cinematic look to build momentum for the final issue.

Comic Book Reviews: The Ultimates #10THE ULTIMATES #10

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Deniz Camp

Artist: Juan Frigeri

Colorist: Federico Blee

Letterer: Travis Lanham

The Ultimates #10 is easily the best issue of this series thus far. That is accomplished by simply showing the Ultimates operating as a team. It is a simple adjustment from previous issues that goes a long way with everything that is done with the world building of this issue. There are so many great team moments that help elevate the importance Captain America and Human Torch backstory to the story. The revelations made are game changing and leaves you excited to see where the series goes next. Click here to read full review.
