Comic Book Reviews: Destro #3DESTRO #3

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Dan Watters

Artist: Andrea Milana

Colorist: Adriano Lucas

Letterer: Rus Wooton

Destro #3 is an action-packed comic book. Destro’s fight against the Chameleon is choreographed in a way that you are constantly guessing how it could end. All of the action has a sense of purpose that gets you even more invested in how this series developments will factor into the greater GI JOE plans in the Energon Universe. The cliffhanger creates a lot of intrigue to find out what will happen in the second half of this mini-series. Click here to read the full review.

Comic Book Reviews: Nightwing #117NIGHTWING #117

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Tom Taylor

Artist: Bruno Redondo

Inker: Caio Filipe

Colorist: Adriano Lucas

Letterer: Wes Abbott

Nightwing #117 did exactly what it needed to position Dick Grayson back to a form where he can take the fight to Heartless. Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo do a great job handling how Dick Grayson overcomes the sudden fear of heights he developed. The revelation that Dick made through this process made the confrontation with Tony Zucco had even greater impact. Through all of this, the way Taylor and Redondo utilized Bruce Wayne, Barbara Gordon, and Deadman strengthened the flow of this story. It all sets the stage for what should be an exciting conclusion to solidify the legendary status of this Nightwing creative run.

Comic Book Reviews: Phoenix #2PHOENIX #2

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Stephanie Phillips

Artist: Alessandro Miracolo

Colorist: David Curiel

Letterer: Cory Petit

Phoenix #2 for better and worse keeps up the pacing from the first issue. When this comic book is at its best the focus is on Jean Grey as the Phoenix interacting with the greater Marvel cosmic universe. Adding in Corsair into this adventure added some light-hearted bits needed to balance out the more serious approach Jean as Phoenix is taking to being a cosmic protector. The way that led to Jean confronting the Black Order and Skrulls does a good job of establishing the different types of threats available for this series. The only thing that kept Phoenix #2 back was the dedication to the future narrator telling us this story. While only used at the beginning and end of this issue they got in the way of the pacing of the story each time. Hopefully, that is something that is quickly done away with as Phoenix is showing the potential to be a breakout hit when Jean is the narrative driver.

Comic Book Reviews: Power Rangers: InfinityPOWER RANGERS: INFINITY #1

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Sam Humphries

Artist: Brandt & Stein

Colorist: Triona Farrell

Letterer: Ed Dukeshire

Power Rangers: Infinity is a one-shot that does everything to be unique. The presentation of this story is certainly a breath of fresh air in Power Rangers storytelling. Though Sam Humphries does end up swinging and missing with this story that leans more into the Super Sentai side rather than Power Rangers. A lot of it comes down to the rushed character development because Humphries has only 38 pages to tell this unique story. Many problems could’ve been solved by going with the cast being only three Power Rangers rather than the normal six. It’s too bad because this had potential if it was more refined given its one-shot nature.

Comic Book Reviews: Scarlet Witch #3SCARLET WICH #3

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Steve Orlando

Artist: Russell Dauterman and Jacopo Camagni

Colorist: Matthew Wilson and Frank William

Letterer: Ariana Maher

Scarlet Witch #3 is a visual delight. Steve Orlando shows great trust in Russell Dauterman and Jacopo Camagni creating a presentation that keeps the reader engaged on both sides of the story in this comic book. Dauterman’s artwork does a spectacular job of making you feel the wild and crazy dark magic journey Wanda Maximoff is on. While Camagni delivers good-looking superhero action. Orlando for his part does a lot of great work further developing each character involved in the story. It all comes together to get the reader in this story with our heroes battling the supernatural threats of Griever and the Queen of Nevers.

Comic Book Reviews: Titans #14TITANS #14

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Tom Taylor

Artist: Lucas Meyer

Colorist: Adriano Lucas

Letterer: Wes Abbott

Titans #14 is exactly the chapter that The Dark-Winged Queen storyline needed. Finally escalates to the big event level that we’ve been teased it would be since Beast World ended. There have been moments that have felt like filler. To Tom Taylor’s credit, he made all the content that felt like filler to have a payoff with how Nightwing and Cyborg discover the truth about Dark Raven. The Titans not wasting time and being committed to stopping their corrupted friend was well done. The addition of Spectre further elevates what Dark Raven does as she fully transforms into a God-like Dark-Winged Queen. It all leads to a hook ending that makes Titans #14 the penultimate chapter needed to build full hype for the finale of this story.

Comic Book Reviews: Ultimate Spider-Man #8ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #8

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jonathan Hickman

Artist: Marco Checchetto

Colorist: Matthew Wilson

Letterer: Cory Petit

No one is doing world-building better than Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto on Ultimate Spider-Man. This week’s issue is yet another example of how Peter Parker and Harry Osborn’s first meeting with Tony Stark goes. What Tony reveals impacts Peter and Harry differently and sets up some intriguing sub-plots for both Ultimate Spider-Man and the greater Ultimate Universe. The drama around that is well balanced out with how the Parker Family chemistry continues to steal the show and the birthday party setting does just that again. Add in how Hickman and Checchetto present the Sinister Six connection to the greater politics of the world Ultimate Spider-Man #8 is another home-run comic book.

Comic Book Reviews: Wolverine: Revenge #1WOLVERINE: REVENGE #1

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jonathan Hickman

Artist: Greg Capullo

Inker: Tim Townsend

Colorist: FCO Plascencia

Letterer: Cory Petit

Jonathan Hickman and Greg Capullo deliver an absolute must-read comic book with Wolverine: Revenge #1. They do not waste any time in setting the stakes as this alternate Marvel Universe deals with being sent to the dark ages after a major event created a global crisis. Those stakes are further elevated by what Wolverine and his allies are put through. By the end, you’re left wanting to see Wolverine live up to the revenge aspect of this series in addition to saving the world. Click here to read the full review.

Comic Book Reviews: Wonder Woman #12WONDER WOMAN #12

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Tom King

Artist: Tony S. Daniel

Colorist: Leonardo Paciarotti

Letterer: Clayton Cowles

Wonder Woman #12 may very well be the best comic book issue from Tom King’s creative run on this series. The story is a simple interrogation issue that focuses more on exploring Diana Prince and Damian Wayne’s dynamic rather than furthering the greater Absolute Power event. This choice works to the strength of the story King and Tony Daniel told. Diana and Damian share a unique dynamic that sees them open up in ways they don’t normally with others. Definitely a comic book to check out if you are a Wonder Woman or Robin fan. Click here to read the full review.
