X-Men: From The Ashes Confirms Cyclops & Phoenix Status Quo

As we are beginning the X-Men: From the Ashes we got learned more about where both Scott Summers and Jean Grey status quo. There were a lot things up in the air in the fallout of Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X. That includes what it means for their Scott and Jean’s relationship with Scott as Cyclops will continue to be leading the X-Men while Jean as Phoenix becomes a solo cosmic hero. Now their individual status quo and where their relationship stands, the X-Men: From the Ashes Infinity Comic revealed a lot about the couple.

With Tom Brevoort as the X-Men editor he is using his love for what he views as the classic Marvel elements Scott and Jean are the official couple, leaving Logan out. In fact Brevoort stated in a Substack Q&A he never thought Scott-Jean-Logan throuple was nothing more than an idea rather than a confirmed status quo during the Krakoa Era.

We see this Brevoort’s vision a reality in first story arc of the Marvel Unlimited exclusive X-Men: From the Ashes Infinity Comic with Scott Summers and Jean Grey marriage confirmed is intact. We see that with how they decide to take a much-needed vacation in the aftermath of Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X. This was also the last few days before Jean would take off for her new mission as a cosmic hero with her returned Phoenix powers.

Because of that it made this vacation extra special in Scott’s eyes. After dealing with a ghost still haunting the cabin they were in, Scott opens up about his insecurities about Jean’s Phoenix status. With Jean’s latest return without the Phoenix powers Scott admitted he saw it as a chance for them to grow old together seeing the kids and grandchildren grow up. But Scott also understood that Jean and the Phoenix are forever tied together. With that Jean is essentially an immortal God who whether dying of old age or in action would be resurrected.

To Scott’s credit this was him trying to guilt Jean into staying or revoking the Phoenix Force. Rather, knowing they’d be apart for a while he didn’t want anything left unsaid between them. Jean understood this as she confirmed their love will continue going strong even as they’re off in their separate missions. There are even references made that Scott and Jean are possibly going to try to have another kid together as both Nathan and Rachel Summers are brought up during their conversation.

PHOENIX UPGRADES JEAN GREY’S OMEGA LEVEL POWERS

Another key part of X-Men: From the Ashes’ first story arc is how it develops a major plot point for Jean Grey’s returned status as Phoenix. Specifically, that her psychic powers have grown even more that she can impact memory echoes around her to take form of a spirit, which is what happened in this X-Men: From the Ashes story. Jean specifically calls this out part of her psychic aura rather than Phoenix Force powers.

This power up from Jean continues the growth her character has had since her latest return right before the Krakoa Era started. We saw both her younger self who was brought to the present and her in the present show even stronger psychic powers than before. It was at a point where Jean fully tapped into her Omega-level mutant potential at free will. Because of that by regaining the Phoenix Force powers it is not surprising that Jean’s mutant powers have grown even more. She was able to chase Mr. Sinister’s Enigma throughout time and space in order to permanently defeat him.

With this we get a better idea of how Jean will be using her Phoenix and psychic powers to create real change in the Marvel Universe. While she will try to not just become a God she is as close as it gets. Mentioning that she basically has her own gravity that she is the center of creates a lot of interesting ways for her with how she interacts with other worlds and cosmic characters. Her work could help repair the X-Men’s image with other worlds.
